An Evaluation of Residual Stress Redistribution in the Welding Residual Stress Field Caused by Fatigue Crack Propagation by Finite Element Method (용접잔류응력장에서 피로균열의 전파에 따른 잔류응력 재분포에 대한 해석적 평가)

  • An investigation was performed to predict residual stress redistribution for the crack propagation initially through tensile residual stress field. The analytical method, which is based on Dugdale model by finite element analysis using elastic analysis method considering the superposition principle, was proposed to estimate the redistribution of residual stress caused by crack propagation. The various aspect of distribution of residual stress caused by crack propagation was examined based on the configuration change of specimen. The analysis results show that the aspect of redistribution of residual stress caused by crack propagation depends on the width of the specimen provided that the initial distribution of residual stress is identical.

Comparison of model order reductions using Krylov and modal vectors for transient analysis under seismic loading

  • Generally, it is necessary to perform transient structural analysis in order to verify and improve the seismic performance of high-rise buildings and bridges against earthquake loads. In this paper, we propose the model order reduction (MOR) method using the Krylov vectors to perform seismic analysis for linear and elastic systems in an efficient way. We then compared the proposed method with the mode superposition method (MSM) by using the limited numbers of modal vectors (or eigenvectors) calculated from the modal analysis. In the calculation, the data of the El Centro earthquake in 1940 were adopted for the seismic loading in the transient analysis. The numerical accuracy and efficiency of the two methods were compared in detail in the case of a simplified high-rise building.

  • A fabrication method of long--period fiber gratings (LPFGs) that can be easily controlled resonance wavelength and losses is introduced. We used the superposition method that core and cladding diameter are modulated by applying a number of small electric-arc to the normal fiber. We derived an equation of resonance wavelength change according to core diameter variation using the phase matching condition and showed the results are well matched with experiments. The measured resonant wavelengths of arc-induced superposition LPFGs according to grating period are well coincident with that of phase matching condition. The resonance wavelength is measured for the temperature changes and a slight mechanical strength degradation of arc-induced LPFGs is observed by increasing arc times.

  • As the results of comparison with several anchorage design methods of PSC box girder, stress superposition effect by the order of prestressing force can't be considered in the case of multi-anchorage design with existing design methods. In anchorage design by 3-D finite element analysis, estimation of stress concentration region and stress flow are correctly defined, but the estimation of sectional forces in anchorage is very complicated. In the case of anchorage design by strut-tie model method, the stress superposition effect can be considered and sectional forces in anchorage are easily calculated. Therefore, strut-tie model method is remarkably suitable to anchorage design if geometrical conditions of the truss members are carefully considered.

Dynamic Response Analysis of Top-tensioned Riser Under Sheared Current Load (전단류 하중을 받는 상부장력 라이저의 동적 응답 해석)

  • A numerical scheme based on a mode superposition method is presented for the dynamic response analysis of a top-tensioned riser (TTR) under sheared current loads. The natural frequencies and mode shapes of the TTR have been calculated analytically for a beam with a slowly varying tension and pinned-pinned boundary conditions at the top and bottom ends. The lift coefficients and corresponding amplitudes used to estimate the vortex-induced modal force and damping for each mode were predicted via iterative calculations based on the input and output power balancing concept. Here, the power-in regions were controlled by the normal distribution function, for which the center was coincident with the lock -in location by local vortex-shedding, and the range was defined by the constant standard deviation for the reduced velocity by the local current speed. Finally, dynamic responses such as root-mean-squared displacement and stress were calculated using the mode superposition technique. In order to verify the presented scheme, a numerical calculation was performed for a TTR under an arbitrary linearly sheared current and linearly varying tension. A comparison with the results of the existing software showed that the presented scheme could give reliable and feasible solutions. Case studies were performed to investigate the effects of various current loads and tensions.

