Numerical Analysis for Hull Cleaning ROV Resistance Performance (선저청소로봇 저항성능 전산해석)

  • The flaw around a ROV (Remotely Operated Vehicle) has been numerically investigated to improve resistance performance by modifying the hull form of the ROV. For the base hull form considered in this study, the form drag rather than the friction drag is dominant to the total drag Subsequently, the surfaces on which the local pressure highly acts have been modified to produce the streamlined-shape. Based on the surface modification, seven different hull forms have been chosen as candidates for drag reduction. Among the candidates, the semi-sphericalized housing and the streamlined-bow achieved greatest drag reduction comparing with the others. Consequently, the hull form combined with the semi-sphericalized housing and the streamlined-bow gave approximately 17% drag reduction at the design velocity of 3 knots.

  • Concrete filled steel tubes are extensively applied in engineering structures due to their resistance to high tensile and compressive load and convenience in construction. But one major flaw, their vulnerability to environmental attack, can severely reduce the strength and life of these structures. Degradation due to corrosion of steel confining the concrete is one of the major durability problems faced by civil engineers to maintain these structures. The problem accelerates as inner surface of steel tube is in contact with concrete which serves as electrolyte. If it remains unnoticed, it further accelerates and can be catastrophic. This paper discusses a non-destructive degradation monitoring technique for early detection corrosion in steel tubes in CFST members. Due to corrosion, damage in the form of debonding and pitting occurs in steel sections. Guided ultrasonic waves have been used as a feasible and attractive solution for the detection and monitoring of corrosion damages in CFST sections. Guided waves have been utilized to monitor the effect of notch and debond defects in concrete filled steel tubes simulating pitting and delamination of steel tubes from surrounding concrete caused by corrosion. Pulse transmission has been used to monitor the healthy and simulated damaged specimens. A methodology is developed and successfully applied for the monitoring of concrete filled steel tubular sections undergoing accelerated chloride corrosion. The ultrasonic signals efficiently narrate the state of steel tube undergoing corrosion.

  • Current maintenance operations and integrity checks on a wide array of structures require personnel entry into normally-inaccessible or hazardous areas to perform necessary nondestructive inspections. To gain access for these inspections, structure must be disassembled and removed or personnel must be transported to remote locations. The use of in-situ sensors, coupled with remote interrogation, can be employed to overcome a myriad of inspection impediments stemming from accessibility limitations, complex geometries, the location and depth of hidden damage, and the isolated location of the structure. Furthermore, prevention of unexpected flaw growth and structural failure could be improved if on-board health monitoring systems were used to more regularly assess structural integrity. A research program has been completed to develop and validate Comparative Vacuum Monitoring (CVM) Sensors for surface crack detection. Statistical methods using one-sided tolerance intervals were employed to derive Probability of Detection (POD) levels for a wide array of application scenarios. Multi-year field tests were also conducted to study the deployment and long-term operation of CVM sensors on aircraft. This paper presents the quantitative crack detection capabilities of the CVM sensor, its performance in actual flight environments, and the prospects for structural health monitoring applications on aircraft and other civil structures.

  • On account of small size and light weight, a high-speed machine is regarded as a key technology for many future applications of drive systems. In high-speed applications, permanent magnet synchronous motors have a number of merits such as high efficiency and high power density. Therefore, they are suitable for driving the air-blower of a fuel cell electric vehicle (FCEV) where space and energy savings are critical. Particularly, a surface-mounted permanent magnet synchronous motor (SPMSM) of them is mainly used as a high-speed machine. However, the motor has a fatal flaw due to a retaining can to maintain the mechanical integrity of a rotor assembly. The can results in the increase of magnetic air-gap length in the SPMSM. Thus, in this paper, an interior permanent magnet synchronous motor (IPMSM) is applied in order to drive the air-blower of FCEV instead of the SPMSM, and the experimental results of two models are compared to verify the capability of the IPMSM for high-speed applications.

Magnetic Flux Leakage (MFL) based Defect Characterization of Steam Generator Tubes using Artificial Neural Networks

  • Material defects in the Steam Generator Tubes (SGT) of sodium cooled fast breeder reactor (PFBR) can lead to leakage of water into sodium. The water and sodium reaction will lead to major accidents. Therefore, the examination of steam generator tubes for the early detection of defects is an important requirement for safety and economic considerations. In this work, the Magnetic Flux Leakage (MFL) based Non Destructive Testing (NDT) technique is used to perform the defect detection process. The rectangular notch defects on the outer surface of steam generator tubes are modeled using COMSOL multiphysics 4.3a software. The obtained MFL images are de-noised to improve the integrity of flaw related information. Grey Level Co-occurrence Matrix (GLCM) features are extracted from MFL images and taken as input parameter to train the neural network. A comparative study on characterization have been carried out using feed-forward back propagation (FFBP) and cascade-forward back propagation (CFBP) algorithms. The results of both algorithms are evaluated with Mean Square Error (MSE) as a prediction performance measure. The average percentage error for length, depth and width are also computed. The result shows that the feed-forward back propagation network model performs better in characterizing the defects.

