  • Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) at C-band is an ideal remote sensing system for crop monitoring owing to its short wavelength, which interacts with the upper parts of the crop canopy. This study evaluated the potential of dual polarimetric Sentinel-1 at C-band for monitoring rice phenology. Rice phenological variations occur in a short period. Hence, the short revisit time of Sentinel-1 SAR system can facilitate the tracking of short-term temporal morphological variations in rice crop growth. The sensitivity of SAR backscattering coefficients, backscattering ratio, and polarimetric decomposition parameters on rice phenological stages were investigated through a time-series analysis of 33 Sentinel-1 Single Look Complex images collected from 10th April to 25th October 2020 in Gimhae, South Korea. Based on the observed temporal variations in SAR parameters, we could identify and distinguish the phenological stages of the Gimhae rice growth cycle. The backscattering coefficient in VH polarisation and polarimetric decomposition parameters showed high sensitivity to rice growth. However, amongst SAR parameters estimated in this study, the VH backscattering coefficient realistically identifies all phenological stages, and its temporal variation patterns are preserved in both Sentinel-1A (S1A) and Sentinel-1B (S1B). Polarimetric decomposition parameters exhibited some offsets in successive acquisitions from S1A and S1B. Further studies with data collected from various incidence angles are crucial to determine the impact of different incidence angles on polarimetric decomposition parameters in rice paddy fields.

  • Mobile Mapping System needs system calibration of multi sensors. System calibration is defined as determination of spatial and rotational offsets between the sensors. Especially, EO parameters of GPS/INS require knowledge of the calibration to camera frame. The calibration parameters must be determined with the highest achievable accuracy in order to get 3D coordinate points in stereo CCD images. This study applies Boresight calibration for the calibration between GPS/INS and camera, and estimates the Performance of the calibration.

  • One of the most reliable and simplest tools for structural vibration control in civil engineering is Tuned Mass Damper, TMD. Provided that the frequency and damping parameters of these dampers are tuned appropriately, they can reduce the vibrations of the structure through their generated inertia forces, as they vibrate continuously. To achieve the optimal parameters of TMD, many different methods have been provided so far. In old approaches, some formulas have been offered based on simplifying models and their applied loadings while novel procedures need to model structures completely in order to obtain TMD parameters. In this paper, with regard to the nonlinear decision-making of fuzzy systems and their enough ability to cope with different unreliability, a method is proposed. Furthermore, by taking advantage of both old and new methods a fuzzy system is designed to be operational and reduce uncertainties related to models and applied loads. To design fuzzy system, it is required to gain data on structures and optimum parameters of TMDs corresponding to these structures. This information is obtained through modeling MDOF systems with various numbers of stories subjected to far and near field earthquakes. The design of the fuzzy systems is performed by three methods: look-up table, the data space grid-partitioning, and clustering. After that, rule weights of Mamdani fuzzy system using the look-up table are optimized through genetic algorithm and rule weights of Sugeno fuzzy system designed based on grid-partitioning methods and clustering data are optimized through ANFIS (Adaptive Neuro-Fuzzy Inference System). By comparing these methods, it is observed that the fuzzy system technique based on data clustering has an efficient function to predict the optimal parameters of TMDs. In this method, average of errors in estimating frequency and damping ratio is close to zero. Also, standard deviation of frequency errors and damping ratio errors decrease by 78% and 4.1% respectively in comparison with the look-up table method. While, this reductions compared to the grid partitioning method are 2.2% and 1.8% respectively. In this research, TMD parameters are estimated for a 15-degree of freedom structure based on designed fuzzy system and are compared to parameters obtained from the genetic algorithm and empirical relations. The progress up to 1.9% and 2% under far-field earthquakes and 0.4% and 2.2% under near-field earthquakes is obtained in decreasing respectively roof maximum displacement and its RMS ratio through fuzzy system method compared to those obtained by empirical relations.

