In modern society, interest in antioxidants is increasing as the stress caused by oxidants increases. However, the demand for synthetic antioxidants is decreasing because some studies have confirmed that they are harmful when consumed in large quantities; thus, studies on antioxidants derived from natural substances are actively being conducted to replace synthetic antioxidants. Blueberry, known as one of the world's top ten long-lived foods, is a plant of the Vaccinium (Ericaceae) family, and various pharmacological activities of blueberry including antioxidant activity have been studied. Vaccinium oldhamii (VO) is a deciduous broad-leaved shrub in the same genus as blueberries, and in this paper, we summarize the studies on the efficacy analysis of VO extracts and purified products. The content of phenolic compounds in VO fruits was proportional to antioxidant and anti-influenza activity such as the inhibition of NO production, and the total content of polyphenols and anthocyanin was higher than that in blueberries. VO fruit extracts showed anti-inflammatory activity and anti-cancer activity against human acute leukemia; in contrast, VO branch extracts showed anti-inflammatory activity, activity to inhibit osteoclast differentiation and bone resorption due to inflammatory response, and anti-cancer activity against several human cancer cell lines. Compared to blueberries, VO showed higher phenolic compound content, antioxidant activity, and various physiological activities. In addition, VO is considered to have sufficient value as an alternative crop to blueberries, such as it can be grown natively in Korea, with simple mass cultivation and no need to pay royalties for commercialization.
The purpose of this study was to investigate whether the ashed tooth powder is utilized as an alternative material of the implant to recovery the bony defect. For this purpose its biocompatibility was evaluated comparing to the synthetic calcium phosphate compounds, such as Syntograft and Calcitite, as well as the vacuum firing porcelain (Ceramco Inc.) which is anticipated to use as a matrix to aid sintering. Bony defects to exposure the bone marrow, $3{\times}5$ mm in size, were created in the right and left tibias of fifteen rabbits, and then the ashed tooth powder at $950^{\circ}C$, the porcelain powder, Syhtograft and Calcitite were inserted in the defects of twelve rabbits of the experimental group and the blood clot only was filled in the defects of three rabbits of the control group. The experimental and control rabbits were sacrificed at 1st, 2nd 3rd week after implantation and the histologic examination was performed. The ashed tooth powder in order to make the needed form of the implant was molded using the cylindrical mold 1 cm high, 1 cm in diameter under the pressure of $1000kg/cm^2$ and the ashed tooth powder was sintered at $1100^{\circ}C$ for 1 hour and the mixture of the porcelain powder and the ashed tooth powder at the weight ratio of 7:3, 6:4, 5:5, 4:6 were molded in the same manner and were sintered at $925^{\circ}C$. From this sintered material, square shaped implants were prepared in the dimension of $2{\times}4{\times}6mm$. The prepared implants were surgically placed in the subperiosteum of lateral surfaces of the right and left mandibular bodies. The dogs were sacrificed at 4 weeks, and then the specimens were examined using the light and scanning electron microscopes. The results of this study were obtained as follows: 1. Any inflammatory response was not noted after implanting of the ashed tooth powder, Syntograft, Calcitite and the porcelain powder during the whole experimental period after implantation. 2. Induction of the new bone formation was significantly shown in the ashed tooth powder, Syntograft and Calcitite. 3. The more the porcelain powder was contained in the implants, the more the porosity was and the bigger the pore size was under the scanning electron microscope. And there was ingrowing of the fibrous connective and the osteoid tissue. 4. The osteoid tissues were found to be directly fused to the implant of the ashed tooth powder, and the mixture implant of the porcelain powder and the ashed tooth powder at the weight ratio of 4:6 under the light and scanning electron microscopes.
