Objectives: The purpose of this study was to analyze the effects of microbe inspections on the hygienic improvement of school food service systems. Methods: Thirty-three school food service systems in Incheon metropolitan city participated in the study from Sep. 2004 to Apr. 2005. Major items of microbe inspections were cutting boards, knives, kitchen towels, and kitchen staff's hands. The Rodac plate and hand plate were used to measure the surface contamination level of germs such as Staphylococcus aureus, Vibrio species, Salmonella species and E. coli. Results: This study compared the results of the inspections in Sep. 2004 and Apr. 2005. The surface contamination level of Staphylococcus aureus and Vibrio species on the knives and kitchen towels had significantly improved. However, the surface contamination level of E. coli on the hands of the kitchen staff had worsened. Conclusions: This study showed that microbe inspections could control the hygienic level of the school food service systems. In the future, microbe inspections should be actively used to improve sanitary conditions in the school lunch system.
In these days, the silicone insulators have been increasingly studied and applied for outdoor insulators because it has superior characteristics than porcelain and glass insulators, which have been used for outdoor insulators. First of all, The excellent performance of the silicone rubber in polluted and wet conditions is attributed to the ability of the material to maintain the hydrophobicity of the surface in the presence of severe contamination and wet conditions. This is because of the presence of low molecular weight mobile fluid in the silicone rubber which diffuses to the surface and to above the contamination layer. But, the leakage current and some surface discharge occurs on surface of the composite polymeric insulation materials when the insulator is used for a long time with severe contaminative condition and it can lead the contamination flashover. So the leakage current and the discharge current are important to estimate the condition of the silicone rubber surface. In this paper, the average leakage current, the relation of surface discharge current and phase angle were study to investigate electrical conduction of silicone rubber surface with the salt fog condition.
At Present, 200mm wafer technology is being applied for commercial fabrications of 64, 128, and 256 M DRAM devices, and 300mm technology will be evolved for 1G DRAM devices in the early 21th century, recognizing limitations of several process technologies. In particular recognition has been realized in harmful effects of surface contamination of trace metals introduced during devicing processes. Such a guide line for surface metal contamination has been proposed as 1E9 and 1E10 atoms/$\textrm{cm}^2$ of individual metal contamination for wafering and devicing of 1G DRAM, respectively, and so its measurement limit should be at least 1E8 atoms/$\textrm{cm}^2$. The detection limit of present measurement systems is 2E9 atoms/$\textrm{cm}^2$ obtainable with TRXFA(Total Reflection X-Ray Fluorescence Analysis). TRXFA is nondestructive and the simplest in terms of operation, and it maps the whole wafer surfaces but needs detection improvement. X-Ray intensity produced with synchrotron accelerator is much higher than that of conventional X-ray sources by order of 4-5 magnitudes. Hence theoretically its reactivity with silicon surfaces is expected to be much higher than the conventional one, realizing improvement of detection limit. X-ray produced with synchrotron accelerator is illuminated at a very low angle with silicon wafer surfaces such as 0.1 degree and reflects totally. Hence informations only from surface can be collected and utilized without overlapping with bulk informations. This study shows the total reflection phenomenon and quantitative improvement of detection limit for metallic contamination. It is confirmed that synchrotron X-ray can be a very promising alternative for realizing improvement of detection limit for the next generation devices.
The corrosion resistance of epoxy-coated carbon steel was evaluated. The carbon steel surface was subjected to different treatment methods such as steel grit blasting and power tool treatment as well as contamination of water soluble salt. To study the effect of the surface treatments and contamination, the topology of the treated surface was observed by confocal microscopy and a pull-off adhesion test was conducted. The corrosion resistance of the epoxy-coated carbon steel was further examined by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) combined with immersion test of 3.5 wt% of NaCl solution. Consequently, the surface contamination by sodium chloride with $16mg/m^2$, $48mg/m^2$ and $96mg/m^2$ didn't affect the adhesion strength for current epoxy coated carbon steel and blister and rust were not observed on the surface of epoxy coating contaminated by various concentration of sodium chloride after 20 weeks of immersion in 3.5 wt% NaCl aqueous solutions. In addition, the results of EIS test showed that the epoxy-coated carbon steel treated with steel grit blasting and power tool showed similar corrosion protection performance and surface cleanness such as Sa 3 and Sa 2.5 didn't affect the corrosion protectiveness of epoxy coated carbon steel.
This paper presents on contamination performance of polymeric outdoor insulator with different contaminant accumulation. The ESDD (equivalent salt deposit density), tracking resistance and clean-fog test were performed to investigate the characteristics of contamination performance on polymeric outdoor insulator. Furthermore, we evaluated together with the porcelain samples for its comparison. It is found that ESDD of polymeric and porcelain insulator depends on the installation position. This surface accumulation of contaminant lead to the loss of surface hydrophobicity, expecially upper shed part of polymeric insulator. In addition, the effect of an artificial contaminant on the tracking resistance by inclined-plane method and leakage suppression ability under clean fog was surveyed. The time of tracking failure did not appear to change significantly with a much contaminant accumulation, while leakage current under clean-fog increased.
