The differences in satisfaction with continuing education according to general characteristics were significantly different depending on age, qualification, and clinical experience, and in terms of continuing education topic needs, 'Advanced Trauma Life Support' was the highest need among all groups, and additional desired continuing education topics were the management of mentally ill patients and various field case-based education, indicating a high preference for practical topics that are helpful in emergency patient care work. Therefore, it is believed that efforts should be made to improve the operation of continuing education from various angles, taking into account the general characteristics of continuing education recipients, and improving the quality of continuing education by reflecting the needs of continuing education recipients and selecting practical topics for continuing education.

Methods: The participants of this study were 193 nurses working shifts with more than three months' clinical experience at general hospitals. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire from February 1 to 28, 2023. Nurses' Retention Index and Nurse Needs Satisfaction Scale, Korean version of the Calling and Vocational Questionnaire, Korean Occupational Stress Scale were used. Data were analyzed using SPSS/WIN 23.0 program. Independent t-test, one-way ANOVA, Pearson's correlation analysis, and hierarchical multiple regression analysis were conducted for statistical analysis. Results: Regarding nurses' shift work, the mean scores for retention intention, needs satisfaction, calling and vocation, and job stress were 32.12±9.04, 94.87±14.74, 26.95±6.84, and 66.12±10.34. Moreover, the nurses' retention intention differed significantly by age, education level, religion, marital status, clinical experience, satisfaction with wage, and job satisfaction. Furthermore, retention intention was positively correlated with needs satisfaction and calling and vocation and negatively correlated with job stress. Needs satisfaction, and calling and vocation as well as education level of bachelor's degree, job satisfaction had positive effects on shift work nurses' retention intention. Job dissatisfaction had relatively negative effects on retention intention compared to having neutral job satisfaction. Conclusion: It is necessary to develop programs that promote needs satisfaction, calling and vocation, and job satisfaction to improve nurses' retention intention in relation to shift work; moreover, institutional support for acquiring a bachelor's degree or higher is needed.

  • Nowadays, flood hazard maps have been generated to minimize the loss of human lives due to flooding domestically. To generate the flood hazard maps, LiDAR data have mainly been used to provide topographic data. The LiDAR data requires, however, relatively higher cost and processing time. Therefore, the needs of validating possible use of topographic maps as an alternative source of LiDAR, which have been already existed from the NGIS project over the nation, has been raised. In this background, this study has generated a DEM over City of Kuri as a pilot study using conventional 1:1,000 and 1:5,000 topographic maps emphasizing the linkage of river profile with breakline processing algorithm to build the essential topographic data as accurate as possible. The results showed that the RMSE from topographic maps and LiDAR were 3.49 and 2.282 meter, respectively. Further study needs to be made to decide possible use of topographic maps instead of LiDAR including more easier updating of topographic maps to support flood map generation. In addition, 1:1,000 topographic mapping, which is limited to the urban areas so far, needs to be extended to the river areas.

  • Mediation is defined most simply as facilitated negotiation. An impartial third party(the mediator) facilitates negotiations between disputants or the disputants' representatives in their search for a resolution of their dispute. The disputants remain responsible for negotiating a settlement; the mediator's role is to assist the process in ways acceptable to the disputants. Sometimes this means merely providing a forum for negotiations or convening the negotiations. More often it menas helping the disputants find areas of common ground for resolution, offering alternatives, supervising the bargaining, then drafting the final settlement. mediation can occur between two disputants seeking to resolve one issue, or among many disputants seeking to resolve several issues. The disputants can participate in mediation themselves or they can have representatives negotiate for them. Mediation most often is a voluntary process. In Korea, as mediation could not have developed for lack of people's correct understanding on it, there must be enlightenment against the people, and it needs subsidiary from government and support from lawers. In order for the lawers to accomplish their role in progressing mediation procedure favorably, they should study and develope on the skill on mediate the case. Furthermore through the good mediation system, it also needs to induce the parties to participate in mediation procedure voluntarily. On the other hand, It also needs to bring up and develope the ADR institution to proceed the mediation impartially and effectively, and let them improve the mediation systems, like the Korean Commercial Arbitration Board.

  • This article describes the current status of site-based environmental education (EE) in the Republic of Korea. Implications for site-based EE program development and operation are presented and recommendations for an improvement are provided. Questionnaires were mailed to 205 schools and organizations where site-based EE programs operated in 2002 with funding from the Korean Ministry of Environment. The questionnaire was designed and used to examine the scope, operation, and needs of site-based EE programs. The response rate was 27.3%. The results of the survey indicated that 'awareness', 'participation', and 'attitude' were addressed by the program goals and objectives more than 'knowledge' and 'skills'. The survey also indicated that activities in the programs were not variable and most were teacher/instructor-centered. Most of the programs reflected the 'connection with everyday life, direct experience and sensitivity'. There were some difficulties in motivating students and finding a good location and qualified instructional staff. Needs included well-designed program development and dissemination, professional development, increased funding support, and more effective program evaluation.

  • Background: Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is the most common primary liver cancer and the third leading cause of cancer-related death worldwide due to its generally poor prognosis. Caregiver burden for liver cancer cases is higher than with other cancer and needs especial attention. Methods: To explore the experiences of families of patients with newly diagnosed advanced terminal stage hepatocellular cancer by interview. Results: Nine participants were recruited in this study. Content analysis of the interviews revealed four themes: blaming oneself, disrupting the pace of life, searching all possible regimens, and not letting go. Conclusions: This study provides new insight into the needs and support of family members especially when they are facing loved ones with newly diagnosed advanced terminal stage HCC. These results will inform future supportive care service development and intervention research aimed at providing assistance in reducing unmet supportive care needs and psychological distress of these family members.
