We present a case of a 7-year-old boy who had cholestasis after trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole combination therapy. Liver biopsy was performed 36 days after the onset of jaundice because of no evidence of improving cholestasis. Liver histology revealed portal inflammation, bile plug, and biliary stasis around the central vein with the loss of the interlobular bile ducts. Immunohistochemical stains for cytokeratin 7 and 19 were negative. These findings were consistent with those of vanishing bile duct syndrome (VBDS). Chlestasis was progressively improved with dose increment of urosodeoxycholic acid from conventional to high dose. This is the first case report of trimethoprime-sulfamethoxazole associated VBDS in Korean children. The case suggests that differential diagnosis of VBDS should be considered in case of progressive cholestatic hepatitis with elevation of alkaline phosphatase and gamma-glutamyl transpeptidase after or during taking medicine to treat nonhepatobiliary diseases illness.
Pharmacokinetics and urinary excretion of sulfamethoxazole were investigated in healthy sheep. From the plasma disappearance curves after intravenous bolus injection (50 mg/kg), the half-life and volume of distribution were found to be 76 $\PM$14 min and 0.41 $\PM$ 0.18 lit/kg respectively. Body clearance was 4.06 $\PM$ 1.03 ml/kg/min. Very low Concentration of ddrug was present in plasma after 3 hours of administration and plasma level at 6 hour was only 4.4 $\PM$ 2.0 $\mu$g/ml. The renal clearance of sulfamethoxazole (22 $\PM$ 2.17 ml/min/10 kg) exeeded the creatinine clearance (9.78 $\PM$ 1, 57 ml/min/ 10 kg) which may be due to involvement of active tubular secretion and pH dependent back diffusion. Half of the dose of sulfamethoxazole was excreted as unchanged free drug while acetylated amine comprised of 20 percent within the first 6 hours of drug administration.
Sulfamethoxazole particles were microencapsulated using the gelatin-acacia complex coacervation method. Micromeritic properties and dissolution characteristics of the microcapsules were studied. The particle size distribution followed log-normal form. As the hardening time increased, the particle size and wall thickness increased ($45.3-52.0\;{\mu}m$, $2.02-5.12\;{\mu}m$, respectively). This is considered to be due to the cross-linked wall structure of formalized microcapsules which prevents shrinking of gelatin during the dehydration and drying processes. An increase of hardening time clearly delayed the release rate. The in vitro 50% dissolution time $(t_{50})$ for unencapsulated sulfamethoxazole powder was less than 3 min.; for microcapsules hardened for 30 min, the $t_{50}$ was 20.1 min.; for those hardened for 60 min. the $t_{50}$ was 25.0 min.; for those hardened for 120 min., the $t_{50}$ was 35.8 min. The surface of the unhardened microcapsules was smooth and had no cracking or pore penetration. However, the surface of the hardened microcapsules was folded and invaginated.

Continuous mortality in commercially cultured Japanese eel (Anguilla japonica), showing symptoms of dermal ulcerations and focal hemorrhages on the body, occurred on a private farm in November, 2019 in Korea. A series of mortality had been described in one local eel culture farm from November to December in 2019. From the three cases, three isolates of Vibrio spp. were recovered from the blood, ascitic fluid, and kidney of the dead fish, respectively. Based on the 16S rRNA sequence comparisons, the Vibrio isolates from the 1st and 3rd cases (strain named 1E1-2 and 3K1-2) were identified as V. fluvialis and the isolate from the 2nd case was identified as V. plantisponsor (strain named 2A3-1). Moreover, the 16S rRNA-based phylogenetic analysis revealed that strain 1E1-2 and 3K1-2 were most similar to V. fluvialis NBRC 103150T, and strain 2A3-1 was most similar to V. plantisponsor NBRC103148T. According to the results of the antibiotic resistance determination, V. fluvialis 1E1-2 showed intermediate resistance to tetracycline and chloramphenicol, and was resistant to trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole. V. plantisponsor 2A3-1 showed intermediate resistance to ciprofloxacin and levofloxacin, and was resistant to trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole. V. fluvialis 3K1-2 showed intermediate resistance to tetracycline, and was resistant to ampicillin and trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole. These results have provided the evidences on the occurrence of antibiotic-resistant Vibrio infection in commercially cultured Japanese eels are present in Korea.
The ozonation of sulfamethoxazole (SMX) was performed at 20℃ using a pilot scale countercurrent bubble column reactor. Ozonation systems were combined with UV irradiation and TiO2 addition. As the oxidation reaction proceeded in each treatment system, the pH of the sample decreased and in the O3/UV/TiO2 system, the pH change was the largest from 4.54 to 2.02. Under these experimental conditions, the scavenger impact of carbonate is negligible. The highest COD and TOC removal rate was observed in the O3/UV/TiO2 system due to the UV irradiation and the photocatalytic effect of TiO2. Also, the highest mineralization ratio(ε) value is 0.2 in the O3/UV/TiO2 system, which means theoxidation capacity of the systems. The highest SMX degradation rate constants calculated by COD and TOC values (COD and TOC) were 2.15 × 10-4 sec-1 and 1.00 × 10-4 sec-1 in the O3/UV/TiO2 system, respectively. The activation energy (Ea) of ozone treatment follows the Arrhenius law. It was calculated based on COD and TOC. Each activation energy decreased in order of single O3> O3/TiO2> O3/UV > O3/UV/TiO2 system. The result showed that ΔH≠ is more effective than ΔS≠ in each SMX ozontaionsystem, that is characteristic of the common oxidation reaction.