A large amount of research has been performed on the rolling contact fatigue(RCF) life of bearings, since it directly affects the safety and reliability of mechanical systems. It is well known that rolling contact fatigue life is influenced by several parameters including contact pressure, oil contamination by water or metal particles, and the surface conditions of bearings. However, the detailed damage mechanisms involved in rolling contact fatigue have not been clearly identified yet. In this paper the effects of water contamination of the lubricant and surface roughness of bearing steel on the rolling contact fatigue life were investigated. Two types of specimens with different surface roughness values were prepared through turning and lapping operations. They were tested under two different lubrication conditions, i.e. oil lubricant with 100% of oil and the water contaminated condition with 80% of oil and 20% of water using the rolling contact fatigue testing machine. The surface damage induced by the rolling contact fatigue was observed by using atomic force microscope(AFM). Experimental results show that the rolling contact fatigue life, $L_{10}$ was reduced by 24 to 33% depending on the lubrication condition. The reduction of fatigue life in the range of 53 to 57% was also observed at different surface roughness conditions.
The application of HACCP system, which was adopted by Codex Alimentarius Committee for the safe meat and poultry production, is one of the urgent task for competing in the world trade markets. But there have been no useful analytical studies to identify the causes of contamination in the poultry meat processing plants in Korea. This study was conducted to investigate the potential hazards during the operations by the microbiological examination for the poultry meat processing plant (20,000 birds capacity a day) located in Kangwon province. In spite of air contamination of work places, it may not directly affect the surface contamination of poultry meats. But the risk of Campylobacter jejuni/coli contamination was high. The number of total count was decreased about ten times, but remarkable changes of microbial contamination could not be recognized in each procedure during the operations. The washing water was already contaminated as much as $10^{3-6}CFU/ml$ in SPC before the operations. It means that to keep water tanks hygienic is a primary step to prevent the occurrences of microbial contamination. The overflow and recirculation of water in scalding, washing, and chilling was aslo an important factor for a hygienic control. Based on this study, the followings could be regarded as an important factors for hygenic control in the poultry slaughtering plants on a small scale. The temperature of water used for scalding should be constantly maintained on a required temperature, and the overflow rate of 1~1.5 liter per bird. The carcass surface and the body cavity should be washed thoroughly and the cross-contamination due to facilities, workers, and tools should be prevented. The chilling water sholud be maintained under 5$\circ$C of temperature with ice and overflow, and residual chlorine level of 50 ppm.
The safety concern of slipping on floors in South Korea has come to the fore as a social problem, but the occurrence of such accidents has not decreased. Slip and fall accidents have several causes, but they are especially common when there is soapy water on the floor during a shower or a bath. Despite this situation, it can be said that there is a lack of standards on surface contamination materials used in floor slip resistance testing. Therefore, in this study, we conducted a survey to identify the components and quantity of soapy water that actually results from a user taking a shower, and the standardization of contamination materials. Based on the results of this experiment, we provide a surface contamination material that can replace the soapy water used in floor slip resistance testing.
The purpose of this study was to identity the probability of cross-contamination from the environment. For this, we examined foodservices at 20 universities/colleges for microbiological analysis of their working facilities and environment as well as their preventive equipment against cross-contamination. Seventy percent of the 20 foodservices were found to maintain one unified working area, which suggests high probability of contamination of food/utensils/equipment in the cooking area by pre-preparation or dish washing. According to the microbiological analysis, the hygiene acceptance ratio of working facilities in the clean zone was 70%, which was higher than the average 45% hygiene acceptance ratio of working facilities in the contamination operating zone. There was a significant difference in the total plate count (P<0.001) and coliform count (P<0.01), which demonstrates that work tables in the clean zone were in a good state compared to those in the contamination operating zone. In the contamination operating zone, refrigerator shelves had a high probability of cross-contamination. Regarding the floor surface and airborne microbes, cooking areas which should be maintained as clean zones had higher cross-contamination probability than those in the contamination operating zone. So corrective actions such as cleaning and sanitizing, keeping dry floors, lowered temperature and humidity, shoe disinfecting facilities, and checking concentrations, are necessary to manage floor surfaces and airborne microbes in the cooking area.
Autopolymerising and visible light cured resin are used to reline dentures. But relined surface are easily contaminated by water or saliva in the mouth during clinical procedure. This study was to find out the effect of surface contamination on the transverse strength of the relined denture base. To accomplish this, the specimens of $65\times10\times3mm$ were made with heat-cured(Lucitone 199), visible light-cured(Triad), and autopolymerizing resin(Kooliner). Measurements of transverse strength were taken for each specimen. Specimens made of heat-cured resins, sizing $65\times10\times1.5mm$, were relined with heat-cured, light-cured, and autopolymerizing resin, respectively. Specimens relined with autopolymerizing and light-cured resins were further classified into not-contaminated, water-contaminated and saliva-contaminated groups. Again, measurements of the transverse strength were taken for each group. The results were as follows 1. The transverse strength of heat-cured resin was superior to all the other resins. 2. The transverse strength of each specimen decreased after relining in the following order, heat-cured, visible light-cured, and autopolymerizing resin. 3. Surface contamination produced an decrease in transverse strength, especially in the saliva contaminated group. According to these results, water or saliva contamination should be avoided during intraoral relining procedures.
