The material for the machine tool structure should have high static stiffiness and damping in its property to improve both the static and dynamic performances. The static stiffness of a machine tool can be inceased by using either higher modulus material in the structure of a machine tool. However, the machine tool structrue with high stiffness but low damping is vulnerable to vibration at the resonance frequencies of the structure . For the high precision and highsped machine tool structure, therefore, the high damping capacity is most important in order to suppress vibration. The damping of a machine tool can not be increased by increasing the static stiffness. The best way to increase the damping capacity of the machine tool structure is to use a composite material which is composed of on material with high stiffness with low damping and another material with low stiffness with high damping. Therefore, in this paper, the bed of the ultra high precision grinding machine for mirror surface machining of brittle materials such as ceramics and composite materials was designed and manufactured with the epoxy concrete material. The epoxy concrete material was prepared by mixing epoxy resin with different size sands and gravels. The modulus, compressive strength, coefficient of thermal expansion, specific heat, and damping factor were measured by varying the compaction ratio, sizes and contents of the ingredients to assess the effect of the processing parameters on the mechanical properties of the material. Based of the measured properties, the prototype epoxy resin concrete bed for the mirror surface CNC grinding machine was designed and manufactured.
Rubber reinforcing carbon black N330 was treated by physical activation under $CO_2$ to different degrees of burn-off. The mechanical properties indicating the reinforcement of SBR (Styrene-Butadiene Rubber) vulcanizates filled by activated carbon blacks, such as tensile strength, modulus at 300% strain and elongation at break were determined. During $CO_2$ activation of fresh carbon blacks, the development of microporous structure caused an increase of extremely large specific surface area and the porosity turned out to be an increasing function of the degree of burn-off. The tensile strength and modulus at 300% of activated carbon blacks filled rubber composites were improved at lower loading ratios of 20 and 30 phr, but decreased drastically after 30 phr, which is considered that it might be difficult to get a fully dispersed rubber mixture at higher loading ratios for fillers having very large specific surface areas. However, the Electromagnetic Interference (EMI) shielding effectiveness of SBR rubber composites having activated carbon black at 74% yield were improved at a large extent when compared to those having raw carbon black and increased significantly as a function of increasing loading ratio.
The surface treatment effects of reinforcement filler were investigated based on the dynamic mechanical properties of mutiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs)/epoxy composites. The as-received MWCNTs(R-MWCNTs) were chemically modified by direct oxyfluorination method to improve the dispersibility and adhesiveness with epoxy resins in composite system. In order to investigate the induced functional groups on MWCNTs during oxyfluorination, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy was used. The thermo-mechanical property of MWCNTs/epoxy composite was also measured based on effects of oxyfluorination treatment of MWCNTs. The storage modulus of MWCNTs/epoxy composite was enhanced about 1.27 times through oxyfluorination of MWCNTs fillers at $25^{\circ}C$. The storage modulus of oxyfluorinated MWCNTs (OF73-MWCNTs) reinforced epoxy composite was much higher than that of R-MWCNTs/epoxy composite. It revealed that oxygen content led to the efficient carbon-fluorine covalent bonding during oxyfluorination. These functional groups on surface modified MWCNTs induced by oxyfluorination strikingly made an important role for the reinforced epoxy composite.
The importance of porous ceramics has been increasingly recognized and adequate strength of porous ceramics is now required for structural applications. Porosities of porous ceramics act as flaws in inner volume and outer surface which result in severe strength degradation. The effect of pore structure, however, on strength and reliability of porous ceramics has not been clearly understood. We investigate the relationship between pore structure and mechanical properties using a sphere indentation on bilayer structure, porous ceramic top layer with soft polymer substrate. Porous alumina and silica were prepared to characterize the isolated pore structure and interconnected pore structure, respectively. The porous ceramic with 1mm thickness were bonded to soft polycarbonate substrate and then fracture strengths were estimated from critical loads for radial cracking of porous ceramics during sphere indentation from top surface. This simple and reproducible technique provides Weibull modulus of strength of porous ceramics with different pore structure. It shows that the porous ceramics with isolated pore structure have higher strength and higher Weibull modulus as well, than those with interconnected pore structure even with the same porosity.

