  • In this paper, a series of numerical analyses on soft clay ground improved by PVD were carried out, in order to investigate the consolidation promotion effect considering PVD width and surcharge pressure. In the numerical analyses, an elasto-viscoplastic three-dimensional consolidation finite element method was applied, in which the applicability of numerical analyses could be confirmed comparing with consolidation behavior simulated at the laboratory. And, through the results of the numerical analyses, consolidation behaviors of soft clay ground with elapsed time was elucidated, together with the effects of PVD width and surcharge pressure.

  • The vertical pressure due to soil prism load and surface surcharge load acts on buried pipe, and occasionally uplifting force due to earthquake or differential settlement acts on it. In this paper, study was performed to estimate the pressure acting on the buried pipe due to soil prism load through analyzing Marston-Spangler theory by new method. And loading tests on the buried flexible pipe were performed to study on the response of the pipe due to surface surcharge load. Also, through the estimation of uplifting resistance theory and uplifting test for buried pipe, the method to determine the maximum uplifting resistance of buried pipe was proposed.

  • Urban sewer systems are designed to operate in open-channel flow regime and energy loss at circular manholes are usually not significant. However, the energy loss at manholes, often exceeding the friction loss of pipes under surcharge flow, is considered as one of the major causes of inundation in urban area. Therefore, it is necessary to analyze the head loss associated with manholes, especially in surcharge flow. Hydraulic experimental apparatus with two circular manholes was installed for this study. The range of the experimental discharges were from $1.0\ell/sec$ to $4.4\ell/sec$. Head loss coefficient was maximum because of strong oscillation of water surface when the range of manhole depth ratios$(h_m/D_{in})$ were from 1,2 to 1.25. The average head loss coefficients for upstream manhole and downstream manhole were 0.58 and 0.23 respectively. Head loss at upstream manhole is nearly 2.5 times more than one at downstream manhole.

  • Underground structures will be affected by the additional surcharge loads such as traffic load et al. Terzaghi (1956) suggested the equation on the influences of surcharge loads in vertically backfilled spaces. In field, the shapes of backfill spaces are not always formed vertically. Then the Terzagi (1956) equation is not suitable to use because of boundary condition. This study suggests equation to calculate the stress in backfilled space caused by surcharge loads when the backfilled space is sloped symmetrically. The suggested equation is verified by carbon box test and numerical analysis. The experimental results show good agreement with the suggested equation but the numerical analysis result shows a little disagreement. The differences are estimated to be caused by the fact that ground made by carbon rod has become more dense and internal frction and wall friction has increased itself as surcharge load is added but that this increase can not be considered in the numerical analysis. The suggested equation shows good agreement with Terzaghi (1956) equation in case of sloped backfill ground. According to the results, it is considered that the suggested equation can be applied not only to sloped space but also to vertical space. Further investigation using full scale experiment is needed.

  • A ground treatment work for Hongkong container terminal yard is reported as a case study of site formation work with full dredging and replacement method. Ground treatment work adopting surcharge and deep compaction (vibroflotation) were applied to improve the sand creep potential. The sand creep parameter of 0 25% was assumed in design stage and improved up to 0.05% and 0.02% after surcharge and deep compaction respectively

  • The structure such as underground external walls of buildings, conduit and box culvert supports the surcharge loads (point, strip and line loads) . The vertical and horizontal stresses in a soil mass depend on the backfill width and wall friction, etc. The investigations described in this paper is designed to identify the magnitude and the distributions of the lateral and vertical pressure which is occurred by the narrowly backfilled soil in an open cut by the surcharge loads. For these purposes, model tests were performed for various width of backfill in a model test box by considering the wall friction using carbon rods. The results of test were compared with the theories of Weissenbach and VS Army Code and also with the results of the numerical analysis using finite difference method which introduces Mohr-Coulomb failure hypothesis.

  • This paper describes the results of model experiments in the laboratory, which were conducted to assess the behavior characteristics of geosynthetic reinforced soil walls according to different surcharge loads and reinforcement types. The model walls were built in the box having dimension, 100 cm tall, 140 cm long, and 100cm wide. Three types of geosynthetics, geonet, geogrid A and geogrid B, are used as the reinforcements. Decomposed granite soil (SM) was used as a backfill material. Seven model walls are constructed and tested. After the construction of the model wall, the LVDTs are installed to obtain the displacements of the wall face. As the results of the model tests, the maximum horizontal displacements of the model walls occurred due to uniform surcharge pressure were measured at the 0.7H from the bottom of the wall. The more the reinforcement strength increases, the more the wall displacements decrease, and also the reduction ratio of the wall displacement decrease with increasing the surcharge pressure.

  • When soft soils are effected by unsymmetrical surcharge due to embankement and abutements of a bridge, large plastic sheraring deformations such as settlements, lateral displacements, upheavals and sliding shearing failure in the soils occurred and they have often damaged considerabily to the soils and structure. This study examines the existing theoretical background for the behavior of the displacement of soils by unsymmetrical surcharge on the soft soils and compares the analytical results to the actual measurements performed through the model test. The procedures of model test are that a model stock device is made and soft soils are filled in a container which fixes the soils. Then the displacements observed when surcharge load increa ses by regular interval at undrainage condition. It analyzes the relation of soil characteristics to displacement, critical surcharge and ultimate bearing capadty, condition of plastic flow and lateral flow pressure, comparing them with the existing theories. Understanding the causes of lateral displacement in soft soils due to unsymmetrical surchages will prevent a damage in advance.

  • This study presents an analytical method of estimating the developed horizontal active thrusts against GRS-RW( Geosynthetic Reinforced Soil Retaining Wall) system adapted to the case of distanced surcharge. In addition, the design charts that could be used for preliminary design of GRS-RW system are presented. The proposed method of analysis uses two body translation mechanism as well as force polygon concept. taking into account the effect of facing's rigidity. Besides. the effect of tension cracks in c-\Phi$ soils, seismic effects and horizontal distance from the back face of wall to uniformly distributed surcharge loadings are also included. The results of horizontal active thrusts obtained from the developed method of analysis are compared with those from Jarquio's modified Boussinesq equation.
