  • Lubricant-based nanofluids were prepared by dispersing carbon nanoparticles in gear oil. In this study, the effects of the particle size, shape and dispersity of the particles on the tribological properties of nanofluids were investigated. Dispersion experiments were conducted with a high-speed bead mill and an ultrasonic homogenizer, and the surfaces of the nanoparticles were simultaneously modified with several dispersants. The effective thermal conductivity of the nanofluids was measured by the transient hot-wire method, and the tribological behaviors of the nanofluids were also investigated with a disk-on-disk tribo-tester. The results of this study clearly showed that the combination of the nanoparticles, the deagglomeration process, the dispersant and the dispersion solvent is very important for the dispersity and tribological properties of nanofluids. Lubricant-based nanofluids showed relatively low thermal conductivity enhancement, but they were highly effective in decreasing the frictional heat that was generated. For nanofluids containing 0.1vol.% graphite particles in an oil lubricant, The friction coefficient in the boundary and fluid lubrication range was reduced to approximately 70% of the original value of pure lubricant.

  • In this study, the physically-based failure models for matrix and fibers in compression and tension loading are introduced. For the 3D stress based fiber kinking model a modification is proposed for calculation of the fiber misalignment angle. All of these models are implemented into the finite element code by using the advantage of damage variable and the numerical results are discussed. To investigate the matrix failure model, purely in-plane transverse compression experiments are carried out on the specimens made by Glass/Epoxy to obtain the fracture surface angle and then a comparison is made with the calculated numerical results. Furthermore, shear failure of $({\pm}45)_s$ model is investigated and the obtained numerical results are discussed and compared with available experimental results. Some experiments are also carried out on the woven laminated composites to investigate the fracture pattern in the matrix failure mode and shown that the presented matrix failure model can be used for the woven composites. Finally, the obtained numerical results for stress based fiber kinking model and improved ones (strain based model) are discussed and compared with each other and with the available results. The results show that these models can predict the kink band angle approximately.

  • For enhancing the gene delivery efficiency of polyplexes, a new formulation was developed using PEI conjugated Pluronic F127 copolymer as an effective additive. Low molecular weight, branched polyethylenimine Mw 600 (LMW BPEI 600) was conjugated to the terminal end of Pluronic F127. The PEI-modified Pluronic copolymers formed a micellar structure in aqueous solution, similar to that of unmodified Pluronic copolymer. PEI modification of Pluronic copolymer increased the size of micelles while concomitantly raising the critical micelle concentration (CMC). The PEI-modified Pluronic copolymer was used as a micellar additive to enhance the gene transfection efficiency of pre-formulated polyelectrolyte complex nanoparticles composed of luciferase plasmid DNA and branched PEI Mw 25k (BPEI 25k) or polylysine Mw 39k (PLL 39k). The luciferase gene expression levels were significantly enhanced by the addition of the BPEI-modified Pluronic copolymer for the two formulations of BPEl and PLL polyplexes. The results indicated that the BPEI-modified Pluronic copolymer micelles ionically interacted on the surface of DNA/BPEI (PLL) polyplexes which might facilitate cellular uptake process.

  • Reduced graphene oxide (rGO) nanosheets were patterned with poly[benzodithiophene-bis(decyltetradecyl-thien) naphthothiadiazole] (PBDT-DTNT) and poly[bis(triiso-propylsilylethynyl) benzodithiophene-bis(decyltetradecyl-thien) naphthobisthiadiazole] (PBDT-TIPS-DTNT-DT) and used in photovoltaics. Conductive patternings changed via surface modification of rGO; because polymers encountered a high hindrance while assembling onto grafted rGO. The best records were detected in indium tin oxide (ITO):poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS):PBDTDTNT/rGO:PBDT-DTNT:LiF:Al devices, i.e., short current density $(J_{sc})=11.18mA/cm^2$, open circuit voltage $(V_{oc})=0.67V$, fill factor (FF) = 62% and power conversion efficiency (PCE) = 4.64%. PCE increased 2.31 folds after incorporation of PBDT-DTNT into thin films. Larger polymer assemblies on bared-rGO nanosheets resulted in greater phase separations.

