  • Studies were performed on preparation of organic-inorganic hybrid silica dye in a dispersing ink system. The silica was subjected to surface modification using 3-aminopropyltrimethoxysilane (APTMS) in order to promote the chemical reactivity of the raw silica. On the surfaces of the aminosilane-functionalised silica, red vinylsulfone-containing azo dye was adsorbed. The dye was found to have chemically reacted with the aminosilane-grafted silica surface, which was proven by FT-IR spectra. Studies on morphology and microstructure were performed employing scanning electron microscopy. The SEM micrographs and particle size distributions showed that a homogeneous pigment can be obtained employing silica as a core. Particle size distribution was also examined using the technique of dynamic light scattering. The ensuing pigment was subjected to various physicochemical evaluation such as inkjet property, storage stability, color change as inkjet ink using printer, spectrophotometric, microscopic techniques. Studies on hybrid dyes from the silica surface demonstrated that, in general, stable pigments for inkjet dispersion ink were obtained.

  • The interaction between commercial $Si_3N_4$ powder and two types of additives (nitrate and oxide additives) during the sintering of $Si_3N_4$ was investigated. The nitrates solution or oxide particles were added as a sintering additives. The surface of mixed powder was observed with FT-IR, TG, and HREM. DTA was used to characterize the reactivity of the powders. The formation of crystalline phases and phase transformation were analyzed by XRD. The adsorption of the additives on the surface of silicon nitride was confirmed in the nitrate salts. It was shown that the adsorption occurred by interaction between the amorphous $SiO_2$ layer on the $Si_3N_4$ surface and metal cations $(Al^{3++\; and \;Y^{3+})$ and anions $(NO_3\;^-\; or\; OH^-)$, resulting in a higher degree of homogeneous distribution of additives.

  • In this study, new morphology of NCA cathode material for lithium ion batteries was obtained through the electrospinning method. The prepared NCA nanofibers formed a nano-bush structure, and the primary particles were formed on the surface of the nanofibers. The embossing primary particles increased the surface area thus increasing the reactivity of lithium ions. The nano-bush structure could shorten the Li+ diffusion path and improve the Li+ diffusion coefficient. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) revealed that the synthesized material consisted of nanofibers. The surface area of the nanofibers increased by primary particles was measured using atomic force microscopy (AFM). X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis was carried out to determine the structure of the NCA nanofibers.

  • Coal modified by acid treatment was investigated to analyze the correlation between the cell performance and electrochemical parameters in a direct carbon fuel cell (DCFC). The fuels were subjected to thermogravimetry analysis, gas adsorption test, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy to investigate the fuel properties and surface characteristics. After the treatment of raw coal, the thermal reactivity of the treated fuels increased, and the specific surface area decreased, though the mean pore diameters of three fuels were similar. The coal treated by $HNO_3$ showed the highest ratio of oxygen to carbon, and also an increase in the surface oxygen groups on the fuel surface. Through comparison between the fuel surface properties and electrochemical performance, it was confirmed that the surface oxygen groups have an influence on the improvement in the DCFC performance.

