  • Physical, mechanical, hydraulic, and geophysical tests were applied to validate methods of inspecting the effectiveness of grouting on an agricultural reservoir dam. Data obtained from series of in situ and laboratory tests considered four stages: before grouting; during grouting; immediately after grouting; and after aging the grouting for 28 days. The results of SPT and triaxial tests, including the unit weight, compressive strength, friction angle, cohesion, and N-value, indicated the extent of ground improvement with respect to grout injection. However, they sometimes contained errors caused by ground heterogeneity. Hydraulic conductivity obtained from in situ variable head permeability testing is most suitable for identifying the effectiveness of grouting because the impermeability of the ground increased immediately after grouting. Electric resistivity surveying is useful for finding a saturated zone and a seepage pathway, and multichannel analysis of surface waves (MASW) is suitable for analyzing the effectiveness of grouting, as elastic velocity increases distinctly after grouting injection. MASW also allows calculation from the P- and S- wave velocities of dynamic properties (e.g., dynamic elastic modulus and dynamic Poisson's ratio), which can be used in the seismic design of dam structures.

  • Concrete is a representative composite material that shows excellent performance in the construction field. However, it is a brittle and nonhomogeneous material and exhibits weak behavior against bending and tensile forces. To compensate for such weakens, fiber reinforcement has been utilized, and steel fiber has been recognized as one of the best material for such purpose. However, steel fiber can seriously affect the durability of concrete exposed to the marine environment due to the corrosion caused by chlorine ions. This study intended to evaluate the mechanical performance of steel fiber reinforce concrete during and after repeated wet/dry cycles in salt solution. According to the experimental results, there was no reduction in the relative dynamic modulus of concrete during the repeated wet/dry cycles in salt solution for 37 weeks. Flexural strength was not decreased after completion of repeated wet/dry cycles in salt solution. There was no sign of corrosion in steel fibers after visual observation of fractured surface. However, the flexural toughness was decreased, and this is because about half of the concrete specimen showed failure before reaching the maximum displacement of 3 mm. Although repeated wet/dry cycles in salt solution did not cause cracks in concrete through corrosion of steel fibers, specific attention is required because it can reduce flexural toughness of steel fiber reinforced concrete.

  • The social need for stable hydrogen storage technologies that respond to the increasing demand for hydrogen energy is increasing. Among them, underground hydrogen storage is recognized as the most economical and reasonable storage method because of its vast hydrogen storage capacity. In Korea, low-depth hydrogen storage using artificial protective structures is being considered. Further, establishing corresponding safety standards and ground stability evaluation is becoming essential. This study evaluated the hydro-mechanical behavior of the ground during a hydrogen gas leak from a low-depth underground hydrogen storage facility through the HM coupled analysis model. The predictive reliability of the simulation model was verified through benchmark experiments. A parameter study was performed using a metamodel to analyze the sensitivity of factors affecting the surface uplift caused by the upward infiltration of high-pressure hydrogen gas. Accordingly, it was confirmed that the elastic modulus of the ground was the largest. The simulation results are considered to be valuable primary data for evaluating the complex analysis of hydrogen gas explosions as well as hydrogen gas leaks in the future.

  • The evaluation of shear modulus is very important in various fields of civil engineering. Non-destructive seismic methods can be used to determine shear wave velocity ($V_s$) profile. Non-destructive seismic methods geneally consist of three steps: field testing, evaluation of dispersion curve, and determination of Vs profile by inversion process. Non-destructive seismic methods can be divided into two categories according to the number of receivers used for data reduction: two-channel tests and multi-channel tests. Two channel tests use apparent velocity dispersion curve and multi-channel tests use mode dispersion curves. Multi-channel tests using mode dispersion curve can reduce calculation time to determine soil profile and uncertainties in inversion process. So far, only multi-channel tests can determine mode dispersion curves but multi-channel test needs many receivers to determine reasonable mode dispersion curves. In this paper, HWAW (Harmonic Wavelet Analysis of Wave) method is applied to determine mode dispersion curves. HWAW method uses short test setup which consists of two receivers with a spacing of 1 to 3 m. Through numerical simulations and field application, it is shown that HWAW can determine resonable mode disperson curves.

  • Elastography utilizes the fact that the tissue of a malignant tumor is harder than that of a benign tumor and increases the specificity of diagnosis according to the elastic modulus of the tumor, helping to reduce unnecessary biopsies. However, the reliability of elastography can be influenced by the equipment used and the examiner's skills. In this study, the researchers analyzed the reproducibility of elastography by evaluating phantom images when measuring the elasticity values repeatedly. Phantoms were created using silicone and gelatin with different levels of stiffness, and they were inserted at varying depths from the surface. The elasticity values were measured using shear wave elastography. The study aimed to determine whether the reproducibility of elasticity values remains consistent depending on the stiffness and depth of the lesions. The experimental results showed that there was no statistically significant correlation between the elasticity values obtained through shear wave elastography and the depth or stiffness of the lesions. However, in the lesions with the lowest stiffness, the elasticity values were statistically significant (p<0.001) and showed a high correlation with the depth of the lesions. Although there were variations in the measured elasticity values based on the differences in lesion stiffness and depth, these differences did not significantly impact the diagnosis. Therefore, shear wave elastography remains a reliable diagnostic method, and it is suggested that it can be helpful in the diagnosis of breast lesions.

