  • This study was conducted to examine how a low-head dam removal (partial removal) could affect benthic macroinvertebrate communities in a stream. Benthic macroinvertebrates and substrates were seasonally sampled before and after dam removal (March 2006-April 2007). Benthic macroinvertebrates and substrates were quantitatively sampled from immediately upstream (upper: pool) and downstream (lower: riffle) sites, the location of the dam itself (middle), and immediately above the impoundment (control: riffle). After the removal, species richness and density of benthic macroinvertebrates as well as the EPT group (Ephemeroptera, Plecoptera and Trichoptera) increased to higher levels than those before the removal, while functional feeding groups and habitat orientation groups changed more heterogeneously at the upper site. At the lower site, species richness and density decreased somewhat immediately after dam removal, which was associated with an increase of silt and sand, but recovered after monsoon floods which helped to enhance substrate diversity at the upper site. Decreased dominance index and increased diversity index in both the upper and lower sites are evidence of positive effects from the dam removal. In conclusion, we suggest that even a partial removal of a dam, resulting in increased substrate diversity in the upper site, could sufficiently help rehabilitate lost ecological integrity of streams without major habitat changes.

  • Effects of carbon dioxide partial pressure(PCO2) on bacterial population, methane production rate and matter degradation in anaerobic digestion were investigated by using anaerobic chemostat type reactors at 35$\pm$1$^{\circ}C$, at the HRT of 7 days. At PCO2 of 0.5 atm, the specific methane production rate and specific substrate removal rate reached the maximum rates. The methane production rates in the reactors fed by mixed substrate were 26% higher than those obtained under the controlled condition. The number of acetate consuming methanogenic bacteria enumerated by the MPN(most probable number) method, decreased when PCO2 exceeded 0.7 atm. Hydrogen consuming methanogenic bacteria and homoacetogenic bacteria increased as PCO2 increased from 0.1 to 0.6 atm, however, decreased slightly at PCO2 above 0.7 atm. The number of hydrolytic bacteria, sulfate-reducing bacteria and H2-producing acetogenic bacterial were not much influenced by the change of PCO2. The potential methanogenic activity reached the maximum at PCO2 0.5 atm, however, decreased significantly when PCO2 exceeded 0.7 atm, would depend on free PCO2 concentration in solution.

  • The advantage of plasma-sprayed coating is their good resistance against thermal shock due to the porous state of the coated layer with a consequently low Youngs modules. However, the existence of many pores with a bimodal distribution and a laminar structure in the coating reduces coating strength and oxidation protection of the base metals. In order to counteract these problems, there have been many efforts to obtain dense coatings by spraying under low pressure or vacuum and by controlling particle size and morphology of the spraying materials. The aim of the present study is to survey the effects of the HIP treatment between 1100 and 130$0^{\circ}C$ on plasma-sprayed oxide coating of A1$_2$O$_3$, A1$_2$O$_3$-SiO$_2$ on the metal substrate (type C18N10T stainless steel). These effects were characterized by phase identification, Vickers hardness measurement, and tensile test before and after HIPing, These results show that high-pressure treatment has an advantage for improving adhesive strength and Vickers hardness of plasma- sprayed coatings.

  • The TiN filmms were deposited on the stainless steel substrates by BARE techinique in order to investigate the effects of process parameters such as source-to-substate distance (15-35cm), N2 pressure(4$\times$10-10 -1$\times$10-3mb)and bias voltage(O-2000V), on the deposition rate, the concentration ratio [N/Ti] and the surface color of the films. The deposition rate was deduced from the weight measurement, the [N/ti] ratio by ESCA. The deposition rate decreased with a relationship of=40.2/D2 where D was source-to-substrate distance. The effect of the bias voltage and the N2pressure on the deposition rate, however, appeared negligble. The [N/Ti] ratio was in the narrow range of 0.7 tp 0.8 It increased slightly with the N2 partial pressure and deceased with the source-to-substrate distance. It was confired by ESCA that a significant amount of oxygen and carbon was contaminated after deposition in the top surface of TiN films. The surface color of TiN film was changed from light gold yellow to reddish gold yellow with increasing [N/Ti] ratio.

  • Indium aluminum arsenide(InAlAs) was grown by molecular beam epitaxy on (001) indium phosphide (InP) substrate and the effects of growth temperature on the properties of epitaxial layers were studied. In the temperature range of 370-$400 ^{\circ}C$, we observed that the surface morphology, optical quality and structural quality of InAlAs epilayers were improved as growth temperature increased. However, the InAlAs epilavers grown at $430 ^{\circ}C$ have the bad surface morphology and show the same trends as structural and epical quality. As a result of these measurements, it is suggested that the InAlAs epilayers of very good properties can be grown at $400 ^{\circ}C$.

