We investigated the potassium remaining on a crystalline silicon solar cell after potassium hydroxide (KOH) etching and its effect on the lifetime of the solar cell. KOH etching is generally used to remove the saw damage caused by cutting a Si ingot; it can also be used to etch the rear side of a textured crystalline silicon solar cell before atomic layer-deposited Al2O3 growth. However, the potassium remaining after KOH etching is known to be detrimental to the efficiency of Si solar cells. In this study, we etched a crystalline silicon solar cell in three ways in order to determine the effect of the potassium remnant on the efficiency of Si solar cells. After KOH etching, KOH and tetramethylammonium hydroxide (TMAH) were used to etch the rear side of a crystalline silicon solar cell. To passivate the rear side, an Al2O3 layer was deposited by atomic layer deposition (ALD). After ALD Al2O3 growth on the KOH-etched Si surface, we measured the lifetime of the solar cell by quasi steady-state photoconductance (QSSPC, Sinton WCT-120) to analyze how effectively the Al2O3 layer passivated the interface of the Al2O3 layer and the Si surface. Secondary ion mass spectroscopy (SIMS) was also used to measure how much potassium remained on the surface of the Si wafer and at the interface of the Al2O3 layer and the Si surface after KOH etching and wet cleaning.
Plasma sulfnitriding technology was employed to harden the surface of SKD61 steel. The plasma sulfnitriding was performed with 3 torr gas pressure at $580^{\circ}C$ for 20 hours. Plasma sulfnitriding resulted in the formation of very thin $2-3\mu\textrm{m}$ FeS sulfide layer on top of $15-20\mu\textrm{m}$ compound layer, which consisted of predominantly $\varepsilon$- $Fe{2-3}$ N and a second phase of $\Upsilon'-Fe_4$N. In comparision with plasma nitriding treatment, plasma sulfnitriding treatment showed better surface roughness and corrosion resistance due to the presence of the thin FeS layer. which coated microvoids and microcracks on top of the nitrided layer. It was also found that plasma sulfnitrided sample showed better wear resistance due to the presence of the thin FeS layer which acted as a solid lubricant.

The thermal barrier coating (TBC) for inner wall of liquid-fuel rocket combustor consists of NiCrAlY as bonding layer and $ZrO_2$ as a top layer. In most case, the plasma spray coating is used for TBC process and this process has inherent possibility of cracking due to large difference in thermal expansion coefficients among bonding layer, top layer and metal substrate. In this paper, we suggest crack-free TBC process by using a precise electrodeposition technique. Electrodeposited Ni-P/Cr double layer has similar thermal expansion coefficient to the Cu alloy substrate resulting in superior thermal barrier performance and high temperature oxidation resistance. We studied the effects of phosphorous concentrations (2.12 wt%, 6.97 wt%, and 10.53 wt%) on the annealing behavior ($750^{\circ}C$) of Ni-P samples and Cr double layered electrodeposits. Annealing temperature was simulated by combustion test condition. Also, we conducted SEM/EDS and XRD analysis for Ni-P/Cr samples. The results showed that the band layers between Ni-P and Cr are Ni and Cr, and has no formed with heat treatment. These band layers were solid solution of Cr and Ni which is formed by interdiffusion of both alloy elements. In addition, the P was not found in it. The thickness of band layer was increased with increasing annealing time. We expected that the band layer can improve the adhesion between Cr and Ni-P.