Total of 7,495 children including 3,908 boys and 3,587 girls from a kindergarten and 15 primary schools were examined for head lice infestation (HLI). The overall prevalence of HLI in this study was found to be 5.8%. Head lice were much more commonly detected in girls than in boys with prevalence of 11.2% and 0.9%, respectively. Sixty-nine children with HLI were treated with 1% lindane shampoo alone (group 1), and 45 children with HLI were treated with 1% lindane shampoo and oral trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole (group 2), and follow-up visits were conducted 2 and 4 weeks later, The children who still had HLI 2 weeks after the primary treatment were treated again. At the 2-week follow-up visit, the treatment success rates of groups I and 2 were 76.8% and 80.7%, respectively, and at the 4-week follow-up visit, the rates were 91.3% and 97.8%, respectively. No statistically significant synergistic effect was observed for the combination of a 1% lindane shampoo and oral trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole.
This study was performed to assess the potential use of ozone or UV radiation for the treatment of water contaminated with sulfamethoxazole (SMX), which is frequently used antibiotic in human and veterinary medicines, especially focusing on the kinetic study and effect of pH. In a study using ozone alone, kinetic study was performed to determine second-order rate constant ($k_{O3,SMX}$) for the reactions of SMX with ozone, which was found to be $1.9{\times}10^6M^{-1}s^{-1}$ at pH 7. The removal efficiencies of SMX by ozone were decreased with increase of pH due to rapid decomposition of ozone under the condition of various pH (2.5, 5.3, 7, 8, 10). In a UV irradiation study at 254 nm, a kinetic model for direct photolysis of SMX was developed with determination of quantum yield ($0.08mol\;Einstein^{-1}$) and molar extinction coefficient ($15,872M^{-1}cm^{-1}$) values under the condition of quantum shielding due to the presence of reaction by-products formed during photolysis. For effect of pH on photolysis of SMX, SMX in the anionic state ($S^-$, pH > 5.6), most prevalent form at environmentally relevant pH values, degraded more slowly than in the neutral state (SH, 1.85 < pH < 5.6) by UV radiation at 254 nm.

Endocrine disrupting effects of four pharmaceutical products were evaluated with fish. The test pharmaceuticals, i.e., sulfamethoxazole, sulfamethazine, oxytetracycline and tetracycline have been often detected in aquatic environment, but their ecological hazard on receptors of various trophic levels has seldom been evaluated. In the present study, we conducted acute toxicity assays with a fish, Japanese medake (Oryziα lαtipes). The vitellogenin induced in female fish normally, but a endocrine disrupting chemical could give effects even male fish. We have tried 4 pharmaceutic chemicals to find out the endocrine disrupting effects. Sulfamethoxazole 1, 0.5 ppm induced vitellogenin even at male Japanese medaka. Sulfamethazine 10, 5, 1 ppm could induced vitellogenin at male fish. Oxytetracycline 10, 5, 1ppm could induced vitellogenin With the fish. Tetracycline 10, 5 ppm could induced vitellogenin at male fish. Some pharmaceuticals such as sulfamethoxazole, sulfamethazine, oxytetracycline and tetracycline could give effects to male Oryzias latipes. They could induced vitellogenin under exposure range 0.5 ${\sim}$ 10 ppm of chemicals at male Oryzias latipes.
The adsorption of sulfamethoxazole (SMX) onto a NaOH-activated pine wood-derived biochar was investigated via batch experiments and models. Surprisingly, the maximum adsorption capacity of activated biochar for SMX (397.29 mg/g) was superior than those of pristine biochars from various feedstock, but comparable to those of commercially available activated carbons. Elovich kinetic and Freundlich isotherm models revealed the best fitted ones for the adsorption of SMX onto the activated biochar indicating chemisorptive interaction occurred on surface of the activated biochar. In addition, the intraparticle diffusion limitation was thought to be the major barrier for the adsorption of SMX on the activated biochar. The main mechanisms for the activated biochar would include hydrophobic, π-π interactions and hydrogen bonding. This was consistent with the changes in physicochemical properties of the activated biochar (e.g., increase in sp2 and surface area, but decrease in the ratios of O/C and H/C).
This study was performed to evaluate the prophylactic effects of trimethoprim- sulfamethoxazole (TMP-SMZ) In mice experimentally infected with virulent RH strain and avirulent Beverley strain of T dognii. The mice infected with $1{\times}10^5$ tachyzoltes were used In the measurement of mean survival days, and the mice infected with 10 cysts were used In the tltratlons of specific antibodies and enumeration of brawn cysts. Mean survival days of mice were significantly increased In mice treated with TMP-SMZ as compared with splramycln-treated and untreated control group. Mean survival days and survival rates of mice were Increased according to the Increment of dosages, and TMP-SMZ protected 100% of mice after fifteen daily dose of 24 mg/mouse or more admlnlsted orally. Toxoplasma-specific serum IgG and IgM antibody titers were slgnlflcantly lower in mice treated with TMP-SMZ than those of splramycln-treated and untreated control group. Toxoplosma cysts were not found In mice treated with TMP-SMZ at a dose of 24 mg/mouse or more per day but the group of splramycin treatment and untreated controls were found in the brain from 20 days after Infection. The present results revealed that TMP-SMZ can be used as a prophylactic agent against murine toxoplasmosls after Intraperitoneally challenges with the virulent or avlrulent strain of T. gondii.
