Adsorption and Molecular Sieve Properties on the Natural Zeolite with Chemical Surface treatment (화학적 표면처리에 의한 천연 제올라이트의 흡착 및 분자체 특성)

  • The adsorption and molecular sieve characteristics of water, methanol, ethanol, butanol and benzene on acid-alkali treated natural zeolite from Kampo area were investigated by the Diamond·Kinter method, and it was compared with synthetic zeolite A. Adsorption amount of water increased with the treatment of acid rather than the treatment of alkali. Similar tendency was observedd in adsorption of alcohols such as methanol, ethanol and butanol, but the amount of adsorption decreased. From the views of the molecular size, adsorption amount of benzene decreased because of surface activity according to the cations species rather than chemical treatment. And it was almost same value that the amount of adsorption was compared acid treated natural zeolite with synthetic zeolite A.

Feasibility Study of the microDiamond Detector for Measurement of Small Field Photon Beam (광자선 소조사면 선량측정을 위한 microDiamond 검출기의 유용성 고찰)

  • The dosimetry of very small fields is challenging for several reasons including a lack of lateral electronic equilibrium, large dose gradients, and the size of detector in respect to the field size. The objective of this work was to evaluate the suitability of a new commercial synthetic diamond detector, namely, the PTW 60019 microDiamond, for the small field dosimetry in cyberknife photon beams of 6 different collimator size (from 5 mm to 30 mm). Measurements included dose linearity, dose rate dependence, output factors (OF), percentage depth doses (PDD) and off center ratio (OCR). The results were compared to those of pinpoint ionization chamber, diamond detector, microLion liquid Ionization chamber and diode detector. The dose linearity results for the microDiamond detector showed good linearly proportional to dose. The microDiamond detector showed little dose rate dependency throughout the range of 100~600 MU/min, while microLion liquid Ionization chamber showed a significant discrepancy of approximately 5.8%. The OF measured with microDiamond detector agreed within 3.8% with those measured with diode. PDD curves measured with silicon diode and diamond detector agreed well for all the field sizes. In particular, slightly sharper penumbras are obtained by the microDiamond detector, indicating a good spatial resolution. The results obtained confirm that the new PTW 60019 microDiamond detector is suitable candidate for application in small radiation fields dosimetry.

A Surface Etching for Synthetic Diamonds with Nano-Thick Ni Films and Low Temperature Annealing

  • Ni (100 nm thick) was deposited onto synthesized diamonds to fabricate etched diamonds. Next, those diamonds were annealed at varying temperatures ($400{\sim}1200^{\circ}C$) for 30 minutes and then immersed in 30 wt% $HNO_3$ to remove the Ni layers. The etched properties of the diamonds were examined with FE-SEM, micro-Raman, and VSM. The FE-SEM results showed that the Ni agglomerated at a low annealing temperature (${\sim}400^{\circ}C$), and self-aligned hemisphere dots formed at an annealing temperature of $800^{\circ}C$. Those dots became smaller with a bimodal distribution as the annealing temperature increased. After stripping the Ni layers, etch pits and trigons formed with annealing temperatures above $400^{\circ}C$ on the surface of the diamonds. However, surface graphite layers existed above $1000^{\circ}C$. The B-H loop results showed that the coercivity of the samples increased to 320 Oe (from 37 Oe) when the annealing temperature increased to $600^{\circ}C$ and then, decreased to 150 Oe with elevated annealing temperatures. This result indicates that the coercivity was affected by magnetic domain pinning at temperatures below $600^{\circ}C$ and single domain behavior at elevated temperatures above $800^{\circ}C$ consistent with the microstructure results. Thus, the results of this study show that the surface of diamonds can be etched.

Cutting Characteristics of Oxygen-Free Using the Ultra Precision Machining (초정밀가공기를 이용한 무산소동 절삭특성)

  • The needs of ultra-precisely machined parts are increasing more and more. But the experimental data required to ultra precision machining of nonferrous metal is insufficient. The behavior of cutting in micro cutting area is different from that of traditional cutting because of the size effect. Copper is widely used as optical parts such as LASER reflector's mirror and multimedia instrument. In experimental, after oxygen-free copper is machined by ultra precision machine with natural mono crystal diamond tool (NCD) and synthetic poly crystal diamond tool (PCD), we compared chip formation and tool's wear according to used tool. Also, we researched optimized cutting condition with the results measured according to cutting condition such as spindle speed, feed rate and depth of cut. As a result, the optimal working condition that makes good surface roughness is obtained. The surface roughness is good when spindle speed is above 80 m/min, and feed rate is small and depth of cut is above 0.5 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$. In cutting of klystron anode and cavity 3.2 nmRa of surface roughness is obtained.

The single crystal growth of various colored cubic zirconia for jewelry (다양한 색의 보석용 큐빅 지르코니아 단결정 성장)

  • The various colored cubic zirconia single crystals for jewelry were grown by skull melting method of excellent productivity. The cubic zirconia is similar to the character of diamond, which has high refractive index, large dispersion and high hardness. It is possible that the development of new colored cubic zirconia by doping 3d-transition elements or 4f-rare earth elements. The colored cubic zirconia is representative of synthetic gemstone which was grown up by mixing one or over two materials among $Pr_6O_{11},\;TiO_2,\;MnO_2\;and\;Er_2O_3$ as coloring agent. Subsequent heat treatment improves the quality of color and uniformity. This study is aimed the color reappearance of cubic zirconia such as natural peridot, smoky-quartz and red-tourmaline.