  • Flaws at dissimilar metal welds (DMWs), such as reactor coolant systems components, Control Rod Drive Mechanism (CRDM), Bottom Mounted Instrumentation (BMI) etc., in nuclear power plants have been found. Notably, primary water stress corrosion cracking (PWSCC) in the DMWs could cause significant reliability problems at nuclear power plants. Therefore, phased array ultrasound is widely used for inspecting surface break cracks and stress corrosion cracks in DMWs. However, inspection of DMWs using phased array ultrasound has a relatively low probability of detection of cracks, because the crystalline structure of welds causes distortion and splitting of the ultrasonic beams which propagates anisotropic medium. Therefore, advanced evaluation techniques of phased array ultrasound are needed for improvement in the probability of detection of flaws in DMWs. Thus, in this study, an investigation of focusing and steering phased array ultrasound in DMWs was carried out using a time reversal technique, and an adaptive focusing technique based on finite element method (FEM) simulation. Also, evaluation of focusing performance of three different focusing techniques was performed by comparing amplitude of phased array ultrasonic signals scattered from the targeted flaw with three different time delays.

  • In this paper, we develop a vision inspection system for inspecting flaws on plastic products such as insufficient moldings, spots, scratches. The inspection algorithm for this system consist of image binarization for curved structure of plastic products, image noise removal using morphology operation, labeling methods for candidate regions and image filtering and calibration method for flaw inspection. In order to improve its performance, we also develop fast image processing algorithm based on GUI. To verify the effectiveness of this system, we conducted evaluation for the system accuracy and the inspection algorithm processing time.

  • This paper describes a probabilistic fracture mechanics(PFM) analysis based on Monte Carlo(MC) simulation. In the analysis of CANDU pressure tube, the depth and aspect ratio of an initial semi-elliptical surface crack, a fracture toughness value and delayed hydride cracking(DHC) velocity are assumed to be probabilistic variables. As an example, some failure probabilities of piping and CANDU pressure tube are calculated using MC method with the stratified sampling MC technique, taking analysis conditions of normal operations. In the stratified MC simulation, a sampling space of probabilistic variables is divided into a number of small cells. For the verification of analysis results, a comparison study of the PFM analysis using other commercial code is carried out and a good agreement was observed between those results.

  • This study was carried out to investigate a influence of humidity variation (%) on the magnetic properties and the surface flaws in the fabrication of Fe-based $Fe_{78}Si_9B_{13}$ amorphous alloy ribbon by Planar Flow Casting process. As a result, the size of the air pocket and the droplet which is observed in the contact surface and the free face of the amorphous alloy ribbon becomes large when the humidity increases and the size highly increases with the surface roughness at the same time. Especially, the surface roughness value which is made in the 65 % of the humidity is the lowest in the contact surface ($Ra=0.60{\mu}m$, $Rz=3.11{\mu}m$) and the free face ($Ra=0.47{\mu}m$, $Rz=3.00{\mu}m$). Also, in case of the soft magnetic property of the magnetic core which is made with the toroidal core of $23(OD)^*20(ID)^*20(H)$ size, in the sample of the amorphous alloy ribbon which is made in 65% of the humidity, the most excellent value is gained as $B_s(B_{700})=1.055T$, $H_c=0.083Oe$, permeability = 1,197 and core loss = 0.276W/kg.

Flow Properties of Liquid Epoxy Compounds as a Function of Filler Fraction for the Underfill (Underfill용 액상 Epoxy Compound의 Filler 충진에 따른 Flow특성 연구)

  • To develop the underfill materials which are required for the new process of semi-conductor industry, the properties of epoxy/anhydride/cobalt(II) catalyst system with two types of fused silica(1 $\mu\textrm{m}$, 8 $\mu\textrm{m}$) are studied as a function of filler fraction. According to the curing profile, the optimum catalyst amount was 1.0 wt% for full curing at the conditions of $160^{\circ}C$/l5 min., and we could conclude that the viscosity has superior effect on the real flaw through the relationship between surface tension and viscosity data. The underfills which were filled with 1 $\mu\textrm{m}$ fused silica did not show good flowability, but they should be useful by improving the viscosity for a future process which has small gaps. The underfills which were filled with 8 $\mu\textrm{m}$ fused silica showed good flowability when the filler contents were 55~60 vol%. The model which was referred by Matthew can predict the real flow length only when the underfill has high viscosity and low surface tension.