  • Statement of problem: Recently precalcification treatment has been studied to shorten the period of the implant. Purpose: This study was performed to evaluate the effect of precalcification treatment of $TiO_2$ Nanotube formed on Ti-6Al-4V Alloy. Material and methods: Specimens of $20{\times}10{\times}2\;mm$ in dimensions were polished sequentially from #220 to #1000 SiC paper, ultrasonically washed with acetone and distilled water for 5 min, and dried in an oven at $50^{\circ}C$ for 24 hours. The nanotubular layer was processed by electrochemical anodic oxidation in electrolytes containing 0.5 M $Na_2SO_4$ and 1.0 wt% NaF. Anodization was carried out using a regulated DC power supply (Kwangduck FA, Korea) at a potential of 20 V and current density of $30\;㎃/cm_2$ for 2 hours. Specimens were heat-treated at $600^{\circ}C$ for 2 hours to crystallize the amorphous $TiO_2$ nanotubes, and precalcified by soaking in $Na_2HPO_4$ solution for 24 hours and then in saturated $Ca(OH)_2$ solution for 5 hours. To evaluate the bioactivity of the precalcified $TiO_2$ nanotube layer, hydroxyapatite formation was investigated in a Hanks' balanced salts solution with pH 7.4 at $36.5^{\circ}C$ for 2 weeks. Results: Vertically oriented amorphous $TiO_2$ nanotubes of diameters 48.0 - 65.0 ㎚ were fabricated by anodizing treatment at 20 V for 2 hours in an 0.5 M $Na_2SO_4$ and 1.0 NaF solution. $TiO_2$ nanotubes were composed with strong anatase peak with presence of rutile peak after heat treatment at $600^{\circ}C$. The surface reactivity of $TiO_2$ nanotubes in SBF solution was enhanced by precalcification treatment in 0.5 M $Na_2HPO_4$ solution for 24 hours and then in saturated $Ca(OH)_2$ solution for 5 hours. The immersion in Hank's solution for 2 weeks showed that the intensity of $TiO_2$ rutile peak increased but the surface reactivity decreased by heat treatment at $600^{\circ}C$. Conclusion: This study shows that the precalcified treatment of $TiO_2$ Nanotube formed on Ti-6Al-4V Alloy enhances the surface reactivity.

  • Reactivity of Pt catalysts(0.2, 0.5 wt% Pt) supported on solid super acid, $ZrO_2$ $SO_4{^{2-}}$ for low-temperature oxidation was investigated for complete oxidation of cyclohexane. Catalytic activity measured as reactant conversion in a packed-bed tubular reactor increased in accordance with the acidity and specific surface area of the catalyst activity and specific surface area of $Pt/ZrO_2$ $SO_4{^{2-}}$ catalyst were diminished by adding potassium during catalyst preparation. the catalyst activity decreased in accordance with the amount of potassium added. In addition, $Pt/ZrO_2$ $SO_4{^{2-}}$ catalyst exhibited an activity greater than that of a $Pt/SiO_2$ or $Pt/Al_2O_3$ catalyst possessing much larger specific surface area at $250^{\circ}C$ for the reactant stream of 15.000 ppm cyclohexane concentration and $18,000hr^{-1}$ space velocity, a cyclohexane conversion as high as 96% was obtained over 0.2 wt% $Pt/ZrO_2$ $SO_4{^{2-}}$, whereas cyclohexane conversions over 0.2 wt% $Pt/SiO_2$ and 0.2 wt% $Pt/Al_2O_3$ were 83 and 79%, respectively.

  • The combustion reactivity of char depending on the pyrolysis pressure was investigated with Pressurized Thermogravimetric Analyser. The amounts of volatiles released at pyrolysis pressure of 1, 8 and 15 atm were, first, measured with Alaska, Adaro and Denisovsky coals. Reactivities of chars produced at var-ious pyrolysis pressure were evaluated at atmospheric pressure and 500℃, and analysed in terms of char crystal structure, surface area, pore characteristics and chemical composition of char. Finally, the combustion reactivities of three chars were examined at pressure of 1 atm, 8 atm and 15 atm. From this study, it was recognized that the amount of volatiles released decreases with increase in pyrolysis pressure, and reaction rate of char produced at higher pyrolysis pressure was lower than that at lower pyrolysis pressure. It might be resulted from the difference in char surface area and pore characteristics rather than char crystal structure and chemical characteristics. At 15 atm, kinetic parameters of Alaska char were obtained with the grain model, and these were 56.8 KJ/mole for activation energy and 222.34 (1/min) for frequency factor.

