Mitochondria play key roles in the production of cell's energy. Their dominant function is the synthesis of adenosine 5'-triphosphate (ATP) from adenosine diphosphate (ADP) and phosphate (Pi) through the oxidative phosphorylation. Evaluation of drug-induced mitochondrial toxicity has become increasingly important since mitochondrial dysfunction has recently been implicated in numerous diseases including cancer and diabetes mellitus. Mitochondrial functions have been monitored via oxygen consumption, mitochondrial membrane potential, and more importantly via ATP synthesis since ATP synthesis is the most essential function of mitochondria. Various analytical methods have been employed to investigate ATP synthesis in mitochondria, including high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), bioluminescence technique, and pH measurement. However, most of these methods are based on destructive analysis or indirect monitoring through the enzymatic reaction. Infrared absorption spectroscopy (IRAS) is one of the useful techniques for real-time, label-free, and direct monitoring of biological reactions [1,2]. However, the strong water absorption requires very short path length in the order of several micrometers. Transmission measurements with thin path length are not suitable for mitochondrial assays because solution handlings necessary for evaluating mitochondrial toxicity, such as rapid mixing of drugs and oxygen supply, are difficult in such a narrow space. On the other hand, IRAS in the multiple internal reflection (MIR) geometry provides an ideal optical configuration to combine solution handling and aqueous-phase measurement. We have recently reportedon a real-time monitoring of drug-induced necrotic and apoptotic cell death using MIR-IRAS [3,4]. Clear discrimination between viable and damaged cells has been demonstrated, showing a promise as a label-free and real-time detection for cell-based assays. In the present study, we have applied our MIR-IRAS system to mitochondria-based assays by monitoring ATP synthesis in isolated mitochondria from rat livers. Mitochondrial ATP synthesis and hydrolysis were in situ monitored with MIR-IRAS, while dissolved oxygen level and solution pH were simultaneously monitored with O2 and pH electrodes, respectively. It is demonstrated that ATP synthesis and hydrolysis can be monitored by the IR spectral changes in phosphate groups in adenine nucleotides and MIR-IRAS is useful for evaluating time-dependent drug effects of mitochondrial toxicants.

SBAS(Satellite Based Augmentation System) broadcasts the correction message based on satellite communication to improve the positioning accuracy of GNSS user. For this reason, SBAS is actively being utilized on navigation part. To apply SBAS to navigation part, it should satisfy not only accuracy but also integrity, continuity, availability, coverage requirements and so on. Since SBAS reference station is the base infrastructure of SBAS, it is the main factor to determine the environment, position, and geometry of reference stations to achieve SBAS service performance. Therefore, a site environmental analysis should be performed prior to the selection of SBAS reference station. In this paper, it performs the environmental analysis of NDGPS(Nationwide Differential GPS) reference station sites on the premise that SBAS reference station will be co-operated in the same site of NDGPS operated by MOF(Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries). The environmental analysis is conducted as carrying out the visibility analysis of GPS satellite and interference analysis. This paper also presents the brief procedures and requirements for site survey of SBAS reference station.

Oral implants must fulfill certain criteria arising from special demands of function, which include biocompatibility, adequate mechanical strength, optimum soft and hard tissue integration, and transmission of functional forces to bone within physiological limits. And one of the critical elements influencing the long-term uncompromise functioning of oral implants is load distribution at the implant- bone interface, Factors that affect the load transfer at the bone-implant interface include the type of loading, material properties of the implant and prosthesis, implant geometry, surface structure, quality and quantity of the surrounding bone, and nature of the bone-implant interface. To understand the biomechanical behavior of dental implants, validation of stress and strain measurements is required. The finite element analysis (FEA) has been applied to the dental implant field to predict stress distribution patterns in the implant-bone interface by comparison of various implant designs. This method offers the advantage of solving complex structural problems by dividing them into smaller and simpler interrelated sections by using mathematical techniques. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the stresses induced around the implants in bone using FEA, A 3D FEA computer software (SOLIDWORKS 2004, DASSO SYSTEM, France) was used for the analysis of clinical simulations. Two types (external and internal) of implants of 4.1 mm diameter, 12.0 mm length were buried in 4 types of bone modeled. Vertical and oblique forces of lOON were applied on the center of the abutment, and the values of von Mises equivalent stress at the implant-bone interface were computed. The results showed that von Mises stresses at the marginal. bone were higher under oblique load than under vertical load, and the stresses were higher at the lingual marginal bone than at the buccal marginal bone under oblique load. Under vertical and oblique load, the stress in type I, II, III bone was found to be the highest at the marginal bone and the lowest at the bone around apical portions of implant. Higher stresses occurred at the top of the crestal region and lower stresses occurred near the tip of the implant with greater thickness of the cortical shell while high stresses surrounded the fixture apex for type N. The stresses in the crestal region were higher in Model 2 than in Model 1, the stresses near the tip of the implant were higher in Model 1 than Model 2, and Model 2 showed more effective stress distribution than Model.
As one of the methods to ameliorate the ray effects which are the nature of anomalous computational effects due to the discretization of the angular variable in discrete ordinates approximations, a computational program, named TWODET (TWO dimensional Discrete Element Transport), has developed in 2 dimensional cartesian coordinates system using the discrete elements method, in which the discrete angle quadratures are steered by the spatially dependent angular fluxes. The results of the TWODET calculation with K-2, L-3 discrete angular quadratures, in the problem of a centrally located, isotropically emitting flat source in an absorbing square, are shown to be more accurate than that of the DOT 4.3 calculation with S-10 full symmetry angular quadratures, in remedy of the ray effect at the edge flux distributions of the square. But the computing time of the TWODET is about 4 times more than that of the DOT 4.3. In the problem of vacuum boundaries just outside of the source region in an absorbing square, the results of the TWODET calculation are shown severely anomalous ray effects, due to the sudden discontinuity between the source and the vacuum, like as the results of the DOT 4.3 calculation. In the probelm of an external source in an absorbing square in which a highly absorbing medium is added, the results of the TWODET calculation with K-3, L-4 show a good ones like as, somewhat more than, that of the DOT 4.3 calculation with S-10.

