Surface modification of glutaraldehyde fixed bovine pericardium (GFBP) was successfully carried out with hyaluronic acid (HA) derivatives. At first, HA was chemically modified with adipic dihydrazide (ADH) to introduce hydrazide functional group into the carboxyl group of HA backbone. Then, GFBP was surface modified by grafting HA-ADH to the free aldehyde groups on the tissue and the subsequent HA-ADH hydrogel coating. HA-ADH hydrogels could be prepared through selective crosslinking at low pH between hydrazide groups of HA-ADH and crosslinkers containing succinimmidyl moieties with minimized protein denaturation. When HAADH hydrogels were prepared at low pH of 4.8 in the presence of erythropoietin (EPO) as a model protein, EPO release was continued up to $85\%$ of total amount of loaded EPO for 4 days. To the contrary, only $30\%$ of EPO was released from HA-ADH hydrogels prepared at pH=7.4, which might be due to the denaturation of EPO during the crosslinking reaction. Because the carboxyl groups on the glucuronic acid residues are recognition sites for HA degradation by hyaluronidase, the HA-ADH hydrogels degraded more slowly than HA hydrogels prepared by the crosslinking reaction of divinyl sulfone with hydroxyl groups of HA. Following a two-week subcutaneous implantation in osteopontin-null mice, clinically significant levels of calcification were observed for the positive controls without any surface modification. However, the calcification of surface modified GFBP with HA-ADH and HA-ADH hydrogels was drastically reduced by more than $85\%$ of the positive controls. The anti-calcification effect of HA surface modification was also confirmed by microscopic analysis of explanted tissue after staining with Alizarin Red S for calcium, which followed the trend as observed with calcium quantification.
A functionalization of mesoporous materials with organosilane was carried out via a post-synthesis grafting method and $(n-BuCp)_2ZrCl_2$/methylaluminoxane (MAO) as subsequently immobilized on the functionalized mesoporous materials for ethylene polymerization. Organosilanes having amine, cyano or imidazoline group such as $N$-[(3-trimethoxysilyl)propyl]ethylenediamine (2NS), 4-(triethoxysilyl)butyronitrile (1NCy), 1-(3-triethoxysilylpropyl)-2-imidazoline (2NIm) were used for the surface functionalization of mesoporous materials. In the SBA-15/2NS/$(n-BuCp)_2ZrCl_2$ catalyst preparation, the amount of MAO in feed increased with an decrease in the Zr content of the supported catalyst, and Al content in the supported catalyst increased. The ethylene homopolymerization activity of SBA-15/2NS/$(n-BuCp)_2ZrCl_2$ dramatically increased as the amount of MAO in feed increased. Furthermore, when the immobilization time was 6 hrs, SBA-15/2NS/$(n-BuCp)_2ZrCl_2$ showed the highest activity. The activities of supported 2NS-, 1NCy-, 2NIm-functionalized catalysts decreased in the following order, SBA-15/2NS/ > SBA-15/2NIm/ > SBA-15/1NCy/$(n-BuCp)_2ZrCl_2$. 2NS and 2NIm which have two amine groups per silane molecule were shown to interact with $(n-BuCp)_2ZrCl_2$ strongly compared to 1NCy which has one amine group. Thus, the activities increased with an increase in the nitrogen and the Zr content of the supported catalysts.
In order to find out the feasibility of producing grafted red pepper (Capsicum annuum L.) seedlings with root-removed rootstocks, rooting response and subsequent seedling growth was also evaluated. Pinching the top of pepper seedlings for cutting significantly reduced the rooting of cuttings in 10 commercial hot pepper cultivars. Normal rooting was obtained from all commercial cultivars even though the rooting response varied considerably among cultivars. Poor rooting was observed in 'Gukbo' and 'Chungyang'. Rootone treatment significantly promoted rooting in all tested cultivars and the decrease of rooting response caused by pinching could be fully recovered by rootone treatment. Among the ten commercial rootstocks developed for hot pepper grafting, 'Tantan' showed the best rooting response followed by 'Konesian Hot' and 'Wonkwang 1'. Most of these rootstocks, however, showed higher rooting response as compared to the popular commercial cultivars, 'Manit', 'Chungyang', and 'Nokkwang'. Pasting of IBA at cut surface promoted the rooting of pepper cuttings, but the effect was not quite pronounced as compared to rootone treatment.
