A two-layer fluid with free surface is simulated in the time domain by a two-dimensional potential-based Numerical Wave Tank (NWT). The developed NWT is based on the boundary element method and a leap-frog time integration scheme. A whole domain scheme including interaction terms between two layers is applied to solve the boundary integral equation. The time histories of surface elevations on both fluid layers in the respective wave modes are verified with analytic results. The amplitude ratios of upper to lower elevation for various density ratios and water depths are also compared.

This paper is concerned with an numerical analysis of electromagnetic wave propagation from randomly rough surfaces as a desert, sea surface and so on. We propose discrete ray tracing method (DRTM) for analysis of characteristics of wave propagation along one dimensional (1D) and two dimensional (2D) random rough surfaces. The point of the present method is to discretize not only rough surface but also ray tracing. This technique helps saving computer memories and does simplifying ray searching algorithm resulting in saving computation time. Numerical calculations are carried out for 1D and 2D random rough surfaces and electric field distributions are shown to check the effectiveness of the proposed DRTM.
The Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) data are considered to contain the greatest amount of information among various microwave techniques developed for measuring ocean variables from aircraft or satellites. They have the potential of measuring wavelength, wave direction and wave height of the ocean waves. But, it is difficult to retrieve significant ocean wave heights and surface current from conventional SAR data, since the imaging mechanism of ocean waves by a SAR is determined by the three basic modulation processes arise through the tilt modulation, hydrodynamic modulation and velocity bunching which are poorly known functions. Along-Track Interferometric (ATI) SAR systems can directly detect the Doppler shift associated with each pixel of a SAR image and have been used to estimate wave fields and surface currents. However, the Doppler shift is not simply proportional to the component of the mean surface current. It includes also contributions associated with the phase velocity of the Brags waves and orbital motions of all ocean waves that are longer than Brags waves. In this paper, we have developed a new method for extracting the surface current vector using multiple-frequency (L- & C-band) ATI SAR data, and have generated surface wave height information.
Formulation of the far-field method for the prediction of time-mean hydrodynamic force and moment acting on a 3-D surface-piercing body in waves is reviewed. It is found that the inequality between the weight of the floating body and its buoyancy force permits the replacement of the fluid particles inside the control surface by the fluid particles outside the control surface. Under such circumstances, momentum exchanges across the control surface make the time-mean value of the time rate of the momentum of the fluid inside the control surface non-vanishing. It is a second-order quantity which is hard to calculate by the far-field method. The drift forces and moments on half-immersed ellipsoids are calculated by both the far-field method and the near-field method. The discrepancy between two numerical results is presented and discussed.

Numerical simulations have been carried out for a 138K LNG Carrier (KLNG) model ship with free surface, using WAVIS 2.0 and Fluent 6.3.26 with various $y^+$ values and different grid densities. Level-set method for free surface capturing was adopted in WAVIS, while VOF has been used in Fluent. The calculated results were compared with the experiment data. Resistance coefficient, wave pattern, wave profile along the hull surface, axial velocity contours and transverse vectors had been analyzed. When the first $y^+$ value was fixed at 60, the simulation results from both WAVIS and Fluent were improved as the number of grids increased. The convergence time of WAVIS was much shorter than that of Fluent. Furthermore, WAVIS predicted the velocity field and the wave profile along the hull surface better than Fluent. However, Fluent gave better wave patterns.

In this study, a new numerical procedure for the generation of a nonlinear tailored group of waves is presented. The procedure is based on the transient wave group technique. In order to integrate the nonlinearity during the wave propagation in the computational method, the Navier-Stokes equations are applied as governing equations. The governing equations are discretized by finite volume approximation. The deformation of the free water surface in each time step is pursued with a moving grid. A two-dimensional, numerical wave tank for the simulation of the wave propagation is developed and tested in detail. The numeric results are compared first with analytical wave theories and with measurements, in order to examine the correctness of the numerical wave tank. Wave surface elevation and associated fields of velocity and pressure are numerically computed and compared with measurements. Very good agreements show up.

Nonlinear aeroelastic characteristics of a missile control surface are investigated in this study. The wing model has freeplay structural nonlinearity at its pitch axis. Nonlinear aerodynamic flows with unsteady shock waves are also considered in high-speed flow region. To effectively consider a freeplay structural nonlinearity, the fictitious mass method (FMM) is applied to structural vibration analysis based on finite element method (FEM). (omitted)
Rayleigh wave and Love wave are the major elastic waves belonging to the category of the surface wave. The fact that Love wave is not contaminated by P-wave makes Love wave superior to Rayleish wave and other body waves. Therefore, the information that Love wave carries is more distinct and clearer than the information of Rayleigh wave. In this study, for the purpose of employing Love wave in the SASW method, the dispersion characteristics of the Love wave were extensively investigated by the theoretical, numerical and experimental approaches. The 2-D and 3-D finite element analyses for the half space and two-layer systems were performed to determine the phase velocities from Love wave as well as from both the vertical and the horizontal components of Rayleigh wave. Also, the SASW measurements were performed at the geotechnical sites to verify the results obtained by the numerical analysis. The results of the numerical analysis and the field testing indicated that the dispersion characteristics of Love wave can be an extended information to make better evaluation of the subsurface stiffness structure by SASW method.

The non-destructive Inspection of the fillet weldment has difficulties due to its geometrical complexity and uneasy access. The surface shear horizontal wave (SH-wave), however, has been successfully applied to the detection of cracks on the surface and sub-surface of the filet weldment heel part. The conventional ultrasonic inspection using the surface SH-wave is usually a contact method using piezoelectric transducer. Thus, it is not suitable for a field application because the reliability and repeatability of inspection are significantly affected by test conditions such as couplant, contact pressure and pre-process. In order to overcome this problem, a non-contact SH-wave inspection method using EMAT is propose. The experimental results with this non-contact method are compared with those with a conventional ultrasonic method in fillet weldment with slit type defects. It is shown that the non-contact inspection technique requires simple procedure and less time in the fillet weldment inspection.
A time domain finite element based method is employed to analyze wave radiation by multiple cylinders. The nonlinear free surface and body surface boundary conditions are satisfied based on the perturbation method up to the second order. The first- and second-order velocity potential problems at each time step are solved through a finite element method (FEM). The matrix equation of the FEM is solved through an iteration and the initial solution is obtained from the result at the previous time step. The three-dimensional (3D) mesh required is generated based on a two-dimensional (2D) hybrid mesh on a horizontal plane and its extension in the vertical direction. The hybrid mesh is generated by combining an unstructured grid away from cylinders and two structured grids near the cylinder and the artificial boundary, respectively. The fluid velocity on the free surface and the cylinder surface are calculated by using a differential method. Results for various configurations including two-cylinder and four-cylinder cases are provided to show the mutual influence due to cylinders on the first and second waves and forces.