  • In case of a single input single output (SISO) system with a nonlinear term, a signal compression method is useful to identify a system because the equivalent impulse response of linear part from the system can be extracted by the method. However even though the signal compression method is useful to estimate uncertain parameters of the system, the method cannot be directly applied to a unique system with hysteresis characteristics because it cannot estimate all of the two different dynamic properties according to its motion direction. This paper proposes a signal compression method with a pre-processor to identify a unique system with two different dynamics according to its motion direction. The pre-processor plays a role of separating expansion and retraction properties from the system with hysteresis characteristics. For evaluating performance of the proposed approach, a simulation to estimate the assumed unknown parameters for an arbitrary known model is carried out. A motion platform with several single-rod cylinders is a representative unique system with two different dynamics, because each single-rod cylinder has expansion and retraction dynamic properties according to its motion direction. The nominal constant parameters of the motion platform are experimentally identified by using the proposed method. As its application, the identified parameters are applied to a design of a sliding mode controller for the simulator.

  • Condition-based maintenance(CBM) has been used as a useful concept for optimizing maintenance plan and decreasing maintenance cost in several kinds of plant sites. This study introduced an example that developed an integrated management system for maintenance parameters and hydraulic turbine of hydro-power plant in order to improve its maintenance strategy as applying CBM techinique. The integrated management system consists of three parts. One is a hardware part including PDA inspection system and several kind of precision measuring instruments. Another is a vibration monitoring system on hydraulic turbine. The other is a software part that takes charge of making hierarchy tree of maintenance parameters and their inspection route, managing accumulated database, assessing health condition of components, and supporting interface with other enterprise management system. The system has been installed at Chuncheon hydro-power plant for test and demonstration. It is expected that the system can contribute database construction for diagnostics and prognostics on facility health condition and systematic accumulation of know-how on operation and maintenance of plant.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the principal causes of vibration problem and find out the method of vibration reduction in a chip-mount system. The principal causes are investigated through measurements of vibration spectrum and model parameters. Modal parameters are obtained by using an experimental model test. Based on the model parameters from experiments. a model of finite element method is formulated. The model presents effective redesign of increasing the natural frequencies in order to reduce the vibration of a chip-mount system. Further, through computer simulation for the behavior of head to be main vibration source, the best acceleration pattern of head movement can be verified to achieve effective head-positioning and reduce the vibration due to head movement.

  • This paper describes a wave modeling method using low-cost sensors. Wave modeling is applied to the wave monitoring system for accurate measurement of ocean wave parameters. The observation of ocean wave parameters is necessary to improve the accuracy of forecast of ocean wave condition. However, the ocean wave parameters measured by a low-cost wave monitoring system suffer from several errors. Therefore we introduce a wave modeling method to compensate the ocean wave parameters corrupted by errors. The proposed method is analyzed using experiments within controlled environment. It is verified that the accuracy of low-cost wave monitoring system can be increased by the proposed method.

  • As ultra-wideband impulse radio (UWB-IR) uses short-duration impulse signals of nanoseconds, even a small number of timing errors can cause a detrimental effect on system performance. A delay-locked loop (DLL) is proposed to synchronize and reduce timing errors. The design of the DLL is vital for UWB systems. In this paper, an improved DLL is introduced to a UWB-IR time-hopping spread-spectrum system. Instead of using only two central correlator branches as in a conventional DLL, the proposed system uses two additional correlator branches with different delay parameters and different weight parameters. The performance of the proposed schemes with the optimal parameters is compared with that of traditional schemes through simulation: the proposed four-branch DLLs achieves less tracking jitter or a longer mean time to lose lock (MTLL) than the conventional two-branch DLLs if proper parameters are chosen.

  • This paper studied the speech parameters less affected by the human emotion for the development of the robust speech recognition system. For this purpose, the effect of emotion on the speech recognition system and robust speech parameters of speech recognition system were studied using speech database containing various emotions. In this study, mel-cepstral coefficient, delta-cepstral coefficient, RASTA mel-cepstral coefficient and frequency warped mel-cepstral coefficient were used as feature parameters. And CMS (Cepstral Mean Subtraction) method were used as a signal bias removal technique. Experimental results showed that the HMM based speaker independent word recognizer using vocal tract length normalized mel-cepstral coefficient, its derivatives and CMS as a signal bias removal showed the best performance of 0.78% word error rate. This corresponds to about a 50% word error reduction as compare to the performance of baseline system using mel-cepstral coefficient, its derivatives and CMS.
