The death scenes are the culmination of both Doris Lessing's "To Room Nineteen" and Toni Morrison's Sula. Lessing's Susan, an intelligent white English woman, gradually loses the meaning of life as awealthy housewife in the patriarchal society and commits suicide as her solution in Room Nineteen of Fred's Hotel. Morrison's Sula, an African-American woman, grows up without having the normal ego under Eva's matriarchy in a black community named the Bottom. Sula, after Nel's marriage, becomes a symbol of evil to her community and drifts down to death in Eva's bed. Reading these two death stories from the perspective of Jung's archetypal psychology, Susan is not able to continue to live a meaningful life because her life energy is cut off from its source which is in the unconscious. According to Jung, the symbol is the medium of the psychic energy from the unconscious to consciousness. In modern society which is represented by intelligence, the religious and mythical symbols are removed by rationalism, which means disconnection of the flow of life energy from the unconscious. Susan's death can be read as a kind of creating symbol to connect the modern people to the source of life energy. Sula's case is the opposite of Susan's. She remains in the unconscious world without having the proper ego in the absurd reality of racial and sexual problems. Sula finally rises again in Nel's awareness, becoming a symbol of the feminine goddess like goddess Inanna.
This paper expands an analytical performance model of 802.11 to accurately estimate throughput and energy demand of 802.11-based wireless sensor network (WSN) when sensor nodes employ Reed-Solomon (RS) codes, one of block forward error correction (FEC) techniques. This model evaluates these two metrics as a function of the channel bit error rate (BER) and the RS symbol size. Since the basic recovery unit of RS codes is a symbol not a bit, the symbol size affects the WSN performance even if each packet carries the same amount of FEC check bits. The larger size is more effective to recover long-lasting error bursts although it increases the computational complexity of encoding and decoding RS codes. For applying the extended model to WSNs, this paper collects traffic traces from a WSN consisting of two TIP50CM sensor nodes and measures its energy consumption for processing RS codes. Based on traces, it approximates WSN channels with Gilbert models. The computational analyses confirm that the adoption of RS codes in 802.11 significantly improves its throughput and energy efficiency of WSNs with a high BER. They also predict that the choice of an appropriate RS symbol size causes a lot of difference in throughput and power waste over short-term durations while the symbol size rarely affects the long-term average of these metrics.

This paper proposes a new concept of a signal constellation of the recently introduced half-symbol-rate-carrier phase-shift keying (HSRC-PSK) modulations for bandwidth-efficient high speed data communications. Since the HSRC-PSK modulations contain different symbol energies representing the same bit sequences due to the loss of orthogonality of their HSRC signals, it is very hard to represent the symbol using the conventional signal constellation. To resolve the problem, two different energies are assigned to represent one symbol for the HSRC offset quadrature phase shift keying (OQPSK) modulation. Similarly, the different energies exist to display the different symbol for HSRC minimum shift keying (MSK) modulation. With the proposed signal space representation, HSRC-PSK symbol can easily be shown with a two-dimensional scatter plot which provides helpful information of evaluating HSRC-PSK signal's quality.
This paper analytically evaluates the FEC(Forward Error Correction) symbol size's effect on the performance and energy consumption of 802.11 protocol with the block FEC algorithm over WSN(Wireless Sensor Network). Since the basic recovery unit of block FEC algorithms is symbols not bits, the FEC symbol size affects the packet correction rate even with the same amount of FEC check bits over a given WSN channel. Precisely, when the same amount of FEC check bits are allocated, the small-size symbols are effective over channels with frequent short bursts of propagation errors while the large ones are good at remedying the long rare bursts. To estimate the effect of the FEC symbol site, the paper at first models the WSN channel with Gilbert model based on real packet traces collected over TIP50CM sensor nodes and measures the energy consumed for encoding and decoding the RS (Reed-Solomon) code with various symbol sizes. Based on the WSN channel model and each RS code's energy expenditure, it analytically calculates the transmission efficiency and power consumption of 802.11 equipped with RS code. The computational analysis combined with real experimental data shows that the RS symbol size makes a difference of up to 4.2% in the transmission efficiency and 35% in energy consumption even with the same amount of FEC check bits.

