  • In this study, the feasibility of using vegetable oil extracted from tropical crop seed as a biodiesel feedstock was investigated by producing biodiesel and analysing the quality parameters as a transport fuel. In order to produce biodiesel efficiently, two step reaction process(pre-treatment and transesterificaion) was required because the tropical crop oil have a high content of free fatty acids. To determine the suitable acid catalyst for the pre-esterification, three kinds of acid catalysts were tested and sulfuric acid was identified as the best catalyst. After constructing the experimental matrix based on RSM and analysing the statistical data, the optimal pre-treatment conditions were determined to be 26.7% of methanol and 0.982% of sulfuric acid. Trans-esterification experiments of the pre-esterified oil based on RSM were carried out, then discovered 1.24% of KOH catalyst and 22.76% of methanol as the optimal trans-esterification conditions. However, the quantity of KOH was higher than the previously established KOH concentration of our team. So, we carried out supplemental experiment to determine the quantity of catalyst and methanol. As a result, the optimal transesterification conditions were determined to be 0.8% of KOH and 16.13% of methanol. After trans-esterification of tropical crop oil, the produced biodiesel could meet the major quality standard specifications; 100.8% of FAME, 0.45 mgKOH/g of acid value, 0.00% of water, 0.04% of total glycerol, $4.041mm^2/s$ of kinematic viscosity(at $40^{\circ}C$).

  • Chemical transformation of D-glucose to 2-keto-L-gulonic acid and L-ascorbic acid has been examined. D-Sorbitol obtained from D-glucose was microbiologically oxidized to L-sorbose by G. suboxydans in 90% yield. On treatment of L-sorbose with acetone in the presence of sulfuric acid, its diacetonide is obtained in 95% yield. This diacetonide is oxidized to the corresponding acid with nickel chloride-hypochlorite, and the acid is directly transformed to L-ascorbic acid. The over all yield of Vitamin C from D-glucose achieved is 54%.

  • For the purpose of examining the effects of simulated acid rain on the chemical properties of the experimental soil in Pinus densiflora seedlings and Forsythia koreana rooted cuttings, the experimental design of randomized block arrangement with three replications was implemented in the experimental field of Yesan National Agricultural Junior College. One-year-old Pinus densiflora seedlings and Forsythia koreana cuttings were planted in the pots filled the mixed soils (nursery soil: forest soil of siliceous sandy loam = 1 : V/V)in the early spring of 1985. The regime of artificil acid rain, in terms of spray frequency per monthly and spray amount at single treatment per plot, was simulated on the basis of climatological data averaged from 30 years records. Simulated acid rain (pH 2.0, pH4.0, and pH 5.5 as control) containing sulfuric and nitric acid in the ratio of 3:2 (chemical equivalant basis) diluted ground water, were treated on the experimental plants under condition of cutting off the natural precipitation with vinyl tunnel, during the growing season (May 1 to August 31) in 1985. THe results obtained in this study were as follows; 1. Soil acidity was dropped, and exchangeable aluminum contents in the soil was dramatically increased in both species, with decreasing pH levels of acid rain. 2. Exchangeable potassium, clacium, magnesium contents, and base saturation degree of the soil were highly drcreased in two species as the pH levels of acid rain decreased. 3. In two species, sulfate concentrations in the soil were decreased of pH 4.0 treatment, and remarkably increased at pH 2.0 treatment of acid rain in comparison with control. 4. Total nitrogen and available phosphate contents of the soil were not affected by acid rain treatment in the both species, and Fe contents at pH 2.0 treatment were highest among three acid rain treatments.

  • In this research, in order to effectively utilize the petroleum residue pitch, it was used as an adsorbent for removal of cesium ion. In this experiment, acid modification (hydrochloric acid, sulfuric acid) treatment was performed on the adsorbent to improve the ability to remove low-concentration cesium ions dissolved in water. As a result, when the reaction was performed with 9 M sulfuric acid at 25 ℃ and for 240 min, the removal efficiencies of 1.0 and 2.5 mg/L cesium ions were 66 and 51%, respectively. In addition, as the adsorption time increased in the batch experiment, the removal capacity of 1.0 and 2.5 mg/L cesium ions was improved, and when the adsorption reached for 32 hr, the removal efficiencies were 72 and 68%, respectively. Also, in order to increase the ability to remove the remaining cesium ions, an experiment was performed by temperature change (25, 37, 49 ℃), and 1.0 and 2.5 mg/L cesium ions contained in water under the operating conditions of 49 ℃ and 32 hr showed removal efficiencies of 90 and 81%, respectively. Consequently, these experimental results were intended to be used as an adsorption technology that can economically treat low-concentration cesium ions contained in water.