Basic studies have been conducted regarding the crystal formation of hydroxyapatite which was produced in the treatment process of phosphate-containing wastewater using calcium ions as the precipitating agent for its employment as the material for artificial bones. The precipitation of hydroxyapatite were conducted in the synthetic solution which simulating human body fluid for its increased applicability. Ca($NO_3$)$_2$$.$$4H_2$O and ($NH_4$)$_2$$HPO_4$ were employed for the precipitation of hydroxyapatite and its composition was analyzed after drying at 80oC. The thermal behavior of precipitate was investigated by examining the change in its crystalline structure according to the sintering temperature. DTA/TG analysis showed that the escape of moisture from the precipitate occurred at ca. $100^{\circ}C$ and the decomposition of ammonia and the evaporation of lattice water were brought about at around $250^{\circ}C$. X-ray diffraction analysis indicated that the thermally treated precipitate consisted mainly of hydroxyapatite. For dried precipitate, the bonds in the component materials which used for the precipitate formation were observed by FT-IR, and after thermal treatment the major bonds in the precipitate were shown to be $OH^{-}$, $PO_4^{3-}$ , and $CO_3^{ 2-}$ , which were main comprising bonds of hydroxyapatite.

Tissue engineering techniques require the use of a porous biodegradable/bioresorbable scaffold, which server as a three-dimensional template for initial cell attachment and subsequent tissue formation in both in vitro and in vivo. Small intestinal submucosa (SIS) has been investigated as a source of collagenous tissue with the potential to be used as biomaterials because of its inherent strength and biocompatibility. SIS-loaded poly(L-lactide-co-glicolide)(PLGA) scaffolds were prepared by solvent casting/particle leaching. Characterizations of SIS/PLGA scaffold were carried out by SEM, mercury porosimeter, and so on. Muscle-derived stem cells can be differentiated in culture into osteoblasts, chondrocytes, and even myoblasts by the controlling the culture environment. Cellular viability and proliferation were assayed by 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazole-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium-bromide(MTT) test. Osteogenic differential cells were analyzed by alkaline phosphatase(ALP) activity. SIS/PLGA scaffolds were implanted into the back of athymic nude mouse to observe the effect of SIS on the osteoinduction compared with controlled PLGA scaffolds. Thin sections were cut from paraffin embedded tissues and histological sections were conducted hematoxylin and eosin (H&E), Trichrome, and von Kossa. We observed that bone formatioin of SIS/PLGA hybrid scaffold as natural/synthetic scaffold was better thean that of only PLGA scaffold. It canb be explained that SIS contains various kinds of bioactive molecules for osteoinduction.

Estrogen-related receptor γ (ERRγ), a member of the orphan nuclear receptor family, is a key mediator in cellular metabolic processes and energy homeostasis. Therefore, ERRγ has become an attractive target for treating diverse metabolic disorders. We recently reported that ERRγ acts as a negative regulator of osteoclastogenesis induced by receptor activator of nuclear factor-κB ligand (RANKL). In the present study, we explored the effects of an ERRγ-specific modulator, GSK5182, on ERRγ-regulated osteoclast differentiation and survival. Interestingly, GSK5182 increased ERRγ protein levels much as does GSK4716, which is an ERRγ agonist. GSK5182 inhibited osteoclast generation from bone-marrow-derived macrophages without affecting cytotoxicity. GSK5182 also attenuated RANKL-mediated expression of cFos and nuclear factor of activated T-cells cytoplasmic 1 (NFATc1), pivotal transcription factors for osteoclastogenesis. Arrested osteoclast differentiation was associated with reduced RANK expression, but not with the M-CSF receptor, c-Fms. GSK5182 strongly blocked the phosphorylation of IκBα, c-Jun N-terminal kinase, and extracellular signal-regulated kinase in response to RANKL. GSK5182 also suppressed NF-κB promoter activity in a dose-dependent manner. In addition to osteoclastogenesis, GSK5182 accelerated osteoclast apoptosis by caspase-3 activation. Together, these results suggest that GSK5182, a synthetic ERRγ modulator, may have potential in treating disorders related to bone resorption.