Spectroscopic analysis of near colorless/pink/blue synthetic diamonds from Lightbox ('라이트박스' 무색/핑크/블루 합성 다이아몬드의 분광학적 분석)

  • This article reports the result on the spectroscopic analysis of the three Lightbox CVD-grown diamonds. Lightbox Jewelry, a De Beers company, has begun selling CVD laboratory-grown diamonds since September 2018. Recently, we had the opportunity to examine three Lightbox's pendant necklaces. The 0.25 ct, 0.25 ct, and 0.26 ct round brilliant were graded as "H" near colorless, Fancy Vivid orangy pink, and Fancy Vivid blue with cut grades of excellent, respectively. The laser-inscribed Lightbox logo under the table, large enough to be easily visible with a microscope. Based on the spectroscopic techniques, for near colorless sample was not subjected to post-growth HPHT processing to improve its color. For pink sample, optical centers at H3, 3H, 594 nm, NV, and GR1 were recorded. It was speculated that the pink sample have been received irradiation and annealing. In addition, the blue CVD synthetic sample was concluded to be irradiated without annealing.

A Compression Study on a Synthetic Talc (합성 활석에 대한 압축 연구)

  • Talc ($Mg_3Si_4O_{10}(OH)_2$), one of sheet silicates, is soft and has been widely used in industry. Powdered talc specimen was synthesized at the pressure of 200 MPa and temperature of $600^{\circ}C$ using external heated hydrothermal high pressure apparatus. High pressure angular dispersive X-ray diffraction (ADXRD) mode experiments were performed at the Pohang Light Source (PLS) using the symmetrical diamond anvil cell (SDAC). Compression pressure was loaded up to 11.06 GPa at room temperature. This synthetic talc shows no phase transition(s) within the present pressure limit. Based on ADXRD data, bulk modulus of talc was calculated to be 72.4 GPa using Birch-Muranghan equation of state (EOS). This value is lower than that of natural talc determined previously.

The Effect of Calcium Phosphate Addition in HPHT Synthetic Diamond Process (고온고압 합성다이아몬드 공정에서 인산칼슘 첨가의 영향)

  • 육방정프레스 $420{\phi}$를 활용한 고온고압(high pressure high temperature: HPHT) 방법으로 금속촉매층 ($Ni_{77}Fe_{11}Mn_9Co_3$)과 카본디스크가 순차적으로 적층된 셀에 인산칼슘을 첨가함에 따라 합성다이아몬드 성장에 미치는 변화를 확인하였다. HPHT 공정의 압력, 온도, 시간을 각각 8 GPa, $1500^{\circ}C$, 280s로 고정하고, 카본과 금속촉매 층 사이에 인산칼슘을 각각 0, 0.08, 0.20, 0.28 mg씩 첨가하여 고온고압 합성을 수행하였다. 합성공정 후 적층셀의 중간부 셀 수직단면을 광학현미경과 마이크로 라만분광기로 분석하였다. 결과적으로 인산칼슘을 0.08 mg 도포하여 첨가하면 다이아몬드의 생성이 향상되었다. 반면 0.20 mg 이상에서는 도포되는 양이 증가 할수록 다이아몬드 생성이 억제되다가 0.28 mg 이상 첨가에서는 다이아몬드가 거의 생성되지 않는 특징을 보였다.

A Phase Transformation Study on Amorphous Diopside ($CaMgSi_2O_6$) (비정질 투휘석($CaMgSi_2O_6$)에 대한 상변이 연구)

  • A phase transformation study on a synthetic amorphous diopside, $(Ca,Mg)SiO_3$has been carried out up to ∼30 GPa, and ∼$1000^{\circ}C$ using a diamond anvil cell and YAG laser heating system, respectively. A starting amorphous material shows a direct transition to cubic $(Ca,Mg)SiO_3$perovskite at high pressure, which contradicts to the crystalline diopside phase transformation sequence disproportionating into mixtures of the orthorhombic$ MgSiO_3$perovskite and the cubic $CaSiO_3$perovskite phases. This discrepancy might be due to the different starting materials as well as the temperature variations at each specific experiment performed. The present phase transfor mation sequence would modify the mineralogical assemblage in the Earth transition region and the lower mantle depending upon the pressure, temperature and the oxygen partial pressure.

High Pressure X-ray Diffraction Study of LiFePO4/C-olivine-like Phase (LiFePO4/C-유사 감람석 결정구조에 대한 고압 X-선회절연구)

  • Synthetic carbon-coated olivine-like structured lithium iron phosphate ($Li^+Fe^{2+}(PO_4)^{3-}/C$) powder composites were compressed up to 35.0 GPa in the symmetrical diamond anvil cell at room temperature. Bulk modulus of $LiFePO_4/C$ was determined to be $130.1{\pm}10.3$ GPa. New peak appears at the d-spacing of 3.386 ${\AA}$ above 18 GPa, and another new one at 2.854 ${\AA}$ around 35 GPa. The crystallographic symmetry of the sample (i.e. orthorhombic) is apparently retained up to 35 GPa as no clear evidence for the phase transition into spinel structure has been observed. The pressure-induced volume change in the M1 site ($Li^+O_6$) is more significant than those in M2($Fe^{2+}O_6$) and $PO_4$ tetrahedral sites.
