The study was conducted to provide basic data for stable forest management according to climate change by identifying the ecological characteristics of Mt. Dalma warm temperate forest. 30 survey plots were established for vegetation structure analysis, and communities which classified by applying TWINSPAN analysis and DCA analysis techniques. Four plant communities were subdivided into Quercus acuta-Eurya japonica community, Quercus acuta community, Quercus salicina-Camellia japonica community, and Quercus acuta-Camellia japonica community. The tree layers were dominated by Quercus acuta and Quercus salicina, and the subtree layers were dominated by Camellia japonica and Eurya japonica, and the Sasa borealis. The species diversity index were in the range of 0.849 to 0.969, and the degree of Evenness index were 0.514 to 0.569, and the similarity index were 59.57 to 75.47%. The species composition in the community indicated that the deciduous broad-leaved and coniferous trees have already been eliminated in competition with evergreen broad-leaved trees. Tree species with good cold resistance such as Quercus acuta and Quercus salicina were dominant species under current climatic conditions, but the dominant species might be changed to more shade-tolerance evergreen broad-leaved through the succession.
This is a report on the early vegetation and the secondary succession in the burned area of SeobJe-Go1 of $IIwasan-MY\v{o}n,\;Y\v{o}ngch\v{o}n-Gun,\;Ky\v{u}ngsangbuk-do$ Province. The forest fire occurred on April 8, 1982 and the pine forest and its floor vegetation were burned down. The investigation was done six times from August 20, 1982 to August 13, 1983. The results are summarized as follows: the floristic composition of burned areas $B_1,\;B_2$, and unburned areas $U_1,\;U_2$ were composed of 25, 23, 32, and 27 kinds of vascular plants. respectively. The biological spectra showed the $H-D_1-R_5-e$ type in both the burned and unburned areas. The species of Arundinella hirta, Miscanthus simnsis var. purpurascens and Cares hurnilis var. nana were dominant species in the burned area, while Pinus densiflorrr, Corex humilis var. nana and Rhododendron mucronulatum var. ciliafum were dominant species in the unburned area. Degree of succession of the unburned area was comparatively higher than that of the burned area. Species diversity index and evenness index of the burned area were similar to those of the unburned area. Indices of similarity in sampling sites showed that $B_1\;and\;B_2$ stands were the most similar. pH, total nitrogen, available phosphorus and exchangeable potassium of soil increased but organic matter and total organic carbon decreased after fire.
This study was carried out to offer the forensic entomological evidence to estimate the postmortem interval (PMI) based on the decomposing state of the pig carrion and the arthropod succession in exposed carrion. A total of 48 species of 28 families belonging to 7 orders were collected, and dominant insect varied with season, i. e., the Calliphoridae in March, May and October, both of the Calliphoridae and the Staphylinidae in July, and the Staphylinidae in September. The Calliphoridae was the first visiting insect throughout all the seasons as well as the index insect dominant in the early decomposing stage. The index insect in the later decomposing stage, however, was the Staphylinidae throughout all the seasons except in March. In March, the Muscidae was dominant, presumably because the flies consistently arrived throughout the extended period of decomposition of the carrion owing to the low ambient temperature of the season. In this connection, it is known that not only the decomposition stage of the carrion and the carrion-associated insect but also the climatological condition of the region have to be taken into consideration to estimate the PMI.
This is an investigation on the secondary vegetation and succession in the mixed forests destroyed by the severe crown fires on April 8, 1982. The results are summarized as follows: The floristic compositions in the investigated area are composed of 63 kinds of kinds of vascular plants. The biological type shows $ H-D_1, 4-R_5-e$, which is supposed to make a progress to the $ H-D_1-R_5-e$ type. Dominant species are Spodiopogon sibiricus (100.00)-Carex humilis var. nana (70.52)-Miscanthus sinensis var. purpurascens (61, 06)-Lespedeza maximowiczii (57.53). Lespedexa maximowiczii is prevailing as the dominant species in this area. The species diversity(H) and eveness index(e) show 3.00 and 0.74 respectively, so that the species are various and shows uniform distribution comparatively in these communities. Degree of succession(DS) is 479 in the investigated area, the value of which is comparatively higher than that of Chungcheongbuk-do area at the second year afer fires. After the crown and trunk of trees were scorched by the crown fires, the pine tree (Pinus densiflora) died and the other species could be survivd after sometimes. It some that Quercus serrata. Q. dentata, Maackia amurensis, Lespedez cyrtobotrya, Platycarya strobilacea and Lindera glauca are the fire-resistant plants.