The allylamine plasma treatment is used to modify the surface properties of vapor grown carbon fibers (VGCF). It is to improve the interfacial bonding between the VGCF and epoxy matrix. The allylamine plasma process was performed by batch process in a vacuum chamber, using gas injection followed by plasma discharge for the durations of 20, 40 and 60 min. The interdependence of mechanical properties on the VGCF contents, treatment time and interfacial bonding between VGCF/ep was investigated. The interfacial bonding between VGCF and epoxy matrix was observed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) micrographs of nanocomposites fracture surfaces. The changes in the mechanical properties of VGCF/ep, such as the tensile modulus and strength were discussed. The mechanical properties of allylamine plasma treated (AAPT) VGCF/ep were compared with those of raw VGCF/ep. The tensile strength and modulus of allyamine plasma treated VGCF40 (40 min treatment)/ep demonstrated a higher value than those of other samples. The mechanical properties were increased with the allyamine plasma treatment due to the improved adhesion at VGCF/ep interface. The modification of the carbon nanofibers surface was observed by transmission electron microscopy (TEM). SEM micrographs showed an excellent dispersion of VGCF in epoxy matrix by ultrasonic method.
Noncarious cervical lesions(NCCLs) are characterized as structural defects found on the tooth surface of the cement-enamel junction. Loss of tooth structure through noncarious mechanisms may vary in etiology and clinical presentation for each individual but presently many clinician now classify this as tooth failure of abfraction due to the stress applied in the cervical area of the tooth under oral physiological and pathological loads. In the current study, we investigated the stress distribution of maxillary premolar with NCCL using simulated 3D finite element analysis. The results were as follows: 1. In the sound maxillary premolar, the stresses were highly concentrated at cervical enamel surface of the mesiobuccal line angle, asymmetrically. 2. Once the lesion has been formed, the highest stress concentration was observed around the apex of the wedge shaped lesion. 3. In four types of NCCL, the patterns of stress distribution were similar and the peak stress was observed at mesial corner and also stresses concentrated at lesion apex. 4. Lesion cavity modification of rounding apex, reduced stress of lesion apex. 5. When restoring the notch-shaped lesion, material with high elastic modulus worked well at the lesion apex and material with low elastic modulus worked well at the cervical cavosurface margin.
One of the main objectives of researches for the chemical grouting is to assess the changes in soil properties caused by injection of chemical grout. Especially the changes in the strength properties of soils, such as elastic modulus, shear modulus of ground due to injection of chemical grout has drawn our attention. Since the specific surface changes with variation in the grain size of sandy soil, the influence of grain size of sandy toil on the strength and stiffness of silicate-grouted soil was investicated in this study by earring out uniaxial and triaxial compression tests. It was found that the strength and stiffness of grouted soil increased as the grain size of sandy soil decreases, the possibility of estimating the strength of grouted soil was confirmed through the study of relationship between specific surface of sandy soil and the strength of chemical gel.

We investigated the tribological properties of amorphous carbon (a-C) films deposited with CrC interlayers of various thicknesses as the adhesive layer. A-C and CrC thin films were deposited using the unbalanced magnetron (UBM) sputtering method with graphite and chromium as the targets. CrC films as the interlayer were fabricated under a-C films, and various structural, surface, and tribological properties of a-C films deposited with various CrC interlayer thicknesses were investigated. With various CrC interlayer thicknesses under a-C films, the tribological properties of CrC/a-C films were improved; the increased film thickness exhibited a maximum high hardness of over 27.5 GPa, high elastic modulus of over 242 GPa, critical load of 31 N, residual stress of 1.85 GPa, and a smooth surface below 0.09 nm at the condition of 30-nm CrC thickness.
Using a Dynamic Mechanical Analyzer (DMA), mechanical properties like modulus and phase transition temperature of polyester composites of banana fibers (treated and untreated) are measured simultaneously. The shifting of phase transition temperature is observed in some treatments. The performance of the composite depends to a large extent on the adhesion between polymer matrix and the reinforcement. This is often achieved by surface modification of the matrix or the filler. Banana fiber was modified chemically to achieve improved interfacial interaction between the fiber and the polyester matrix. Various silanes and alkalies were used to modify the fiber surface. Chemical modification was found to have a profound effect on the fiber/matrix interaction, which is evident from the values of phase transition temperatures. Of the various chemical treatments, simple alkali treatment with 1% NaOH was found to be the most effective.

Vapor grown carbon fibers (VGCF) were treated with atmospheric plasma enhancing the surface area in order to improve the bonding to the matrix in epoxy composites. The changes in the mechanical properties of VGCF/epoxy nanocompostes, such as tensile modulus and tensile strength were investigated in this study. VGCF with and without atmospheric plasma treatment for surface modification were used in this investigation. The interdependence of these properties on the VGCF contents and interfacial bonding between VGCF/epoxy matrix were discussed. The mechanical properties of atmospheric plasma treated (APT) VGCF/epoxy were compared with raw VGCF/epoxy. The tensile strength of APT VGCF/epoxy nanocomposites showed higher value than that of raw VGCF. The tensile strength was increased with atmospheric plasma treatment, due to better adhesion at VGCF/epoxy interface. The tensile modulus of raw VGCF and APT VGCF/epoxy matrix were of the similar value. The dispersion of the VGCF was investigated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), SEM micrographs showed an excellent dispersion of VGCF in epoxy matrix by ultrasonic method.