This study investigates the effects of a carbon fiber layer formed on the surface of an etched aluminum current collector on the electrochemical properties of the activated carbon electrodes for an electric double layer capacitor. A particle size analyzer, field-emission SEM, and nitrogen adsorption/desorption isotherm analyzer are employed to analyze the structure of the carbon fiber layer. The electric and electrochemical properties of the activated carbon electrodes using a carbon fiber layer are evaluated using an electrode resistance meter and a charge-discharge tester, respectively. To uniformly coat the surface with carbon fiber, we applied a planetary mill process, adjusted the particle size, and prepared the carbon paste by dispersing in a binder. Subsequently, the carbon paste was coated on the surface of the etched aluminum current collector to form the carbon under layer, after which an activated carbon slurry was coated to form the electrodes. Based on the results, the interface resistance of the EDLC cell made of the current collector with the carbon fiber layer was reduced compared to the cell using the pristine current collector. The interfacial resistance decreased from 0.0143 Ω·cm2 to a maximum of 0.0077 Ω·cm2. And degradation reactions of the activated carbon electrodes are suppressed in the 3.3 V floating test. We infer that it is because the improved electric network of the carbon fiber layer coated on the current collector surface enhanced the electron collection and interfacial diffusion while protecting the surface of the cathode etched aluminum; thereby suppressing the formation of Al-F compounds.
The excess molar surface entropies of each surface layers are calculated applying the modified significant structure theory of liquid. The calculated excess molar surface entropy for the first top surface layer is slightly greater than the entropy of surface formation of ideal molecules,$^5$ the latter is equal to Rln2. The excess entropy for the second surface layer is small and that for the third layer is negligible at low temperatures. The surface tensions of argon, nitrogen, methane, benzene and halogens are calculated applying the modified significant structure theory of liquid.
The layer that is directly influenced by ground surface is called the atmospheric boutsdary layer in comparison with the free atmosphere of higher layer. In the boundary layer, the changes of wind, temperature and coefficient of turbulent diffusion in altitude are large and have great influences an atmospheric diffusion. The purpose of this paper is to express the structure and characteristics of development of mixed layer by using laboratory experiment and numerical simulation. Laboratory experiment using water tank are performed that closely simulate the process of break up of nocturnal surface inversion above heated surface and its phenomena are analyzed by the use of horizontally averaged temperature which is observed. The result obtained from the laboratory experiment is compared with theoretical ones from ; \textsc{k}-\varepsilon numerical model. The results are summarized as follows. 1) The horizontally averaged temperature was found to vary smoothly with height and the mixed layer developed obviously being affected by the convection. 2) The mean height of mixed layer may be predicted as a function of time, knowing the mean initial temperature gradient. The experimental values are associated well with the theoretical values computed for value of the universal constant $C_r$= 0.16, our $C_r$ value is little smaller than the value found by Townsend and Deardoru et al.
We studied the physical properties of the mercaptopyruvic-acid layer formed on gold surfaces, which has the interactions with the titanium dioxide surface for design of gold- titanium dioxide distribution. Surface force measurements were performed, using the atomic force microscope (AFM), between the surfaces as a function of the salt concentration and pH value. The forces were analyzed with the DLVO (Derjaguin-Landau-Verwey-Overbeek) theory, to evaluate the potential and charge density of the surfaces quantitatively for each salt concentration and each pH value. The difference in the properties reflected the effect of the isoelectric point on the surface forces. The forces were interpreted for the evaluation with the law of mass action and the ionizable groups on the surface. The salt concentration dependence of the surface properties, found from the measurement at pH 8.0, was consistent with the prediction from the law. It was found that the mercaptopyruvic-acid layer had higher values for the surface charge densities and potentials than the titanium dioxide surfaces at pH 8, which may be attributed to the ionized-functional-groups of the mercaptopyruvic-acid layer.

We fabricated organic photovoltaic (OPV) based on ZnO ripple structure on indium tin oxide as electron-collecting layers and PTB7-F20 as donor polymer. In addition, atomic layer deposition (ALD) was used for preparing additional ZnO layers on rippled ZnO. Addition of 2 nm-thick ALD-ZnO resulted in enhanced initial OPV performance and stability. Based on photoluminescence results, we suggest that ALD-ZnO layers reduced number of surface defect sites on ZnO, which can act as electron-hole recombination center of OPV, and increased resistance of ZnO towards surface defect formation.
PURPOSES : This study determined the optimal usage rate of RAP (reclaimed asphalt pavement) using cold central-plant recycling (CCPR) on a road-surface layer. In addition, a mixture-aggregate gradation design and a curing method based on the proposed rate for the surface-layer mix design were proposed. METHODS : First, current research trends were investigated by analyzing the optimum moisture content, mix design, and quality standards for surface layers in Korea and abroad. To analyze the aggregate characteristics of the RAP, its aggregate-size characteristics were analyzed through the combustion asphalt content test and the aggregate sieve analysis test. Moreover, aggregate-segregation experiments were performed to examine the possibility of RAP aggregate segregation from field compaction and vehicle traffic. After confirming the RAP quality standards, coarse aggregate and fine aggregate, aggregate-gradation design and quality tests were conducted for mixtures with 40% and 50% RAP usage. The optimum moisture content of the surface-layer mixture containing RAP was tested, as was the evapotranspiration effect on the surface-layer mixture of the optimum moisture content. RESULTS : After analyzing the RAP recycled aggregate size and extraction aggregate size, 13-8mm aggregate was found to be mostly 8mm aggregate after combustion. After using surface-chipping and mixing methods to examine the possibility of RAP aggregate segregation, it was found that the mixing method contributed very little for 3.32%, and because the surface-chipping method applied compaction energy directly as the maximum assumption the separation ratio was 15.46%. However, the composite aggregate gradation did not change. Using a 40% RAP aggregate rate on the surface-layer mixture for cold central-plant recycling satisfied the Abroad quality standard. The optimum moisture content of the surface-layer mixture was found to be 7.9% using the modified Marshall compaction test. It was found that the mixture was over 90% cured after curing at $60^{\circ}C$ for two days. CONCLUSIONS : To use the cold central-plant recycling mixture on a road-surface layer, a mixture-aggregate gradation design was proposed as the RAP recycled aggregate size without considering aggregate segregation, and the RAP optimal usage rate was 40%. In addition, the modified Marshall compaction test was used to determine the optimum moisture content as a mix-design parameter, and the curing method was adapted using the method recommended by Asphalt Recycling & Reclaiming Association (ARRA).
The effects of post-oxidation and sulfnitriding treatments on the phase transformation in the nitrided case of tool steels have been studied. Dense and compact $Fe_3O_4$ layer was formed at the outer surface of nitride compound layer by post-oxidation treatment and multi layer of iron sulfide(FeS) was formed in the compound layer by sulfnitriding treatment. The surface hardness decreased because of formation of the soft oxide or sulfide at the nitride surface. Diffusion layer of nitride case was not affected by post-oxidation treatment or sulfnitriding treatment of nitrided alloy tool steels.