Saline water electrolysis, known as chlor-alkali (CA) membrane process, is an electrochemical process to generate valued chemicals such as chlorine, hydrogen and sodium hydroxide with high purities higher than 99%, using an electrolytic cell composed of cation exchange membrane, anode and cathode. It is necessary to reduce energy consumption per a unit chemical production. This issue can be solved by decreasing intrinsic resistance of the membrane and the electrodes and/or by reducing their interfacial resistance. In this study, the electron radiation grafting of a $Na^+$ ion-selective polymer was conducted onto a hydrocarbon sulfonated ionomer membrane with high chemical resistance. This approach was effective in improving electrochemical efficiency via the synergistic effect of relatively fast $Na^+$ ion conduction and reduced interfacial resistance.

Background: Median sternotomy can weaken the upper abdominal wall and result in subxiphoid incisional hernia. We evaluated risk factors associated with the development of subxiphoid incisional hernias after coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG). Materials and Methods: Of 1,656 isolated CABGs performed between January 2001 and July 2010, 1,599 patients who were completely followed up were analyzed. The mean follow-up duration was $49.5{\pm}34.3$ months. Subxiphoid incisional hernia requiring surgical repair developed in 13 patients (0.8%). The hernia was diagnosed $16.3{\pm}10.3$ months postoperatively, and hernia repair was performed $25.0{\pm}26.1$ months after the initial operation. Risk factors associated with the development of subxiphoid incisional hernia were analyzed with the Cox proportional hazard model. Results: Five-year freedom from the hernia was 99.0%. Univariate analysis revealed that female sex (p=0.019), height (p=0.019), body surface area (p=0.046), redo operation (p=0.012), off-pump CABG (p=0.049), a postoperative wound problem (p=0.041), postoperative bleeding (p=0.046), and low cardiac output syndrome (p<0.001) were risk factors for the development of the hernia. Multivariable analysis showed that female sex (p=0.01) and low cardiac output syndrome (p<0.001) were associated with subxiphoid hernia formation. Conclusion: Female sex and postoperative low cardiac output syndrome were risk factors of subxiphoid hernia. Therefore, special attention is needed for patients with high-risk factors.
Surface modification of macromolecules renders a progressive and favorable method to enhance the properties of polymeric materials and improves conductivity, wettability, stability, adhesion, antibacterial properties, etc. of polymeric surfaces without deterioration of the polymer bulk properties. Polyolefins such as polyethylene and polypropylene were grafted with maleic anhydride(MAH) as a functional monomer in solution. Evidence for grafting was shown with FTIR measurement. The grafting ratio was determined from chemical titration. The higher MAH loading, the lower contact angle(${\theta}$) was obtained. With the increasing content of MAH, melting temperature($T_m$) of maleic anhydride grafted polymer decreased while decomposition temperature($T_d$) of maleic anhydride grafted polymer increased.
The distinguishing characteristic of the glow discharge is that chemical reaction induced by partially ionized gases are limited only to the substrate surface. Most studies have been done on the plasma etching and polymerization. The graft polymerization in vapour phase by cold plasma has been rarely investigated. In this study the system of tub3ar reaction chamber with capacitively coupled electrode of alternative current of 60 Hz was employed for the graft polymerization. The graft polymerization of Acylic Acid(AA) onto the poly (ethylene terephthalate) (PET) was carried out by treatment of PET film and fabric by cold plasma (glow discharge of argon gas), followed by the supply of AA vapour. The graft yield was about 1 wt%. The surface property was determined by contact angle, the surface tension was evaluated by zisman’s plot and equation of surface tension mesurement. The results were as follows: 1. In order to obtain lower contact angle, it was effective to avoid the vicinity of electrodes for a setting position of substrate. 2. Contact angle affected on the monomer pressure and its duration of exposure to the acid vapour. 3. Polymer radical formation was influenced by the changes of the value of current density and plasma treatment time. 4. Total surface tension of plasma grafted PET film increased. With an increase in the carboxylic acid content, the dispersion force decreased, while, the polar force and hydrogen bonding force increased. 5. The contact angle decreased from $75^\circ$ to around $30^\circ$ by plasma grafting. There was no ageing effect on the contact angle after 4 months.
