  • In load sharing model, the load is supported by the contacting asperities and the lubricants. The asperity contact area of two sliding surfaces are relatively very small as compared with the apparent contact area. The asperity contact pressure is relatively higher than the lubricant pressure. With the combined effect of asperity and lubricant pressure, the surface roughness and temperature rise must be considered to calculate the lubricant film thickness of the line-contact bearing.

  • The roughness effects are very important due to the presence of interacting asperities in mixed lubrication regime. An average Reynolds equation using flow factors is useful to determine the effects of surface roughness on mixed lubrication. In this study, the effect of kurtosis on flow factors is investigated using random rough surfaces generated numerically, The results show that flow factors are very sensitive to h/$\sigma$ according to the value of kurtosis in the partial lubrication regime.

  • The friction anisotropy of shear resistance can be selectively used in geo-structures. For example, larger axially loaded deep foundation, soil nails, and tiebacks increase load carrying capacity due to induced large shear resistance while pile penetration and soil sampling produce minimal shear resistance. Previous studies confirmed direction-dependent shear resistance induced by interface between soil and surface asperity of plate inspired by geometrical shape of snake scale. The aim of this paper is to quantitatively evaluate interface friction angle with different surface asperities. Using the modified direct shear test, a total of 51 cases, which sand are prepared at the relative density of 40%, are conduced including 9 plates, two shear direction (shearing direction against the height of surface asperity is increased or decreased during shearing test), and three initial vertical stress (100 kPa, 200 kPa, 300 kPa). Experimental results show that shear stress is increased with higher height of surface asperity, shorter length of surface asperity, and the shearing direction that the height of surface asperity increases. Also, interface friction angle is decreased with larger surface asperity ratio, and shearing direction with increasing height of surface asperity produces larger interface friction angle regardless of the surface asperity ratio.

  • The roughness of rock joint is one of the most important parameters in developing the shear resistance and the tendency of dilation. Due to the damage accumulated with shearing displacement, the roughness angle is lowered continuously. It is known that dilation, shear strength hardening, and softening are directly related to the degradation of asperities. Much effort has been directed to incorporate the complicated damage mechanism of asperities into a constitutive model fur rock joints. This study presents an elasto-plastic formulation of joint behavior including elastic deformability, dilatancy and asperity surface damage. It is postulated that the plastic portion of incremental displacement 7an be decomposed into contributions from both sliding along the asperity surface and damage of asperity. Numerical cyclic shear tests are presented to illustrate th? performance of the derived incremental stress-displacement relation. A laboratory cyclic shear test is also simulated. Numerical examples reveal that the elasto-plastic joints model is promising.

  • In this paper, the frictional behavior according to the contact geometry was investigated using a micro-tribotester built inside a Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) and an Atomic Force Microscope (AFM). FFT (Fast Fourier Transform) analysis for friction was conducted as a method to interpret the contact condition. From the experimental results, it could be concluded that the relative dimensions and distribution of contact asperities on the surface could be predicted by the power spectrum and main frequency in the FFT analysis of the friction signal.

  • This paper investigated the wetting and adhesion property of undulated DLC film with surface morphology controlled for a reduced real area of contact. The undulated DLC Films were prepared by 13.56 MHZ radio frequency plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition (r.f. PECVD) by using nanoscale Cu dots surface on a Si (100) substrate. FE-SEM, AFM analysis showed that the after repeated deposition and plasma induced damage with Ar ions, the surface was nanoscale undulated. This phenomenon changed the surface morphology of DLC surface. Raman spectra of film with changed morphology revealed that the plasma induced damage with Ar ions significantly suppressed the graphitization of DLC structure. Also, it was observed that while the untreated flat DLC surfaces had wetting angle starting ranged from $72^{\circ}$ and adhesion force of 333ni. Had wetting angle the undulated DLC surfaces, which resemble the surface morphology of a cylindrical shape, increased up to $104^{\circ}$ and adhesion force decreased down to 11 nN. The measurements agree with Hertz and JKR models. The surface undulation was affected mainly by several factors: the surface morphology affinity to cylindrical shape, reduction of the real area of contact and air pockets trapped in cylindrical asperities of the surface.