  • Aerogel is a material having a nanopore structure based on a high porosity. Due to this high porosity, it has excellent properties not found in conventional materials, but its application has been limited due to low mechanical strength. Therefore, to improve the mechanical strength of the aerogel, polyurea crosslinking was introduced and a precursor having an amine group essential for polyurea polymer formation was selected to synthesize a polyurea crosslinked aerogel composite. In addition, the crosslinking of polyurea was adjusted according to the number of amine groups present in aminosilane. It was confirmed through various analyses that the nanopore structure of the aerogel was maintained to have mesopores. The aerogel thus formed was able to improve the mechanical strength by about two times, and it was confirmed through field emission scanning electron microscope analysis that a one-dimensional polymer was formed on the silica aerogel surface through the introduction of ethylene diamine. The one-dimensional polymer thus formed has improved mechanical properties, resulting in securing an elastic modulus of about 2.66 MPa.

  • Diamond-like carbon (DLC) is a convenient term to indicate the compositions of the various forms of amorphous carbon (a-C), tetrahedral amorphous carbon (ta-C), hydrogenated amorphous carbon and tetrahedral amorphous carbon (a-C:H and ta-C:H). The a-C film with disordered graphitic ordering, such as soot, chars, glassy carbon, and evaporated a-C, is shown in the lower left hand corner. If the fraction of sp3 bonding reaches a high degree, such an a-C is denoted as tetrahedral amorphous carbon (ta-C), in order to distinguish it from sp2 a-C [2]. Two hydrocarbon polymers, that is, polyethylene (CH2)n and polyacetylene (CH)n, define the limits of the triangle in the right hand corner beyond which interconnecting C-C networks do not form, and only strait-chain molecules are formed. The DLC films, i.e. a-C, ta-C, a-C:H and ta-C:H, have some extreme properties similar to diamond, such as hardness, elastic modulus and chemical inertness. These films are great advantages for many applications. One of the most important applications of the carbon-based films is the coating for magnetic hard disk recording. The second successful application is wear protective and antireflective films for IR windows. The third application is wear protection of bearings and sliding friction parts. The fourth is precision gages for the automotive industry. Recently, exciting ongoing study [1] tries to deposit a carbon-based protective film on engine parts (e.g. engine cylinders and pistons) taking into account not only low friction and wear, but also self lubricating properties. Reduction of the oil consumption is expected. Currently, for an additional application field, the carbon-based films are extensively studied as excellent candidates for biocompatible films on biomedical implants. The carbon-based films consist of carbon, hydrogen and nitrogen, which are biologically harmless as well as the main elements of human body. Some in vitro and limited in vivo studies on the biological effects of carbon-based films have been studied [$2{\sim}5$].The carbon-based films have great potentials in many fields. However, a few technological issues for carbon-based film are still needed to be studied to improve the applicability. Aisenberg and Chabot [3] firstly prepared an amorphous carbon film on substrates remained at room temperature using a beam of carbon ions produced using argon plasma. Spencer et al. [4] had subsequently developed this field. Many deposition techniques for DLC films have been developed to increase the fraction of sp3 bonding in the films. The a-C films have been prepared by a variety of deposition methods such as ion plating, DC or RF sputtering, RF or DC plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD), electron cyclotron resonance chemical vapor deposition (ECR-CVD), ion implantation, ablation, pulsed laser deposition and cathodic arc deposition, from a variety of carbon target or gaseous sources materials [5]. Sputtering is the most common deposition method for a-C film. Deposited films by these plasma methods, such as plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD) [6], are ranged into the interior of the triangle. Application fields of DLC films investigated from papers. Many papers purposed to apply for tribology due to the carbon-based films of low friction and wear resistance. Figure 1 shows the percentage of DLC research interest for application field. The biggest portion is tribology field. It is occupied 57%. Second, biomedical field hold 14%. Nowadays, biomedical field is took notice in many countries and significantly increased the research papers. DLC films actually applied to many industries in 2005 as shown figure 2. The most applied fields are mold and machinery industries. It took over 50%. The automobile industry is more and more increase application parts. In the near future, automobile industry is expected a big market for DLC coating. Figure 1 Research interests of carbon-based filmsFigure 2 Demand ratio of DLC coating for industry in 2005. In this presentation, I will introduce a trend of carbon-based coating research and applications.

