  • The physicochemical properties of stainless steel fibers which were modified by oxygen plasma treatment were analyzed through microscopy and XPS analysis. The wettability of the surface of the stainless steel fiber was observed by measuring water contact angle to find out the effect of the plasma treatment time on the surface characteristics of the stainless steel fiber. In addition, in order to understand the effect of oxygen plasma treatment on the deterioration of the stainless steel fiber properties, the physical properties due to plasma treatment was investigated by measuring the weight reduction, tensile strength, elongation, tensile modulus of the stainless steel fibers according to the treatment time. As a result, the stainless steel fiber surface was etched by the oxygen plasma and the surface became more wettable by the introduction of hydrophilic functional groups. However the physical properties of the stainless steel fiber were not significantly deteriorated even if the surface of the stainless steel fiber made hydrophilic.

  • Surface treatment and chemiluminescence characteristics of the polymer film. It was studied that the Intensities and rates of treatments are in proportional to condition of the treatment, considering the results of study on treatments to polymer film with discharge and ultraviolet irradiation through the methods such as surface resistance, contact angle, dyeing method, solace ten-sion and so on. It was also studied that the said has a nice correlation with the concerned result studied by chemiluminescence. Since the chemiluminescence will enable the Investigators to grasp a eertain condition caused by quitely slight deterioration with high sensitivity, it can be also used as a way for getting an information regarding the decision for degradation-condition and life-estimating of insulation material basically related to some security matters as well as surface condition of treatments through the above method.

  • Chloride ion diffusion is the most important thing of occuring deterioration in RC structure. So it is important to decide the precise chloride ion diffusion coefficient in order to predict the durability life in RC structure. The purpose of this study is to analyze the established data, which are restricted by chloride diffusion coefficient, and to calculate chloride ion diffusion coefficient using RCPT test. To examine the prediction of the concrete structure durability by an FEM analysis and the chloride diffusion coefficient as a variable. Each surface finishing materials were effective on the increment of chloride penetration resistance, but showed a little different effect depending on the type of surface finishing material.

  • The major cause of deterioration for the bare concrete bridge decks exposed to de-icing chemicals would be chloride-induced reinforcement corrosion. Thus, in this paper, in order to predict time to corrode for concrete bridge decks on highways, the chloride concentration was measured with depth from the surface. Then, the surface chloride concentration and apparent diffusion coefficient were calculated by regression. The premature failure of bare concrete decks were mostly related with thin cover depth and poor concrete property(high permeability). The good protection of deck surface might contribute to the prolongation of the service life of bare concrete bridge decks.

  • The Surface, generated by end milling operation, is deteriorated by tool runout, vibration, friction, tool deflection, etc. Especially in cornering cut, surface accuracy is usually determined by varying cutting forces, which causes tool deflections. Cutting conditions like feed rate is usually kept constant during machining a part, which causes dimensional error in severe cutting. Cornering cut is a typical example of deterioration of surface accuracy when constant feed rate is applied. Therefore it becomes important to develop NC post processor module to determine optimal cutting conditions in various cutting situations. In this paper, cutting force is predicted in cornering cut with flat end mill and feed rate is determined by constraining constantly resultant force. Also some control characteristics of CNC machining center are evaluated.

  • As tools for machining precision components, end mills and ball end mills are widely used. For the end mills have longer cylindrical shape comparing diameter, liable to deflect and induce deterioration of surface roughness. Tool geometry parameters and cutting process have complex relations with each other. So, It is hard to determine hew to select optimal tool geometry. So, to improve the stiffness, relationship between cutting process and tool geometry must be studied. In this study, relations between grinding wheel geometry, setting condition and tool geometry are revealed. For the purpose of studying relations between each parameter, the equivalent diameter of tool has been calculated assuming tool as a simple beam. By the various cutting simulations and experiments, tool geometry and cutting process has been studied.

  • The effect of leaf dehydration process and air flow capacity of bulk curing on physical properties and composition of cured leaves was studied, respectively, during flue- curing. Cured leaves from excessive moisture during yellowing stage and those from rapid dehydration Process inevitably during later stages, tend towards lower equilibrium moisture contents, higher shatter index, hither protein nitrogen, and leaf scalding or deterioration of Beaves with redish cast. Early dehydration at the yellowing stage re suited in increasing of p Bamitic, stearic, linoleic, and linolenic acid contents, but showed reduction of brightness difference between upper and lower surface of the cured leaves, Leaf surface lipid decreased with the progress of curing stages, more conspicuously during later stage. Lowering air flow capacity of fan by 50oye during stem drying stage resulted in increasing of leaf surface lipid and 25oye decreasing of electric power consumption , but curing period and kerosene consumption were not affected.

  • In these days, the deterioration of bridges make it necessary for decks to be replaced and it is inevitable to apply the precast decks to minimize the traffic control induced from the deck placement. This precast deck construction makes the physically discontinuous interface between old and new concrete. Usually, the adhesive force at this interface are ignored. However, for crack behavior and reliable long term behavior, it is required to evaluate the exact value of the cohesive force at the interface. This research investigates the cohesive characteristics at the interface. Four different interface surface conditions are tested and three different methods are used to measure the cohesive strength at the interface. In addition, cohesive characteristic at the surface between precast panels are investigated with different interface surface conditions.

  • The corrosion of materials exposed to high temperature helium in a very high temperature reactor is caused by interaction with the impurities in the helium. This interaction then induces high temperature mechanical deterioration. By considering the effect of the impurity concentration on material corrosion, a long-term coolant chemistry guideline can be determined for the range of impurity concentration at which the material is stable for a long time. In this work, surface reactions were investigated by analyzing the thermodynamics and the experimental results for Alloy 617 exposed to controlled impure helium at $950^{\circ}C$. Moreover, the surfaces were examined for the Alloy 617 crept in air and in uncontrolled helium, which was explained by possible surface reactions.

  • All most of floors can become less slip resistant with wear. The deterioration of slip resistance can often occur rapidly. So relatively new products can become hazardous within a short period of time. The main objective of this study was the comparison of slip resistance variations caused by traffic wear and accelerative wear. The second objective was to ascertain the effect of wear, and to find out the causes of slip resistance change. Although statistical differences were observed between results of traffic wear and accelerative wear, the trend of the variations of slip resistance caused by traffic wear and accelerative wear was very similar. The measured slip resistance of tested floor changed up to 29%(and 26.5%) after 100,000 steps(and 750 cycles). As the traffic wear and accelerative wear were progressed, the surface roughness of the tested floor became smoother, and so the floor became more slippery under the wet condition. The abraded(worn out) floor surface tended to become hydrophilic surface, while the new floor surface tended to show hydrophobic nature. This phenomenon would change the wettability of floor surface, and the wettability would affect the variation of slip resistance.