  • Polyimide (PI) surface modification was carried out by ion-beam treatment and silane-imidazole coupling agent to improve the adhesion between polyimide film and copper. Silane-imidazole coupling agent contains imidazole functional groups for the formation of a complex with copper metal through a coordination bonding and methoxy silane groups for the formation of siloxane polymers. The PI film surface was first treated by argon (Ar)/oxygen ($O_2$) ion-beam, followed by dipping it into a modified silane-imidazole coupling agent solution. The results of X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) spectra revealed that the $Ar/O_2$ plasma treatment formed oxygen functional groups such as hydroxyl and carbonyl groups on the polyimide film surface and confirmed that the PI surface was modified by a coupling reaction with imidazole-silane coupling agent. Adhesion between copper and the treated PI film by ion-beam and coupling agent was superior to that with untreated PI film. In addition, adhesion of PI film treated by an $Ar/O_2$ plasma to copper was better than that of PI film treated by a coupling agent. The peeled-off layers from the copper-PI film joint were completely different in chemical composition each other. The layer of PI film side showed similar C1s, N1s, O1s spectra to the original Upilex-S and no Si and Cu atoms appeared. On the other hand the layer of copper side showed different C1s and N1s spectra from the original PI film and many Si and Cu atoms appeared. This indicates that the failure occurs at an interface between the imidazole-silane and PI film layers rather than within the PI layers.

  • Merocyanine derivatives transformed from spiropyran-containing compounds by irradiating the light of ultraviolet (UV) include zwitterion of phenolate anion and amine cation. Complexation of this phenolate anion on merocyaninemodified surface and Ni ion among metal ions led to a change of surface charge and it was measured with kelvin prove force microscopy (KFM). We found that the resultant surface potential decreased linearly as UV-exposed time increased, and finally were saturated. Also it was analyzed through XPS the immobilized amount of Ni ions was increased according to increase of UV-exposed time. It is considered that these properties could be applied for detection and a quantitative control of different metal ions. Further research is to aim construct specific scaffold/matrix which enable high selective, high sensitive and, especially, a quantitative immobilization of metal ions-binding biomaterials such as proteins and cells.

  • This paper was to study the effect to Yongrak phenomenon of I groove submerged arc welding depending on the plasma cutting surface characteristics, and how to reduce the causes and characteristics Yongrak phenomenon. Shipbuilding and marine structures is designed to use the thick plates and welded by high current to obtain deep penetration. Yongrak phenomenon has been occurred frequently depending on the quality of cutting surface and it makes degrade of the welding quality and modification of the welding. As a result, it was confirmed that I Groove plasma cutting characteristics get bevel form of 2 to 4 degrees to one side direction from the vertical position with Yongrak phenomenon. This is the main reason of Yongrak phenomenon in butt joint welding and 4 degree reverse bevel on the upper surface of base metal by submerged arc welding brought the effect of significant reduction of Yongrak phenomenon.

  • It has been reported that the surface properties of the plasma treated material were changed while maintaining its bulk properties. In this study, surface modification of nylon fiber by plasma treatment was tried to attain high water-repellency Nylon fiber was treated with RF plasma under a vacuum system using various parameters such as gas specious, processing time and processing power. Morphological changes by low pressure plasma treatment were observed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM). Moreover, the mechanical and inherent properties were analyzed by tensile strength, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The high water-repellency property of nylon fiber was evaluated by a water-drop standard test under various conditions in terms of aging effect. The results showed that the water-repellency of plasma-surface-treated nylon fiber was greatly improved compared to untreated nylon fiber.

  • In this study, zinc oxide (ZnO) nano powder, well known as an UV absorbing material, was synthesized with three synthetic conditions by the hydrothermal method. After ZnO nano powder was surface-modified with various silane coupling agents to improve dispersion property, a dispersion sol was prepared with dispersant for 72 h by the ball-milling of surface-modified ZnO nano powder. The dispersion sol, prepared by modifying the surface of the ZnO nano powder with an average size of about 30 nm using 3-chloropropyl trimethoxy silane, showed an excellent dispersion stability with a high UV-shielding and visible trnasparency.

  • SnO2-based high-capacity anode materials are attractive candidate for the next-generation high-performance lithium-ion batteries since the theoretical capacity of SnO2 can be ideally extended from 781 to 1494 mAh g-1. Here 3D etched Cu foam is applied as a current collector for electron path and simultaneously a substrate for the SnO2 coating, for developing an integrated electrode structure. We fabricate the 3D etched Cu foam through an auto-catalytic electroless plating method, and then coat the SnO2 onto the self-supporting substrate through a simple sol-gel method. The catalytic dissolution of Cu metal makes secondary pores of both several micrometers and several tens of micrometers at the surface of Cu foam strut, besides main channel-like interconnected pores. Especially, the additional surface pores on etched Cu foam are intended for penetrating the individual strut of Cu foam, and thereby increasing the surface area for SnO2 coating by using even the internal of Cu foam. The increased areal capacity with high structural integrity upon cycling is demonstrated in the SnO2-coated 3D etched Cu foam. This study not only prepares the etched Cu foam using the spontaneous chemical reactions but also demonstrates the potential for electroless plating method about surface modification on various metal substrates.
