Evaluation of Sweet Potato Cultivars for High Yield and Optimum Processing in Jeonbuk Region (전북지역 적응 다수성 가공용 고구마 적품종 선발)

  • This work was conducted to identify sweet potato [(Ipomoea batatas (L.) Lam.)] cultivars showing high yield and processing suitability in the Jeonbuk region of Korea. Shoot-slips (30 cm in length) of 14 cultivars were planted with a planting density of $75{\times}25cm$ on May 30, and cultivated with black film mulching. Vine elongation at 30 days after planting was significantly increased (> 90 cm) in 'Dahomi' and 'Sinhwangmi', and was excellent (> 250 cm) 120 days after planting in 'Sinhwangmi', 'Shinyulmi', 'Daeyumi', 'Jinhongmi', and 'Yeonhwangmi'. The branch number per plant showed a dramatic increase in 'Shinzami' 30 and 120 days after planting. The leaf number per plant showed the highest increase in 'Shinzami' 30 days and in 'Sinhwangmi' 120 days after planting. Total weight, mean weight, and number of marketable tubers per plant were significantly higher 150 days after planting than that 120 days after planting. Marketable tuber yield at 120 days was high, over 2.5 ton/10a in 'Daeyumi', 'Dahomi', and 'Jeonmi', and was considerably increased, from 3.2 ton/10a to 3.5 ton/10a, 150 days after planting. Total weight of marketable tubers per plant and marketable tuber yield 120 and 150 days after planting had significant positive correlations with vine length and number of nodes 30 days after planting. Starch value was significantly higher 150 days after planting than that 120 days after planting. 'Daeyumi' and 'Jeonmi' had good growth vigor, high yield, and high starch content; 'Dahomi' also exhibited beneficial traits such as good growth vigor, high yield, and bright orange-colored flesh.

Proteome analysis of storage roots of two sweet potato cultivars with contrasting low temperature tolerance during storage (저온 저장 감수성 및 저항성 고구마 품종에서 저온 반응성 단백질체 연구)

  • To obtain information on the molecular mechanism underlying the low temperature tolerance of sweet potato [Ipomoea batatas (L.) Lam], the proteome expressed in the sweet potato cultivar Xushu 15-1 with high cold storage tolerance and in the cultivar Xushu 15-4 with low cold storage tolerance was analyzed using 2-D and MALDI-TOF/TOF analyses. Compared with the control (without cold treatment), four protein spots were newly expressed in Xushu 15-1. The expression level of one protein spot was higher in Xushu 15-4 than in Xushu 15-1. Spot 2, which was newly expressed in Xushu 15-1, was identified as sporamin. Assessment of the change in protein expression levels over 8 weeks in the storage roots of the two cultivars treated at 4℃ revealed no significant difference in the expression levels in Xushu 15-1 over time. However, in Xushu 15-4, the expression level of one protein spot increased, while those of four spots decreased. Of the proteins with reduced expression levels, spots 7 and 8 were identified as actin and spots 9 and 10 were identified as fructokinase-like proteins. The present results are expected to enhance the understanding of the complex mechanism underlying the low temperature tolerance of sweet potatoes during storage and can be used to identify candidate genes for the development of new varieties of sweet potatoes with improved low temperature tolerance during cold storage in the future.

Effect of Virus Free Stocks of Sweetpotato Cultivated at Different Regions (지역을 달리하여 재배한 고구마 바이러스 무병묘 효과)

  • To analysis of virus free sweetpotato effect, 5 virus free sweetpotato and virus normal sweetpotato varieties were planted in 5 different regions at 2010 year. The average yields of virus free sweetpotato are showed different results according to regions. Sinjami which cultivated at Iksan were increased maximum 68% compare to normal. However, Sinjami which cultivated in Hamyang were decreased yield 11% compare to normal. Analysis of tuber formation ratio of Sinjami, Yenhwangmi, Singeonmi which cultivated in Nonsan were decreased tuber number compare to normal. However, 3 varieties were all increased on Average storage root weight and yield of marketable storage root. In the results of analysis of marketable storage root according to cultivated regions and varieties, all varieties except Sinjami which cultivated in Hamyang were increased yield. Also, quality of virus free sweetpotato were enhanced 7 to 9 compare to virus infected sweet potato which showing average 3. Contents of starch between virus free and virus infected sweetpotato were not affected by virus. Virus free sweetpotato were more increased starch products according to increased total production yield. Also, $Brix^{\circ}$(%) was not showing difference between virus free and virus infected sweetpotatoes. In this experiment, Virus free sweetpotato are enhanced production yields and quality. Therefore, we suggested that virus free sweetpotato is one of the methods to reduce damage by sweetpotato virus.