We obtained quantitative information on leaf unfolding and leaf shedding by observing 45 species of cool temperate deciduous trees in an arboretum over 5 growing seasons. These trees were in leaf (the foliage period) for 207 days on average after 1 April; 50% of leaves had been shed by 192 days after 1 April. Duration from the start of leaf unfolding to 50% leaf shedding was 157 days on average. Leaf unfolding began 35 days on average after 1 April. For leaf unfolding to begin, a$ 51^{\circ}C{\cdot}day$ of cumulated daily mean air temperature above $5^{\circ}C$ from 1 January (modified Kira's warmth index) was needed. Fifty-nine days elapsed between initiation and the final stage of leaf unfolding. The period of net photosynthetic assimilation was 157 days. The species with succeeding- type leaf unfolding associated with the anemochore seed type dominated the early stage of succession, while the species with flush-type leaf unfolding tended to dominate the late stage of succession. Few species were found in regions where late frosts occur after the day when the cumulative temperature for leaf unfolding is achieved. Biological characteristics include time of leaf unfolding, which affects the life history of each species, so that each species occupies its own niche in the stand. We conclude that that leaf phenology, such as timing of leaf unfolding and leaf shedding, is one of the components of each species' ecological characteristics.
The paper is investigation of the secondary vegeation and succession at the forest fire area in Mt. Palgong. The survey was carried out from April, 1981 to Stempter, 1982. The floristic compositions were as follows: 50 families, 116 genera, 127 species, 15 varieties and 3 formae(145 kinds). Among them, the floristic composition of the pine floor vegetation of the unburned area was 43 families, 80 genera, 88 species, 10 varieties and 1 forma(99 kinds), and that of the secondary vegetatiion after forest fire was 46 families, 106 genera, 120 species, 14 varieties and 3 formae(137 kinds). Index of similarity between the burned and unburned area was 0.77. The biological type succeeded in $H-D_1-R_5$type, and the erect form(s) was prevailed. Carex humilis var. nana, Miscanthus sinensis var. purpurascens, and lespedeza cyrtobotrya were dominant species in the $ B_1; and; B_2$ area of the seventh year after forest fire. In the degree of succession, species diversity, and evenness index, DS, H, and e of the $B_1$ area were higher than those of the $B_2$ area. In the soil properties, it assumed that pH, total nitrogen, and available phosphores of the burned area were nearly recovered to those of the unburned area.

This study was carried out to the structure of plant community, and ecological succession sere of forest ecosystem in Soguemgang Valley, Odaesan National Park. Fifteenth plots(size is $20m{\times}20m$) were set up and the results analyzed by DCA which is one of the ordination technique showed that the plant communities were divided into seven groups which area community I(Quercus variabilis-Pinus densiflora community), II(Pinus densiflora community), III(Pinus densiflora-Quercus variabilis community), IV(Pinus densiflora-Quercus serrata community), V(Quercus serrata community), VI(Pinus densiflora-Deciduous broad-leaved plant community), VII(Cornus controversa-Carpinus laxiflora community). Shannon diversity index per $400m^2$ was to 0.7777 to 1.1440 and the age of Pinus densiflora 86 years old, Quercus variabilis was ranged from 66 to 87 years old, Quercus serrata was ranged from 51 to 62 years old, Carpinus laxiflora was 94 years old. In 2013, the succession trend was predicted Pinus densiflora${\rightarrow}$Quercus variabilis, Quercus serrata ${\rightarrow}$Cornus controversa, Carpinus laxiflora. The ecological sucession progress has declined power of the Pinus densiflora and the increased power of the deciduous broad-leaved and Quercus spp. in Soguemgang Valley, Odaesan National Park. Quercus serrata and Quercus variabilis communities that judged Pinus densiflora were progressing by direction of landform. The southern slopes vegetation were progressing for Quercus variabilis, the northern slopes vegetation were progressing for Quercus serrata. In flat Valley, mainly native species of Cornus controversa, Carpinus laxiflora are predicted ecological succession for deciduous broad-leaved tree community.