  • This study was carried out to investigate various heavy metal contents in packaging papers by pre-treatments for ICP-ES (Inductively Coupled Plasma Emission Spectrometry) analysis. Pre-treatment methods of heavy metals in this study include extraction, migration and decomposition methods (dry ashing, $HNO_3-HClO_4-HF,\;HNO_3,\;and\;H_2SO_4-HNO_3$). Test results were compared with conventional extraction (water) and migration (3% acetic acid) methods. The five representative heavy metals (Cd, As, Pb, Cr and Hg) were analyzed. For Cd, Hg, and As, the results were below detection limit of the instrumental technique. It was considered that the migration test was a better method compared to extraction test, but all the decomposition methods showed much higher detection values than the extraction or migration test. In case of recycled corrugated containers, 3% acetic acid solution extracted about 25% of chromium and 30% of lead compared to the content by decomposition methods. Among all decomposition methods, the nitric acid - perchloric acid - hydrofluoric acid treatment brought a slightly higher detection value than others, but there was no significant difference among them except sulfuric acid - nitric acid method.

  • The effect of heat treatment and acid leaching of siliceous mudstone on the purity of silica precursors, such as sodium silicate and silicic acid, was studied. As well as the temperatures for the heat treatment of siliceous mudstone, the concentrations of hydrochloric acid and sulfuric acid were varied to achieve the highest content of silicon in the precursors while minimizing energy and chemical consumption. It was found that the optimum conditions were achieved at the heat treatment temperature of $600^{\circ}C$ and hydrochloric acid of 1.56 M. The relative concentrations of silicon in the synthesized sodium silicate and silicic acid were as high as 99.2 and 99.5%, respectively.

  • The sulfuric acid sulfonation mixtures of 2-aminonaphthalene, contained 2-aminonaphthalene, Dahl's acid, Broenner's acid, amino-F-acid and Baden acid, can be determined quantitatively by multicomponent spectrophotometric analysis. The analysis was performed in diluted sodium hydroxide aqueous solution and based on the ultraviolet absorption of the sodium salts of each isomers. The determination of quantity of each isomers was performed by subjection the absorbances of the unknown mixture and of its constituents, gathered at a large number of wavelengths, to a least square treatment by an electronic personer computer. This method provided a rapid analysis of such complex mixture, and the standard deviation was ${\pm}1.65$ mole %.

  • The steel pipe manufacturing industry deals with facilities and materials. Especially thermal facilities are close to vapor cloud explosion (VCE) and may cause secondary damage to facilities because they deal with corrosive substances such as hydrofluoric acid, sulfuric acid and acid, fire, explosion, leakage etc. It is in danger. In this study, hazard identification method was conducted using HAZOP techniques and quantitative risk analysis was conducted using e-CA, a program that supports accident impact analysis. Equipment in the influence range of ERPG - 3 was determined to be a facility requiring replacement. It was decided that neutralization is necessary using slaked lime. Based on the cost of loss, We presented the proper replacement which is the timing of the dangerous facility. As a result, It was ideal to replace the facilities with 20 years of heat treatment facilities, one year of hydrofluoric acid storage tank, 20 years of sulfuric acid storage tank, and 5 years of hydrochloric acid storage tank.

  • In 2014, the first demineralization plant, using nanofiltration (NF) membrane coupled with renewable energies was realized at Al Annouar high school of Sidi Taibi, Kenitra, Morocco. This project has revealed difficulties related to the membrane performances loss (pressure increase, flux decline, poor water quality of the produced water and increase of energy consumption), as consequences of membrane fouling. To solve this problem, an autopsy of the membrane was done in order to determine the nature and origin of the fouling. The samples of membrane and fouling were then analyzed by scanning electron microscopy using a scanning electron microscope (SEM) connected with an energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) detection system and X-ray diffractometer (XRD). Moreover, three cleaning solutions (hydrochloric acid, nitric acid and sulfuric acid) were tested and assessed in a single cleaning step to find the suitable one for the fouled membrane to regain its initial permeability and performances. The analysis of the experimental results showed that the fouling layer is mainly composed of calcium carbonate (inorganic fouling). Results showed also that the permeability is improved by the hydrochloric acid cleaning (pH=3) with a cleaning efficiency of 93%. Cleaning efficiency did not exceed 75 % with nitric acid (pH=3) and 40 % with sulfuric acid (pH=3).

  • The experiment was carried out to fabricate alumina membrane which has a cylindrical pore structure by anodizing aluminium plate in sulfuric acid solution with the electrochemical technique. The aluminium plate for anodizing was prepared by the pretreatment process such as chemical, electro-polishing and thermal treatment. The pore size distribution and the film thickness of alumina membrane were investigated by the implementation of scanning electron microscope(SEM) and BET method. The results show that the oxide film has a geometrical structures like a Keller model and that the membrane has a uniform pore distribution. The pore size and the oxide film thickness are dependent on the anodizing process variables such as the electrolyte concentration, the reation temperature and the anodizing current density.