The formation of hydrophilic surface based on polymers has received great attention due to the anti-adhesion of bacteria on solid substrates. Anti-adhesion coatings are aimed at suppressing the initial step of biofilm formation via non-cytotoxic mechanisms, and surfaces applied hydrophilic or ionic polymers showed the anti-adhesion effect for bioentities, such as proteins and bacteria. This is attributed to the formation of surface barrier from hydration layers, repulsions and osmotic stresses from polymer brushes, and electrostatic interactions between ionic polymers and cell surfaces. The antifouling polymer coating is usually fabricated by the grafting method through the bonding with functional groups on surfaces and the deposition method utilizing biomimetic anchors. This mini-review is a summary of representative antifouling polymers, coating strategies, and antibacterial efficacy. Furthermore, we will discuss consideration on the large area surface coating for application to public facilities and industry.

Introduction: This study examined the effect of recombinant human bone morphogenetic protein (rhBMP)-2 and $\beta$-tricalcium phosphate ($\beta$-TCP) on new bone formation in a rabbit calvarium using a rapid prototype titanium cap (RP Ti cap). Materials and Methods: Eight New Zealand white rabbits were used in this study. Hemispherical RP Ti caps (10 mm in diameter) were implanted subperiosteally on the rabbit calvaria. $\beta$-TCP was filled in the RP Ti cap in the control group, and rhBMP-2 soaked $\beta$-TCP was used in experimental group. The rabbits were sacrificed 2 and 4 weeks after the operation. The volume and pattern of newly formed bone was analyzed by micro computed tomography (CT). Results: Macroscopically, there were no abnormal findings in any of the animals. The micro CT images revealed new bone from the calvaria that expanded gradually toward the top of the titanium cap, particularly along the inner surface of the titanium cap in the experimental group at 4 weeks after grafting. There was no significant difference in new bone volume ratio between the control and experimental groups at 2 weeks after grafting. There was a statistically significant difference in the new bone volume ratio between the experimental ($14.1{\pm}1.8\;%$) and control ($7.2{\pm}1.5\;%$) groups at 4 weeks after grafting (P<0.01). Conclusion: The RP Ti cap can effectively guide new bone formation and rhBMP-2 can induce the new bone formation.
The present study was to evaluate the healing patterns of guided tissue regeneration( GTR) using resorbable $Vicryl^{(R)}$(polyglactin 910) mesh and nonresorbable expanded polytetrafluoroethylene(ePTFE) membrane with or without bone grafting using autogeneous bone and demineralized freeze-dried bone allograft(DFDBA) in the grade II furcation defects. Mucoperiosteal flaps were reflected buccally in the mandibular 2nd, 3rd and 4th premolar areas and furcation defects were created surgically by removing $5{\times}6mm$ alveolar bone in 4 dogs. Root surfaces were thoroughly debrided of periodontal ligament and cementum, and notches were placed on root surface at the most apical bone level. In the right and left mandibular quadrant, each tooth was received $Vicryl^{(R)}$ mesh(ACE Surgical Supply Co., USA) only, $Vicryl^{(R)}$ mesh with DFDBA, $Vicryl^{(R)}$ mesh with autogeneous bone grafts, ePTFE membrane($Core-tex^{(R)}$ membrane, W.L. Gore & Associates Inc., USA) only, ePTFE membrane with DFDBA or ePTFE membrane with autogeneous bone grafts. For the fluorescent microscopic examination, fluorescent agents were injected at 2, 4 and 8 weeks after surgery. Four weeks after surgery, 2 dogs were sacrificed and ePTFE membranes were removed from remaining 2 dogs, which were sacrificed at 12 weeks after surgery. Undecalcified tissues were embedded in methylmethacrylate and $10{\mu}m$ thick sections were cut in a buccolingual direction. These sections were stained with hematoxylin-eosin stain and Masson's trichrome stain, and evaluated by descriptive histology and linear measurements. The results were as follows : 1) $Vicryl^{(R)}$ mesh group showed less connective tissue attachment than ePTFE membrane group. 2) The combination of GTR using $Vicryl^{(R)}$ mesh and osseous grafts resulted in new attachment and new bone formation more than GTR using $Vicryl^{(R)}$ mesh only. 3) GTR using ePTFE membrane, with or without osseous grafts, enhanced periodontal regeneration. 4) Root resorption and dentoalveolar ankylosis were observed in the areas treated with the combination of GTR and DFDBA. It was suggested that the effect of adjunctive bone grafting in GTR procedure depends on the materials and the physical properties of barrier membranes. $Vicryl^{(R)}$ mesh performed a barrier function and the use of adjunctive bone grafting may enhance the periodontal regeneration.