We selected 6 plots ($100m^2$) located 2.2-3.8 km from Minamidake Crater on the north flank of Sakurajima Volcano. We conducted a field study to investigate the effects of volcanic activity on vegetation succession and surface erosion rate. The results showed that trees growing in plots further from the crater had a greater diameter at breast height (DBH), total height, and age. In addition, these plots had a greater number of woody plants and species, as well as a greater total cross-sectional area at breast height. The Fisher-Williams index of diversity (${\alpha}$) and the proportion of evergreen broad-leaved trees were higher in plots located further from the crater. Vegetation succession in these plots was not at the level of a climax forest. From 1972 to 2015, the timing for active volcano, the depth of volcanic ash layer, the dry density, and the pH of ground surface were lower for plots located further from the crater. Furthermore, the average annual sheet erosion from 1972 to 2015 was also lower for plots located further away from the crater. Overall, plots further away from the crater have a better environment for vegetation growth and a lower dry density of the volcanic ash surface layer. It is thought that lower dry density results in increased soil permeability, which impedes surface flow. In order to prevent debris-flow disasters, caused by mud and rock flow resulting from impaired soil penetrability, it is essential to promote soil development and restore penetrability by artificial vegetation restoration.
This study was carried out to investigate the developmental process of plant community during the secondary succession and changes of soil properties in the burned areas lapsed 28 years after the forest fire in Mt.Palgong. The forest fire occurred on March, 1969 and the red pine (pinus densiflora) forest and its floor vegetation were burned down. The results are summarized as follows: the floristic composition of burned and unburned areas were composed of 49 and 48 species of vascular plants, respectively. The dominant species based on SDR4 of the burned sites were Lespedeza maximowicxii(87.75), Carex humilis (62.94), Rhododendron schippenbachii(55.78) and Miscanthus sinensis var.purpurascens (51.94). In contrast, Pinus densiflora (81.17), Quercus serrata (53.58)m Carex humilis (53.11) and Miscanthus sinenis var. purpuracens (52.42) were dominant in the unburned area. The biological spectra showed the $H-D_1-R_5-e$ type in both areas. The indices of similarity (CCs) between the two areas were 0.80. Degree of succession (DS) was 734 in the burned area and 809 in the unburned area. The species diversity (H) and evenness indices (e) in the burned and unburned areas were 2.05, 2.13 and 0.53, 0.55, respectively. Dominance index (C) in the burned and unburned areas were 0.30 and 0.32, respectively. Soil properties such as soil pH, content of organic matter, total nitrogen, total carbon, exchangeable potassium, sodium, calcium, and magnesium in burned area were comparatively higher than those of unburned area. Monthly changes of soil properties were of little significance except for some cases. These results suggest that there was relationship between trend of vegetation recovery and the changes of soil properties after the forest fire. Mixed forestation of fire-resistant species and nitrogen fixation species will be effective for reforestation after the forest fire.
According to the concept of woodland aesthetic in Germany and forest design in United Kingdom, artificial forest should be restore ecologically step by step in National Park, Korea. This study was carried out to provide the density criterion of thinning for the inducement of the ecological succession by analysing of vegetational structure in Artificial Forest, National Parks. Eleven plots(size is $20m{\times}20m$) were set up in the artificial forest such as Pinus koraiensis forest, Abies holophylla forest, Chamaecyparis obtusa forest, Populus tomentiglandulosa forest, and Larix kaempferi forest and in the natural forest such as Pinus densiflora community, Pinus densiflora-Quercus serrata community, and Quercus serrata community in Chiaksan, Songnisan, Deogyusan, and Naejangsan National Parks, Korea. We classified the artificial forest into undeveloped type of succession, type of alien young trees developing, and early phase type of succession based on the vegetational structure. According to the index of Shnnon's diversity(unit: $400m^2$), undeveloped type of succession was ranged from 0.9681 to 1.1323, type of alien young trees developing was ranged from 1.0192 to 1.1870, early phase type of succession was ranged from 1.3071 to 1.3892, and natural vegetation was ranged from 1.2202 to 1.3428, therefore early phase type of succession forest and natural vegetation are more higher than simple-layered artificial forest with one needle leaf tree species. The limit for the step-by-step thinning was in the range of 30~60%. In case of undeveloped type of succession, we should thin out from large trees throughout three phases, because alien species dominated high value 88~90% in canopy layer. In case of type of alien young trees developing, we should thin out from alien young trees such as Populus tomentiglandulosa throughout one or two phases, because alien species dominated high value 60~97% and young trees with saplings growing up in understory and shrub layer. In case of early phase type of succession, we should thin out from alien trees that compete with native species throughout one or two phases, because alien species dominated less than value 30%.
