  • The in-plane permeabilities for domestic geotextile products are calculated by some theoretical formulas and compared with them obtained by experiments to examine the suitability of those formulas. The results obtained are as follows: 1. It appears that the diameter of the filament yarn is larger and more uniform than that of the staple fiber according to the microscopic analysis on the geotextile 2. The in-plane permeability of the geotextile shows that the theoretical values by drag and channel theory is close to the experimental ones. 3. The porosity of the geotextile is hardly influenced by normal pressure. 4. In the case of the same thickness of the geotextile the side surface area of the filament yarn is larger than that of the staple fiber. 5. The capillary height of the geotextile shows that the theoretical values is close to the experimental ones and thick geotextile is higher than thin geotextile.

  • Densification and grain growth behaviors of ITO ceramics were investigated as a function of TiO2 ad-ditions. TiO2 addition led to inhibition of the grain growth and promotion of the densification of ITO ceram-ics. From the microstructure observation it was found that the crack-like voids which were formed in pure ITO specimens decreased with increase of TiO2 additon. The grain growth exponent(n) was measur-ed to be 4 for pure ITO 3 for TiO2-doped ITO specimens respectively. It was supposed that the grain boun-dary migration of pure ITO ceramics was controlled by the pores which were moved by surface diffusion. On the contrary the grain boundary migration of TiO2-doped ITO specimens was depressed by solute drag effect. The activation energies for grain growth were measured to be 1013 kJ/mol for pure ITO ceramics and 460kJ/mol for TiO2-doped ITO specimens respectively.

  • An aerodynamic design method has been developed by using a three-dimensional unstructured Euler code and an adjoint code with a discrete approach. The resulting adjoint code is applied to a wing design problem of super-sonic transport with a wing-body-nacelle configuration. Hicks-Henne shape functions are adopted far the surface geometry perturbation, and the elliptic equation method is employed fer the interior grid modification during the design process. Interior grid sensitivities are neglected except those for design parameters associated with nacelle translation. The Sequential Quadratic Programming method is used to minimize the drag with constraints on the lift and airfoil thickness. Successful design results confirm validity and efficiency of the present design method.

  • The unsteady, two-dimensional laminar flow and heat transfer of an incompressible, constant-property fluid flowing around a circular cylinder are numerically analyzed. The Navier-Strokes equation and the energy equation are solved by the finite difference method. The range of the Reynolds number is 10 to 100 and the Prandtl number considered is 0.7. The contours of the flow pattern, equi-vorticity line and isotherm pattern around a circular cylinder are shown. Also, numerical solutions of the surface vorticity, pressure coefficient, drag coefficient, local Nusselt number and mean Nusselt number are obtained. The numerical results for the final time fo calculation are compared with the other available experimental and theoretical results for the steady state and are found to be in good agreement with them.

  • In order to improve the stall characteristics of the Wells turbine blade, experimental investigations have been made in the performance of the Wells turbine with 1), 2) grooved blade surface to reduce fraction drag against the steady and the sinusoidal flow condition. As the conclusion, the two methods are valid to improve the stall characteristics of the Wells turbine.

  • The possibility of skin friction reduction in laminar channel flow is investigated when the flow is subjected to stationary distributed surface blowing and suction. Blowing and suction provided at the channel walls is steady in time but varies as a sine function along the streamwise direction. The skin friction changes depending on the wavelength and amplitude of the actuation. Especially, the skin friction is reduced below that of fully developed laminar flow as the wavelength decreases and amplitude increases. The optimal wavelength of producing minimum skin friction is $\pi/2{\delta}$, where $\delta$ is the channel half-height It is observed that the distributed blowing and suction induces strong negative Reynolds shear stress in the near-wall region at the end of the suction part.

  • In this paper, incompressible two-dimensional Navier-Stokes equations are numerically solved for the study of steady laminar flow around a body with the wall effect. A second-order finite difference method is used for the spatial discretization on the nonstaggered grid system and the 4-stage Runge-Kutta scheme for the numerical integration in time. The pressure field is obtained by solving the pressure-Poisson equation with the Neumann boundary condition. To investigate the wall effect, numerical computations are carried out for the NACA 0012 section at the various blockage ratios. The pressure and skin friction on the foil surface, velocity pronto in its wake and drag coefficient are investigated as functions of the blockage ratio.

  • The near wake of square section cylinders with different corner radii is studied by numerical method to investigate the influence of corner radius. Eight models, R/D=0, 0.05, 0.1, 0.15, 0.2, 0.3, 0.4, 0.5 (R is the corner radius and D is the characteristic dimension of the body) at Re=500 were studied. The numerical results of St, CD and CL at R/D=0 and R/D=0.5 were compared with experiments to prove the feasibility and also investigate the trend of flow phenomena by the various radius corners. Results indicate that, as R/D ratio is increased, the Strouha lnumber is increased, the minimum pressure point on the cylinder surface moved own stream. The calculated results shows that between R/D=0.15 to R/D=0.3 have CD and CL.

  • Many active and passive flow control methods have been studied since decades, but there are only few works about flow control methods using ion wind. This paper presents an experimental study on the wake control behind a circular cylinder using ion wind, a bulk motion of neutral molecules driven by locally ionized air of corona discharge. Experiments are done f3r different electrohydrodynamic numbers - the ratio of an electrical body farce to a fluid Inertial force - from 0 to 2 and for the Reynolds number ranging from $4{\times}10^3\;to\;8{\times}10^3$. Pressure distributions over a cylinder surface are measured and flow visualizations are carried out by smoke wire method. Flow visualizations confirm that ion wind affects significantly the wake structure behind a circular cylinder and pressure drag could be dramatically reduced by the superimposing ion wind.

  • Microcontamination caused by particle deposition on the head disk interface threatens the reliability of hard disk drive. Design of slider rail to control contamination becomes an important issue in magnetic recording. In this paper, how particles adhere to the slider and the disk is examined. To investigate accumulation mechanism of the particles, trajectory of the particles in a slider/disk interface is simulated with considering various forces including drag force, gravitational force, Saffman lift force, and electrostatic force. It is found that the charged particles can easily adhere to the slider or disk surface, if an electric field exists between the slider and the disk. It is supposed that the vertical motion of the particles should be related with not only Saffman force but also electrostatic force.