  • It has been found that the misfit dislocations in heavily boron-doped layers originate from wafer edges. Moreover, the propagation of the misfit dislocation into a heavily boron-doped region can be suppressed by placing a surrounding undoped region. Using a surrounding undoped region the disloction-free heavily boron-deoped silicon membranes have been fabricated. The measured surface roughness, fracture strength, and residual tensile stress of the membrane are 20.angs. peak-to-peak, 1.39${\times}$10$^{10}$ and 2.7${\times}$10$^{9}$dyn/cm$^{2}$, while those of the conventional heavily boron-doped silicon membrane with high density of misfit dislocations are 500 peak-to-peak, 8.27${\times}$10$^{9}$ and 9.3${\times}$10$^{8}$dyn/cm$^{2}$ respectively. The differences between these two membranes are due to the misfit dislocations. Young's modulus has been extracted as 1.45${\times}$10$^{12}$dyn/cm$^{2}$ for both membranes. Also, the effective lattice constant of heavily boron-doped silicon, the in-plane lattice constant of the conventional membrane, and the density of misfit dislocation contained in the conventional membrane have been extracted as density of misfit dislocation contained in the conventional membrane have been extracted as density of misfit dislocation contained in the conventional membrane have been extracted as 5.424.angs. 5.426.angs. and 2.3${\times}$10$^{4}$/cm for the average boron concentration of 1.3${\times}$10$^{20}$/cm$^{-23}$ cm$^{3}$/atom. Without any buffer layers, a disloction-free lightly boron-doped epitaxial layer with good crsytalline quality has been directly grown on the dislocation-free heavily boron-doped silicon layer. X-ray diffraction analysis revealed that the epitaxial silicon has good crystallinity, similar to that grown on lightly doped silicon substrate. The leakage current of the n+/p gated diode fabricated in the epitaxial silicon has been measured to be 0.6nA/cm$^{2}$ at the reverse bias of 5V.

  • This study is to evaluate the physical and mechanical properties on the Ipseok-dae columnar joints of Mt. Mudeung National Park. For these purposes, physical and mechanical properties as well as discontinuity property on the Mudeungsan tuff, measurement of vibration and local meteorology around columnar joints, and ground deformation by self-weight of columnar joints were examined. For the physical and mechanical properties, average values were respectively 0.65% for porosity, 2.69 for specific gravity, 2.68 g/cm3 for density, and 2411 m/s for primary velocity, 323 MPa for uniaxial compressive strength, 81 GPa Young's modulus, and 0.25 for Poisson's ratio. For the joint shear test, average values were respectively 3.15 GPa/m for normal stiffness, 0.38 GPa/m for shear stiffness, 0.50 MPa for cohesion, and 35° for internal friction angle. The JRC standard and JRC chart was in the range of 4~6, and 1~1.5, respectively. The rebound value Q of silver schmidt hammer was 57 (≒ 90 MPa). It corresponds 20% of the uniaxial compressive strength of intact rock. The maximum vibration value around the Ipseok=dae columnar joints was in the range of 0.57 PPV (mm/s)~2.35 PPV (mm/s). The local meteorology of surface temperature, air temperature, humidity, and wind on and around columnar joints appeared to have been greatly influenced the weather on the day of measurement. For the numerical analysis of ground deformation due to its self-weight of the Ipseok-dae columnar joints, the maximum displacement of the right ground shows when the ground distance is approximately 2 m, while drastically decreased by 2~4 m, thereafter was insignificant. The maximum displacement of the middle ground shows when the ground distance is approximately 0~2 m, while drastically decreased by 3~10 m, thereafter was insignificant. The maximum displacement of the left ground shows when the ground distance is approximately 5~6 m, while drastically decreased by 6~10 m, thereafter was insignificant.

  • Previous test results showed that the current ASTM(American Standard for Testing and Materials) grip adapter for GFRP(Glass Fiber Reinforced Polymer) rebar was not fully successful in developing the design tensile strength of GFRP rebars with reasonable accuracy. It is because the current ASTM grip adapter which is composed of a pair of rectangular metal blocks of which inner faces are grooved along the longitudinal direction does not take into account the various geometric characteristics of GFRP rebar such as surface treatment, shape of bar cross section as well as physical characteristics such as poisson effect, elastic modulus in the transverse direction and so on. The objective of this paper is to provide how to proportion the optimum diameter of inner groove in ASTM grip adapter to develop design tensile strength of GFRP rebar. The proportioning of inner groove in ASTM grip adapter is based on the force equilibrium of GFRP rebar between tensile capacity and minimum frictional resistance required along the grip adapter. The frictional resistance of grip adapter is calculated based on the compressive strain compatibility in radial direction induced by the difference between diameter of GFRP rebar and inner groove In ASTM grip. All testing procedures were made according to the CSA S806-02 recommendations. From the preliminary test results on round-type GFRP rebars, it was found that maximum tensile loads acquired under the same testing conditions is highly affected by the diameter of inner groove in ASTM grip adapter. The grip adapter with specific dimension proportioned by proposed method recorded the highest tensile strength among them.