  • In $N_{x}$ films were deposited on soda-lime glass without substrate heating by reactive dc magnetron sputtering using indium (In) metal target. Depositions were carried out under various total gas pressures ( $P_{tot}$) of mixture gases (Ar+$N_2$ or He+$N_2$). He gas was introduced to $N_2$ gas in order to enhance the reactivity of nitrogen on film surface by the "penning ionization". Plasma impedance decreased greatly when 20% or more introduced the $N_2$ gas. This is due to the In $N_{x}$ layers formed on target surface because a secondary electron emission rate of InN is small compared with In metal. XRD patterns of the films revealed that <001> preferred oriented polycrystalline In $N_{x}$ films, where the crystallinity of the films was improved with decrease of $P_{tot}$ and with increase of $N_2$ flow ratio. The improvement of the crystallinity and stoichimetry of the In $N_{x}$ films were considered to be caused by an increase in the activated nitrogen radicals and also by an increase in the kinetic energy of sputtered In atoms arriving at growing film surface, which should enhance the chemical reaction and surface migration on the growing film surface, respectively. Furthermore, the films deposited using mixture gases of He+$N_2$ showed higher crystallinity compared with the film deposited by the mixture gases of Ar+$N_2$.$.EX>.

  • In addition to the catalysts' activity and selectivity, the deactivation of catalysts during use is of practical importance. It is crucial to understand the phenomena of the deactivation to predict the loss of activity during catalyst usage so that the high operational costs associated with catalyst replacement can be reduced. In this study, the activity of Ru catalysts, such as nanoparticles (3~6 nm) and polycrystalline thin film (50 nm), have been investigated under CO oxidation and oxidative/reductive reaction conditions at various temperatures with the ambient pressure X-Ray photoelectron spectroscopy (APXPS). With APXPS, the surface oxides on the catalyst are measured and monitored in-situ. It was found that the Ru film exhibited faster oxidation-and-reduction compared to that of nanoparticles showing mild oxidative-and-reductive characteristics. Additionally, the larger Ru nanoparticles showed a higher degree of oxide formation at all temperatures, suggesting a higher stability of the oxide. These observations are in agreement with the catalytic activity of Ru catalysts. The loss of activity of Ru films is correlated with bulk oxide formation, which is inactive in CO oxidation. The Ru nanoparticle, however, does not exhibit deactivation under similar conditions, suggesting that its surface is covered with a highly active ultrathin surface oxide. Since the active oxide is more stable as nanoparticles than as a film, the nanoparticles showed mild oxidative/reductive behavior, as confirmed by APXPS results. We believe these simultaneous observations of both the surface oxide of Ru catalysts and the reactivity in real time enable us to pinpoint the deactivation phenomena more precisely and help in designing more efficient and stable catalytic systems.

  • $CO_2$ adsorption on mineral sorbents has a potential to sequester $CO_2$. This study used a density functional theory (DFT) study of $CO_2$ adsorption on barium oxide (BaO) in the presence of $H_2O$ to determine the role of $H_2O$ on the $CO_2$ adsorption properties on the ($2{\times}2$; $11.05\;{\AA}{\times}11.05\;{\AA}$) BaO (100) surface because BaO shows a high reactivity for $CO_2$ adsorption and the gas mixture of power plants generally contains $CO_2$ and $H_2O$. We investigated the adsorption properties (e.g., adsorption energies and geometries) of a single $CO_2$ molecule, a single $H_2O$ molecule on the surface to achieve molecular structures and molecular reaction mechanisms. In order to evaluate the coordinative effect of $H_2O$ molecules, this study also carried out the adsorption of a pair of $H_2O$ molecules, which was strongly bounded to neighboring (-1.91 eV) oxygen sites and distant sites (-1.86 eV), and two molecules ($CO_2$ and $H_2O$), which were also firmly bounded to neighboring sites (-2.32 eV) and distant sites (-2.23 eV). The quantum mechanical calculations show that $H_2O$ molecule does not influence on the chemisorption of $CO_2$ on the BaO surface, producing a stable carbonate due to the strong interaction between the $CO_2$ molecule and the BaO surface, resulting from the high charge transfer (-0.76 e).