Study On the Sensorless PMSM Control Using the Superposition Theory (중첩의 정리를 이용한 PMSM의 센서리스제어에 관한 연구)

  • This study presents a solution to control a Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor without sensors based on the superposition principle. Because the proposed method of sensorless theory is very simple to compute the estimated angle, computing time to estimate the angle is shorter than other sensorless method. The use of this system yields enhanced operations, fewer system components, lower system cost, energy efficient control system design and increased efficiency. The performance of a sensorless architecture allows an intelligent approach to reduce the complete system costs of the digital motion control applications using cheaper electrical motors without sensors. This paper deals with an overview of sensorless solutions in PMSM control applications whereby the focus will be on the new controller without sensors and its applications.

  • A Markov Chain Monte Carlo method with data augmentation is developed to compute the features of the posterior distribution. For each observed failure epoch, we introduced latent variables that indicates with component of the Superposition model. This data augmentation approach facilitates specification of the transitional measure in the Markov Chain. Metropolis algorithms along with Gibbs steps are proposed to preform the Bayesian inference of such models. for model determination, we explored the Pre-quential conditional predictive Ordinate(PCPO) criterion that selects the best model with the largest posterior likelihood among models using all possible subsets of the component intensity functions. To relax the monotonic intensity function assumptions, we consider in this paper Superposition of Musa-Okumoto and Erlang(2) models. A numerical example with simulated dataset is given.

Suggestion of New Method for the Prediction of Shock Vibration (충격진동 예측방법에 관한 새로운 방법 제안)

  • In case of estimating the shocking vibration during the blasting demolitions, the weight and falling height of the structure, that is a potential energy, had been considered. But, this study presented a new equation which used the impulse concerning a falling weight instead of potential energy as a method of predicting the shock vibration. In this experiment, the data of the impulse were compared with the data of the potential energy by performing the free-fall, and all data were comparatively analyzed by the regression analysis method. Also, the method of the superposition theory, which is calculated by the diminution ratio according to distance, the free-fall difference according to height, and the time giving the shock to the ground according to the breakdown pattern, was compared with the previous vibration data occurring from the blasting demolitions in the same conditions. As a result, this study suggests that the impulse and the method of superposition theory be applied as a method of predicting the shocking vibration. Therefore, these results could be expected to estimate the shocking vibration more accurately than the previous method.

Model order reduction for Campbell diagram analysis of shaft-disc-blade system in 3D finite elements

  • This paper presents the Campbell diagram analysis of the rotordynamic system using the full order model (FOM) and the reduced order model (ROM) techniques to determine the critical speeds, identify the stability and reduce the computational time. Due to the spin-speed-dependent matrices (e.g., centrifugal stiffening matrix), several model order reduction (MOR) techniques may be considered, such as the modal superposition (MS) method and the Krylov subspace-based MOR techniques (e.g., Ritz vector (RV), quasi-static Ritz vector (QSRV), multifrequency quasi-static Ritz vector (MQSRV), multifrequency/ multi-spin-speed quasi-static Ritz vector (MMQSRV) and the combined Ritz vector & modal superposition (RV+MS) methods). The proposed MMQSRV method in this study is extended from the MQSRV method by incorporating the rotational-speed-dependent stiffness matrices into the Krylov subspace during the MOR process. Thus, the objective of this note is to respond to the question of whether to use the MS method or the Krylov subspace-based MOR technique in establishing the Campbell diagram of the shaft-disc-blade assembly systems in three-dimensional (3D) finite element analysis (FEA). The Campbell diagrams produced by the FOM and various MOR methods are presented and discussed thoroughly by computing the norm of relative errors (ER). It is found that the RV and the MS methods are dominant at low and high rotating speeds, respectively. More precisely, as the spinning velocity becomes large, the calculated ER produced by the RV method is significantly increased; in contrast, the ER produced by the MS method is smaller and more consistent. From a computational point of view, the MORs have substantially reduced the time computing considerably compared to the FOM. Additionally, the verification of the 3D FE rotordynamic model is also provided and found to be in close agreement with the existing solutions.