Compendium of arithmetic, geometry, and proportions and proportionality' that was published in Venice in 1494 has been recognized as the first bookkeeping data in the world. Major characteristics of Pacioli's bookkeeping rules were reviewed in this study as follows: All the necessary particulars for double entry bookkeeping were provided in Pacioli's bookkeeping rules;. List of property was described at the time of start of business; Three major books were used; Details of daily transactions were considered to be important; Strike through was lined at each description in journal books, details of daily transactions, and list of property after entry of ledger; Amount columns were provided and Arabic numerals were used; Annual settlement custom was being initiated; Profit and loss account was prepared at year-end; Trial balance sheet was inevitably described; Books were verified prior to closing accounts; Control account was not established; Financial statements were not prepared and business analysis was made, too; Finished goods inventory was not adjusted; Mark was assigned to books; Inter-office account was prepared; Branch accounts and branch ledgers were prepared; There was entries of trust; Current arrangement was described; The principle 'Cost or market price, whichever is lower basis' was promoted: Petty cash system is explained Checks and bills of exchange are used in bank account. As mentioned, characteristics of Pacioli's bookkeeping rules were reviewed; the signs of necessity for preparation of profit and loss statement and balance sheet is found as well as preparation of trial balance sheet and the rules may be considered as a very excellent one in terms of the bookkeeping on initiating stage of double entry bookkeeping.
Wind blown sand is expected to disrupt the operation of the railway as the presented railway project in this paper consists of large earthworks in extreme topography of the mega dune fields. For successful railway construction in sand dune area, effective mitigation measure is the most important factor to protect the track from wind blown sand. The effective mitigation measure requires an integrated consideration of the earthworks geometry and the direct control measures such as fence system. Basically there's no perfect measure protecting railway track from wind blown sand, and it would be more economical and effective to develop robust, deliberate maintenance program for track and direct control measure on the basis of geo-morphological study. The purpose of this study is to identify the large scale geo-morphological terrains and specific sand dune morphology in the project area in UAE and estimate the direction and migration rate for sand dunes with the local variations in prevailing wind directions by undertaking literature review, and aerial photographs, satellite images, and ground studies.

Submarines, which have been called an invisible force, are strategic underwater weapon systems that perform missions such as anti-surface warfare, anti-submarine warfare, and high payoff target strikes with the advantage of underwater covertness. A submarine should be able to withstand the hydrostatic pressure of the deep sea. In this respect, the submarine pressure hull, as the main structural system to resist the external pressure corresponding to the submerged depth, should ensure the survivability from hazards and threats such as leakage, fires, shock, explosion, etc. To do this, the initial scantling of the submarine pressure hull must be calculated appropriately in the concept design phase. The shape of the aft transition ring varies according to its connection with the submarine aft end conical structure, pressure hull cylindrical part, and non-pressure hull of the submarine; the design of the aft transition ring should not only take into account stress flow and connectivity but also the cost increase due to the increased man-hours of its complex geometry. Therefore, trade-off studies based on the four different shapes of the aft transition ring are carried out considering both the review of the structural strength through nonlinear finite element analysis (FEA) and economic feasibility by reviewing the estimations of the manufacturing working days and material costs. Finally, the most rational structural aft transition ring shape for a submarine amongst four reviewed types was proposed.
Natural convection heat transfer rates in vertical pipes were measured varying the diameter, length, and roughness of vertical cylinder. To achieve high Rayleigh number with relatively small test rig, mass transfer experiments instead of heat transfer were performed based on the analogy. Prandtl number was 2,014. The length of vertical cylinder was 0.1m, 0.3m, and 0.5m, which correspond to GrL $4.2{\times}10^7$, $1.1{\times}10^9$, and $5.5{\times}10^9$. To each length of vertical cylinder, the heat transfer rates were measured varying the iameter 0.005m, 0.01m, and 0.03m. The heat transfer rate for a short length pipe(0.1m) agreed with the prediction from Le Fevre correlation developed for a vertical plate for all diameter. The heat transfer rate decreases as the diameter and the length of the pipe increases. The heat transfer rate inside of vertical cylinder is affected by roughness only for a laminar flow regime.
