  • One important measure of performance for a repairable system is steady-state availability. In this paper, a method to estimate and establish confidence interval for the steady-state availability under Weibull lifetime and lognormal repair time distributions is proposed. Also, bias and mean squared error of a point estimator for an availability are investigated. In addition, a procedure to derive the sample size and critical value for availability demonstration test is presented and illustrated with a numerical example.

Dynamic Replication Based on Availability and Popularity in the Presence of Failures

  • The data grid provides geographically distributed resources for large-scale applications. It generates a large set of data. The replication of this data in several sites of the grid is an effective solution for achieving good performance. In this paper we propose an approach of dynamic replication in a hierarchical grid that takes into account crash failures in the system. The replication decision is taken based on two parameters: the availability and popularity of the data. The administrator requires a minimum rate of availability for each piece of data according to its access history in previous periods, but this availability may increase if the demand is high on this data. We also proposed a strategy to keep the desired availability respected even in case of a failure or rarity (no-popularity) of the data. The simulation results show the effectiveness of our replication strategy in terms of response time, the unavailability of requests, and availability.

  • A unreliable network system results in unsatisfied performance. A performance criterion of a network is throughput and availability. One of the most compelling technological advances of this decade has been the advent of deploying wireless networks of heterogeneous smart sensor nodes for complex information gathering tasks, The advancement and popularization of wireless communication technologies make more efficiency to network devices with wireless technology than with wired technology. Recently, the research of wireless sensor network has been drawing much attentions. In this paper, We evaluate throughput and availability of wireless sensor network, which have hierarchical structure based on clustering and estimate the maximum hroughput, average throughput and availability of the network considering several link failure patterns likely to happen at a cluster consisted of sensor nodes. Also increasing a number of sensor nodes in a cluster, We analysis the average throughput and availability of the network.

  • Navy forces of ROK asked for more than 90% operational availability in the requirement document of combat ship. This study proposes the evaluation methodology of operational availability with the evaluation process, calculation formula, analysis of operational test data. As the case study, the developed methodology is proved to apply for 00 batch-I naval ship using the data to be acquired during the operational test period. The operational availability by test data was 90.03%, and it was satisfied with objective value 90%. The paper will contribute not only to establish the evaluation methodology of operational availability for combat ship but also other general weapon system.

  • In this paper, we define an availability of repairable network system, when the states of links are modeled by alternating renewal processes. The actual availabilities of some well-known network systems are obtained. The expected numbers of failures and repairs of the network systems are also calculated.

  • Cloud computing integrates computing resources such as servers, storage, and networks with virtualization technology to provide suitable services according to user needs. Due to the structural characteristics of sharing physical resources based on virtualization technology, threats to availability can occur, so it is essential to respond to availability threats in cloud computing. Existing over-provisioning method is not suitable because it can generate idle resources and cause under-provisioning to degrade or disconnect service. System resources must be allocated in real-time according to the system load to guarantee the cloud system's availability. Through appropriate management measures, it is necessary to reduce the system load and increase the performance of the system. This paper analyzes the work response time according to the allocation or migration of virtual machines and discusses an efficient resource management method considering the system load.

다단계 공급체인에서의 장비운용가용도 시뮬레이션 분석 (An Operational Availability Analysis in Supply Chain Using Simulation)

  • This study shows the operational availability(Ao) analysis of the supply chain with maintenance functions using the system dynamics simulation. The simulation uses 60 equipments which are serial systems composed by 4 major components. And every entities are connected each other by causal loops. So whole simulation executed like one organic system. Specially we consider 2 constraints, one is the number of spare parts and the other is maintenance capacity level. 2 constraints have 11 levels each so the simulation has 121(11*11) scenarios which scenario has 30 different random number seed. The simulation executed total 3,630(11*11*30) times. We analysis average Ao of total equipments by 121 scenarios and additionally the regression of the average Ao and 2 constraints. As the result, we can get the more accurate values by the system dynamics simulation than the regression to analysis complex system like the supply chain with maintenance functions.

Repair policies of failure detection equipments and system availability

  • The total system is composed of the main system (MS) and the failure detection equipment (FDE) which detects failures of MS. The analysis of system reliability is performed when the failure of FDE is possible. Several repair policies are considered to determine the order of repair of failed systems, which are sequential repair (SQ), priority repair (PR), independent repair (ID), and simultaneous repair (SM). The states of MS-FDE systems are represented by Markov models according to repair policies and the main purpose of this paper is to derive the system availabilities of the Markov models. Analytical solutions of the stationary equations are derived for the Markov models and the system availabilities are immediately determined using the stationary solutions. A simple illustrative example is discussed for the comparison of availability values of the repair policies considered in this paper.
