This paper describes the friction surface modification which has been successfully developed with the friction stir welding recently There are several problems including just position control and backlash in conventional friction surface modification system. Therefore it has been developed the friction surface modification system which has been controlled precisely both position and force by driving hydraulic cylinder in this paper. The mechtrode rotation speed(N) and feeding speed(Vz), travel speed(Vx,y) are of critical importance for the width and thickness of the coating in friction surfacing process. But there is no theoretical method of determining interrelations between process parameters affect the coating width and thickness. As a result of DOE(design of experiment) with developed system, the coating thickness and width seemed to decrease according to increase the mechtrode rotation speed(N) and traveling speed(Vx,y), to decrease feeding speed(Vz) apparently. However as the result of regression analysis the main effect was only the mechtrode rotation speed in the coating thickness.
In this paper, we presented the window applicable blind-type frequency selective surface to control the coverage area of wireless communication in secure building or conference room. The proposed frequency selective structure has the reconfigurable frequency range depends on its blind rotation angle. To verify the proposed structure, we fabricated the window blind-type frequency selective surface with four-legged loaded element and ring-type element as a unit cell and performed measurements of the transmission characteristics for different blind rotation angles to prove the feasibility. The measurement results show good agreements with the simulation results. One of the advantages is that the proposed structure does not need to have a bias circuit, so it is very easy to implement at low cost and also can be applied to any planar surface for wireless security applications.
Inherent dynamic interaction between flexible disk and workpiece creates partially non-flat surface profile. A flat zone was defined using minimum depth of engagement. Several key parameters were defined to explain the characteristics of the zone. Process conditions including disk rotation speed, initial depth of cut and feed speed were varied to produce product profile database. Correlation between key factors was examined to find the characteristic dependencies. Trends of key parameters were displayed and explained. Higher flat zone ratio was observed for lower depth of cut and higher disk rotation speed. Ratio of minimum depth of cut against target depth of cut increased for higher feed speed and disk rotation speed but was insensitive to the depth of cut variation. The process transition was visualized by continuously displaying instantaneous orientation of the deflected disk and the location of key parameters were clearly marked for comparison.
High speed machining is a machining process which cuts materials with the fast movement and rotation of a spindle in a machine tool. It reduces machining time because of the high feed and the high speed of a spindle. In addition it gets rid of post processes for high precision machining. When the high speed machining is applied to especially hardened steel, operators should select the proper parameters of machining. This can produce machining surfaces which is qualified with good surface roughness. This paper presents a method for selecting machining parameters to minimize surface roughness with high speed machining in cutting the hardened steels. Experimental data for surface roughness are collected in a machining shop based on the cutting feed and the spindle rotation. The data fits in hi-cubic polynomial surface of mathematical form. From the model this research minimize the surface roughness to find the optimal values of the feed and the spindle speed. This paper presents a program which automatically generates optimal solutions from the raw data of experiments.
Purpose: Although some studies indicate that the Sorensen test may not be used to examine back muscles such as the erector spinae, alternatives to the back-extension test are rarely suggested. Therefore, the purpose of the present study was to investigate an effective way to stimulate the erector spinae muscles by adding a component of trunk rotation and lateral bending to general back extensions. Methods: A total of 18 healthy, physically active participants performed simple trunk extension, extension with trunk rotation, and extension with lateral bending. Surface electromyography responses of the latissimus dorsi, thoracic, and lumbar levels of the erector spinae; the gluteus maximus; and the biceps femoris muscles were investigated during these 3 conditions of modified back extension tests. Results: The simple trunk extension exercise caused significant increases in activity of the gluteus maximus and biceps femoris muscles as compared to the extension with rotation and lateral bending exercises. The extension with trunk rotation exercise showed significantly greater activation in the thoracic and lumbar levels of the erector spinae and in the latissimus dorsi as compared to the other exercises. The index measuring subjective difficulty was significantly lower in the simple trunk extension exercise as compared to the extension with trunk rotation and extension with lateral bending exercises. Conclusion: The present study suggests that extension with trunk rotation has the advantage of stimulating the para-spinal muscles, while simple trunk extension may not be adequate to selectively simulate the para-spinal muscles but may be appropriate for examining global trunk extensors.