Various bonegraft materials and the technique of guided tissue regeneration have been used to regenerate lost periodontal tissue. Calcium sulfate has been known as a bone graft material because of good biocompatibility, rapid resorption and effective osteoinduction. It has been known that calcium sulfate works as a binder to stabilize the defect when it is used with synthetic graft materials. The effects on the regeneration of pericxiontal tissue were studied in dogs after grafting 3-wall intrabony defects with calcium carbonate and calcium sulfate and covering with calcium sulfate barrier. The 3-wall intrabony defectstdmm width, 4mm depth, 4mm length) were created in anterior area and treated with flap operation alone(contol group), with porous resorbable calcium carbonate graft alonetexperirnental group 1), with calcium sulfate graft alonetexperimental group 2) and with composite graft of 80% calcium carbonate and 20% calcium sulfate with calcium sulfate barriertexperimental group 3). Healing responses were histologically observed after 8 weeks and the results were as follows: 1. The alveolar bone formation was $0.59{\pm}0.19mm$ in the control group, $1.80{\pm}0.25mm$ in experimental group 1, $1.61{\pm}0.21mm$ in experimental group 2 and $1.94{\pm}0.11mm$ in experimental group 3 with statistically significant differences between control group and all experimental groups(P<0.05). There were statistically significant differences between experimental group 1 and group 2 (P<0.05). 2. The new cementum formation was $0.48{\pm}0.19mm$ in the control group. $1.72{\pm}0.26mm$ in experimental group 1, $1.43{\pm}0.17mm$ in experimental group 2, $1.89{\pm}0.15mm$ in experimental group 3 with statiscally significant differences between control group and all experimental groups (p<0.05). There were statistically significant differences between experimental group 1 and group 2, and between experimental group 2 and group 3(P<0.05). 3. The length of junctional epithelium was $1.61{\pm}0.20mm$ in the contol group, $0.95{\pm}0.06mm$ in experimental group 1, $1.34{\pm}0.16mm$ in experimental group 2, $1.08{\pm}0.11mm$ in experimental group 3 with statiscally significant differences between control group and experimental group 1. and btween control group and experimental group 3(p<0.05). There were statistically significant differences between experimental group 1 ,and group 2, and between experimental group 2 and group 3(P<0.05). 4. The connective tissue adhesion was $1.67{\pm}O.20mm$ in the control group, $1.33{\pm}0.24mm$ in experimental group 1. $1.23{\pm}0.16mm$ in experimental group 2, $1.08{\pm}0.14mm$ in experimental group 3 with statistically significant differences between control group and all experimental groups(p<0.05). There were nostatistically significant differences between all experimental groups. As a result, epithelial migration was not prevented when calcium sulfate was used alone, but new bone and cementum formation were enhanced. Epithelial migration was prevented and new bone and cementum formation were also enhanced when calcium carbonate was used alone and when both calcium carbonate and calcium sulfate were used.
In methods of finding causes for cleft palate, many cases have been studied by investigators using teratogenic agents. Among them, a synthetic agent known as triamcinolone acetonide (TA) was widely used. When this drug was injected into mice during palatogenesis, it induced lowered body weight and a deformed mandible. But many cases have been studied on growth changes, only of the developmental stages of the palate. Therefore, the objective of this study was to evaluate craniofacial growth in experimentally induced cleft palate mice after finishing palatogenesis namely just before birth. Normal, alcohol treated, and TA treated DDY mice were obtained at 18-days of gestation and heads were prepared for serial sectioning in the sagittal plane. The midsagittal sections were photographically enlarged (${\times}40$) and measurements made to asses the amount of growth. The obtained results were as follows. 1. The incidence of cleft palate was 41.2% when TA was injected. 2. The body weight of the cleft palate group was lower than the control group. 3. In the cleft palate group, mandibular length (H-M) was lighter than the control group. 4. In the cleft palate group, degree of staining was not distinct compared to the control group by the double staining method. 5. In the cleft palate group, anteroposterior posture of the tongue tip to facial plane (C-M) was more posterior than the control group. 6. The cause of posterior posture of the tongue tip to facial plane (C-M) in the cleft palate group, was not short and retracted tongue but the mandibular length was increased. 7. The anteroposterior relationship of hyoid cartilage to cranial base was the same in all groups.

