  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify the influencing factors on anxiety of patients who had received hemopoietic stem cell transplantation(HSCT). Method: A total of 81 patients who had undergone a HSCT at a university hospital were recruited from July of 2001 to June of 2002. They were asked to complete questionnaires about anxiety, self-esteem, family support, doctor's support and nurse's support. Result: The mean score of anxiety, self-esteem, family support, doctor's support and nurse's support was 41.9, 3.0, 4.6, 7.6 and 7.3, respectively. A significant negative correlation was found between anxiety and self-esteem. Self-esteem was positively correlated with family support, doctor's support and nurse's support. The major variable that influenced anxiety was the self-esteem, explaining 25.4% of the anxiety. Conclusion: On the basis of these results, it is necessary for HSCT patients to develop a nursing intervention for the enhancement of self esteem. Also, family support, doctor's support and nurse's support should be considered as a main support system in the nursing strategy for improving the quality of life of patients undergone HSCT.

  • The aims of this study are to investigate the impact of the experience of exposure to domestic violence(witnessed interparental conjugal violence and child abuse) on mental health among college students, and to explore whether social support acts as a moderator between domestic violence and mental health. Through this process, I intended to provide a reference base to suggest substantial interventions for family welfare by helping students to overcome negative domestic violence exposure experiences and adapt as healthy members of society. To achieve this goal, the study established a conceptual framework by considering the mental health of adolescents with domestic-violence exposure experience as a dependent variable, domestic violence exposure experience (witnessed interparental conjugal violence and child abuse) as an independent variable, and social support as a moderator of the relationship between these two variables. The subjects composed 747 college students in 8 colleges in Seoul. The main summary of this study is as follows: First, according to the analysis of domestic-violence exposure experience, all the subjects of this study had substantial experience of violence at home and witnessed interparental conjugal violence. These students scored 3.83 points in social support, higher than the median of 3, implying that these students had a higher awareness of social support. Moreover, their mental health score was 3.50 points, which is higher than the median of 3, indicating a somewhat positive tendency toward mental health. Second, to explore the moderating effects of social support between child violence experience and mental health, gender, age, financial status, academic-performance, child abuse and social support were input in the first step, and then buffering effects were examined by entering an interaction term to the first step in the second step. There was a significant interaction between social support and mental health. Therefore, social support was identified as having moderating effects on the relationship between child violence and mental health. Third, the analysis of moderating effects of social support between witnessed interparental conjugal violence and mental health revealed that social support had a positive influence on mental health in the first step. By contrast, the interaction term of witnessed interparental conjugal violence and social support showed no significance, indicating no moderating effect of social support in the second step. To sum up, social support served as a moderator for mental health among college students with child abuse experience, but had no moderating effect on witnessed interparental conjugal violence experience.

  • This study explored the relationship between peer support, strategies used to cope with interpersonal stressors, and social skills among 4th and 5th graders. Instruments were the Social Support Appraisal Scale, the Self-Report Coping Scale, and the Teenage Inventory of Social Skills. Results showed that children used different coping strategies by the level of peer support. Children with more peer support were more active in seeking social support and in solving peer conflict. Children with more problems in peer relationships used more avoidance strategies such as internalization and externalization. Children with a high level of social skills were more likely to use approach strategies in peer conflict while children with a low level of social skills were more likely to employ avoidance strategies. Internalization was the most important strategy in explaining inappropriate peer relationships. For girls, social skill was the most essential variable in their peer relationships.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the mediating role of self-worth in the relationship between social support and depressive symptoms. Seven hundred and thirty-eight 5th and 6th graders in Seoul completed questionnaires. Path analysis demonstrated that social support had a significant direct effect on depressive symptoms. This analysis also revealed that social support influenced depressive symptoms through self-worth. These findings suggest that the relationship between perceived social support and depressive symptoms in children is partially mediated through a personal variable like self-worth.

  • This research has analyzed the differentiated influence of organizational variables(an organization's learning culture and organizational support networks) and personal variables(the individual's motivation to learn and self-efficacy) on the process of gaining and using of knowledge. These two variables have been regarded as the major variables for the successful learning of 6Sigma, according to Social Cognitive Theory. In addition, this research has proven the role structure of the abovementioned two variables through a suitable methodology(Hierarchical Linear Model). In regard to this methodology, the different hierarchical level of the personal variable and organizational variable was especially focused on, and the effect of interaction between the high level and the low level was considered in detail. Considering the current situation, in that the importance of organizational factor and personal factor has been emphasized but the accurate role of each variable has not been verified, the research model is thought to help to establish an effective strategy to implement 6 Sigma.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between parent's conflict, paternal/ maternal grandmother's psychological support and school-aged children's well-being. The subjects were 227 6th grade school-aged children in elementary school who were 128(56.4%) boys and 99(43.6%) girls. Instruments used in this research were CDI(Children's Depression Inventory), CPIC(The children's perception of interparental conflict scale), and psychological support scale. The data were analyzed by simple regression, standard multiple regression and hierarchical multiple regression(using SPSS 12.1). Major findings were as follows: (1) There was no difference in maternal grandmother's psychological support and paternal grandmother's psychological support. (2) Maternal grandmother's psychological support was more important variable affecting school-aged children's well-being than paternal grandmother's psychological support. (3) Paternal/maternal grandmother's psychological support operated as a main effect with school-aged children's well-being increasing as paternal/maternal grandmother's psychological support increased. There were not interaction effects of parent's conflict and paternal/maternal grandmother's psychological support on school-aged children's well-being. That result showed that paternal/maternal grandmother's psychological support did not moderate negative effects of parent's conflict on school-aged children's well-being.