When an almost flat surface under test is measured by an interferometer, the measurement result is largely influenced by systematic errors that include geometrical errors of a reference flat surface. To determine the systematic errors of the interferometer by the conventional method that is called the three flat method, we must take the reference flat surface out from the interferometer and measure it. Because of difficulties to set the reference flat surface to the interferometer exactly and quickly, this method is not practical. On the other hand, the method that measures a surface under test with some shifts in the direction being perpendicular to the optical axis of the interferometer is studied. However, the parasitic pitching, rolling and up-down movement caused by the above shifts brings serious error to the measurement result, and the algorithm by which the influences can be eliminated is not still established. In this paper, we propose the self-calibration algorithm for determining the systematic errors that include geometrical errors of a reference flat surface by several rotation shifts and a linear shift of general surface under test, and verify by a numerical experiment that this algorithm is useful for determining the systematic errors.
The present study investigates heat/mass transfer and flow characteristics in a ribbed rotating passage with turning region. The duct has an aspect ratio (W/H) of 0.5 and a hydraulic diameter ($D_h$) of 26.67 mm. Rib turbulators are attached in the parallel arrangement on the leading and trailing surfaces of the passage. The ribs have a rectangular cross section of 2 m (e) $\times$ 3 m (w) and an attack angle of $70^{\circ}$. The pitch-to-rib height ratio (p/e) is 7.5, and the rib height-to-hydraulic diameter ratio (e/$D_h$) is 0.075. The rotation number ranges from 0.0 to 0.20 while the Reynolds number is constant at 10,000. To verify the heat/mass transfer augmentation, internal flow structures are calculated for the same conditions using a commercial code FLUENT 6.1. The results show that a pair of vortex cells are generated due to the symmetric geometry of the rib arrangement, and heat/mass transfer is augmented up to $Sh/Sh_0=2.9$ averagely, which is higher than that of the cross-ribbed case presented in the previous study for the stationary case. With the passage rotation, the main flow in the first-pass deflects toward the trailing surface and the heat transfer is enhanced on the trailing surface. In the second-pass, the flow enlarges the vortex cell close to the leading surface, and the small vortex cell on the trailing surface side contracts to disappear as the passage rotates faster. At the highest rotation number ($R_O=0.20$), the turn-induced single vortex cell becomes identical regardless of the rib configuration so that similar local heat/mass transfer distributions are observed in the fuming region for the cross- and parallel-ribbed case.
In this study, the design and analysis of a butterfly valve disk was performed to minimize the rubbing between the disk and the seat at opening and closing. The butterfly valve has double eccentric structure and the contact surface between the disk and the seat is a conical surface. At the instant of opening and closing the valve by the rotation of disk, the positions of zero contact point are changed. Also, if the cone surface is cut in the perpendicular direction to the rotation axis of the valve, the contour of cutting section is hyperbolic. Therefore minimum distance between the origin of the eccentric axis and the hyperbolic curve goes to the position of zero contact point. In order to consider the interferences between the disk and the seat, the thermal-structure coupled field analysis was performed by ANSYS.
To figure out the effect of rotation on the final mass of Pop III stars, 1D stellar evolution simulations of the evolution of mass-accreting protostars are performed, with zero metalicity and high constant mass accretion rates. The protostar reaches the Keplerian rotation very soon after the onset of mass accretion, but it may continue mass accretion via angular momentum transport induced by viscous stress or magnetic field. However, as the accreting star evolves, the envelope expands rapidly when the total mass reaches $5{\sim}6M_{\odot}$ and the corresponding Eddington factor sharply increases. Strong radiative pressure with rotation imposes different criteria for breakup at the stellar surface, and the so-called 'critical rotation (${\Omega}{\Gamma}$-limit)' is reached. As a result mass accretion rate has to be significantly lowered. This implies that characteristic masses of Pop III stars would be significantly lowered than the previous expectation.
An optical technique to align the laser beam with the rotation axis of a cylindrical microstructure is developed for laser microfabrication. The sample surface is first set normal to the rotation axis by applying a simple reflection law of geometrical optics and then the laser beam is aligned with the rotation axis using translation stages with quadrant photodiodes. Principle and the configuration of the alignment technique are described. An application of the present technique to laser microstereolithography showed that it could be effectively used for fabrication of micro cylindrical structures.