Synthetic polymers such as PET and ePTFE have widely been used for artificial vascular patches. However, these materials cannot function for a long term as blood vessel due to thrombotic occlusion and calcification. To overcome this limitation, a biocompatible vascular patch was developed using stem cell and tissue engineering approach. Autologous bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells were differentiated into vascular endothelial cells and smooth muscle cells. These cells were seeded onto collagen patch matrices. The matrices were anastomosed to abdominal arteries in canine models. Prior to implantation, histological and scanning electron microscopical examination revealed stem cell adhesion and growth on the matrices. At 3 weeks, the implanted vascular patches were patent. Histological examination showed the regeneration of endothelium, media and adventitia in the grafts. Cell tracing analysis using fluorescent reagent showed that labeled stem cells were present in the implanted grafts and contributed to the regeneration of vascular tissues. This study may help us develop a tissue-engineered vascular patch appropriate for clinical applications.
This study was conducted to investigate the effects of protein levels and casein/whey ratios on organ growth and protein metabolism in early weaned rats. Premature rats weaned by the 17th day were fed six semipurified synthetic, isocaloric and gel diets that contained three levels (low, medium and high) and two different combinations(casein/whey ; 80 : 20 or 20 : 80) of milk protein for 8 days. On the 25th day postpartum, frest weigth and DNA, RNA and milk protein contents in brain, liver, kidney and muscle were determined to ascertain organ and cellular growth. Futher, with a view to ascertain protein metabolism and renal functions, serum total protein, $\alpha$-amino N, urea N, and creatinine and creatinine and urinary urea N, creatinine and hydroxproline were determined. Total DNA contents of brain, liver and kidney, which may represent as an index of cell numbers in those organs were significantly decreased in the rats fed diets containing low level protein regardless of casein/whey ratio. However, as fat as the rats fed high protein diets were concerned, their fresh weight, protein contents and GFR of kidney were significantly increased. Furthermore, nitrogen components, $\alpha$-amino N, urea N and creatinie in serum and urine were also increassed. Another observation was that high casein/whey ratio significantly facilitated accumulation of porteins in muscle and kidney and urinary hydorxyproline excretion, not affecting the DNA content of those organs. This study showed that low(8%) or high(32%) contents of protein had less desirable effects either on protein metabolism or on organ cellular growth in prematurely weaned rats, whereas there were no effects on general growth and bone strength.

Scientific analysis was conducted to identify the paint pigments used in the Buseoksa Josadang murals. optical microscopy(OM), X-ray fluorescence(XRF), XRF mapping, scanning electron microscopy-energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy(SEM-EDS), and Raman spectroscopy were performed to examine the pigments. The results confirmed that the Josadang murals consist of two paint layers wherein the pigments were distinct for most colors. It was estimated that celadonite, white clay, red ochre, cinnabar and minium, synthetic green pigment containing tin and zinc paratacamite, or botallackite were used in the upper layer. In addition, bone white, celadonite, red ochre, azurite, cinnabar or vermilion, and gold were identified in the lower layer. In addition, as Zn and Sn were detected in the green pigments extracted from the top layer of the paint, it is believed that Josadang murals were repainted over the original paint layer at some point after the 17th century. In addition, white pigments containing calcium phosphate were found in all the colors in the bottom layer, which is the original paint layer. These results are significant because this is the first time that white pigments are found in Korean traditional paintings. Additionally, the information revealed about the pigments in this study will serve as areference for the pigments used in the Goryeo period.