In this paper, we propose a new symbol offset estimation technique for an orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM)-based wireless LAN. When both inter-symbol interference (ISI) and inter-channel interference (ICI) do not exist in an OFDM symbol, symbol offsets cause circular shifts in the estimated channel impulse response (CIR) by the amount of symbol offset. Also, the power delay profile of a typical multipath wireless channel can be modeled by exponentially decaying function, and most energy of multipath channel is concentrated at the beginning part of the CIR. Based on these properties, the proposed symbol offset estimation technique estimates the CIR, which is circularly shifted by the amount of symbol offset, and then calculates the partial mean power from the estimated impulse response by using a moving window with a finite length. And, symbol offset can be estimated from the index of a moving window having the maximal partial mean power. The proposed technique can reduce noise effect in the process of the CIR estimation, and remove ISI and ICI using repetitive training symbol structure in time-domain for minimum training overhead. The performances of the proposed symbol offset estimation technique in typical indoor channels are demonstrated by computer simulation.

In this paper, we propose a technique of a practical symbol acquisition and tracking using a low complex ADC and simple digital circuits for noncoherent asynchronous impulse-radio-based Ultra Wideband (IR-UWB) receiver based on energy detection. Compared to previous approaches of detecting an exact acquisition time that require much hardware resource, the proposed technique is to detect the target symbol by finding the symbol acquisition interval per symbol with a target symbo, thus the complexity of the complete signal processing and power consumption by ADC are reduced. To do this, we define the bit decision window (BDW) and analyze the relation between SNR, hardware resource, size of BDW and BER(Bit Error Rate). Using the results, the optimum BDW size for the minimum BER with limited hardware resource is selected. The proposed synchronization technique is verified with an aid of a simulator programmed by considering practical impulse channels.

This paper proposes a selective-weighted energy detection (S-WED) and a synchronization algorithm appropriate for it in IR-UWB system. Energy detectors that are practical in terms of implementation are employed widely for noncoherent reception in IR-UWB systems. However, they show low performance due to using the energy samples captured at symbol rate. For this reason, weighted energy detectors are developed to improve the performance of EDs. Hence, for WED, not only synchronization but also the weight coefficients are needed to be obtained prior to data detection. Meanwhile, the optimal weighting coefficients of WEDs are known to be energy values. Therefore, synchronization and the weighting coefficients can be obtained simultaneously. This paper proposes an S-WED and a simple synchronization algorithm for it in which sub-intervals having energies under a certain level are excluded in energy accumulation resulting in a simpler WED with a bit performance increase in low SNR region. The proposed algorithm is verified through simulations using the preamble symbol and channel models defined in the IEEE 802.15.4a.

In this paper, we propose two novel detection schemes with low-complexity based on the unified receiver architecture which minimizes a fundamental tradeoff at rate-energy region in SWIPT system. The proposed detection schemes are twofold: The two-stage detection scheme and Euclidean distance combination detection scheme. The two-stage detection scheme detects amplitude information of symbols from rectified signals for energy harvesting. In the sequel, it detects symbols based on phase information of baseband signals for information decoding. The Euclidean distance combination detection scheme detects symbols using linear positive-weighted sum of two metrics: Euclidean distance based on baseband signals for information decoding and Euclidean distance based on rectified signals for energy harvesting. For numerical results, we confirm that the proposed detection scheme can achieve better performance than the conventional scheme in terms of symbol error rate, symbol success rate-energy region and achievable rate-energy region.

In the noncoherent methods for UWB-IR (ultra-wideband impulse radio), block coded modulation (BCM) is better than the transmitted reference (TR) systems in terms of the energy efficiency and data rate. However, even BCM suffers from the performance degradation in the presence of strong inter-frame interference and inter symbol interference. We propose the transmitted reference based on the BCM (TR-BCM) which is the hybrid system of TR and BCM. Performance evaluation shows that the performance of TR-BCM is better than that of BCM in the high SNR range.

In this paper we propose the Digital Automatic Gain Controller for IEEE 802.11a-High-speed Physical Layer in the 5 GHz Band. The input gain it estimated by calculating the energy of the training symbol that it a synchronizing signal. The renewal gain is calculated by comparing the estimated gain with the ideal gain. The renewal gain is converted into the controlled voltage for GCA to reduce or amplify the input signals. We used a piecewise-linear approximation to reduce the hardware size. The gain control is performed seven times to provide more accurate gain control. The proposed automatic gain controller is designed with VHDL and verified by using the Xilinx FPGA.