  • This paper presents the effects of the position of the split of a split-ring resonator (SRR) on the performance of a composite broadband printed dipole antenna. The antenna is made of two printed dipole arms enclosed by two rectangular and identically printed SRRs. One dipole arm and the SRR are printed on the top side of the substrate, while the other dipole arm and SRR are printed on the bottom side of the same substrate. By changing the position of the split on the SRR, different antenna characteristic values are obtained, namely, for impedance bandwidth and radiation patterns. The split position is thus a critical parameter in antenna design, because it influences the antenna's major performance immensely. Different split positions and their consequences for antenna performance are demonstrated and discussed. The antenna generates linearly polarized radiations, and it is computationally characterized for broadband characteristics. The optimized compact antenna has overall dimensions of 9.6 mm × 74.4 mm × 0.508 mm (0.06λ × 0.469λ × 0.0032λ at 1.895 GHz) with a measured fractional bandwidth of 60.31% (1.32 to 2.46 GHz for |S11| <-10 dB) and a radiation efficiency of >88%.

  • In the present study, effects of a thin Zn-flash coating on hydrogen evolution, infusion, and embrittlement of advanced high strength steel during electro-galvanizing were examined. The electrochemical permeation technique in conjunction with impedance spectroscopy was employed under applied cathodic polarization. Moreover, a slow-strain rate test was conducted to evaluate loss of elongation (i.e., indicative of hydrogen embrittlement (HE)) and examine fracture surfaces. Results showed that the presence of a thin Zn-flash coating, even when it was not distributed uniformly, reduced hydrogen evolution rate and substantially impeded infusion of hydrogen into the steel substrate. This was primarily due to a hydrogen overvoltage on Zn coating and trapping of hydrogen at the interface of Zn coating/flash coating/steel substrate. Consequently, the sample with flash coating had a smaller HE index than the sample without flash coating. These results suggest that a thin Zn-flash coating could be an effective technical strategy for mitigating HE in advanced high-strength steels.

  • The growth of GaN films on Si substrate has many advantages in that Si is less expensive than sapphire substrate and that integration of GaN-based devices with Si substrate is easier The difference of lattice constant and thermal expansion coefficient between GaN and Si is larger than those between GaN and sapphire. However, which results in many defects into the grown GaN. In order to obtain high duality GaN films on Si substrate, we need to reduce defects using the buffer layer such as AlN. In this study, we prepared three types of AlN buffer layer with various crystallinity on Si (111) substrate using MOCVD, Sputtering and MOMBE methods. GaN was grown by MOCVD on three types of AlN/Si substrate. Using TEM and XRD, we carried out comparative investigation of growth and properties of GaN deposited on the various AlN buffers by characterizing lattice coherency, crystallinity, growth orientation and defects formed (voids, stacking faults, dislocations, etc). It is found that the crystallinity of AlN buffer layer has strong effects on growth of GaN. The AlN buffer layers grown by MOCVD and MOMBE showed the reduction of out-of-plane misorientation of GaN at the initial growth stage.

  • The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of 3 environment- friendly farming materials on the growth of pepper and tomato seedlings under low level of solar radiation. The pepper and tomato seedlings were separately grown on commercial substrate and non-fertilizer substrate under 30% shading condition, respectively. The microbe-, enzyme-, and amino acid-supplements were used for the foliar application to the seedlings. The application of enzyme- and amino acid-supplements significantly enhanced the growth of tomato and pepper seedlings grown on non-fertilizer substrate, while there was no significant effect on the seedlings grown on commercial substrate. The foliar application of enzyme- and amino acid-supplements reduced the days to flowering by 3 to 4 days and lowered the node order of fruit set in tomato plants grown on non-fertilizer substrate. The results showed that the enzyme- and amino acid-supplements could enhance the seedling growth and lower the node order of fruit set under limited nutritional conditions.

  • The effects of growth substrates such as toluene and phenol on cometabolic biodegradation of trichloroethylene (TCE) by Burkholderia cepacia G4 were investigated. The dual effects of primary substrate on TCE biodegradation, stimulatory effects of toluene and phenol at low concentrations (0.5∼2 ppm & 0.1∼0.5 ppm, respectively) and a competitive inhibition at high concentration, were observed in batch experiments. These stimulatory effects of toluene and phenol were found to be due to the increments in the amount of reducing power like NADH which could be generated during the assimilation of toluene and phenol as the carbon and energy source. The efficiency of TCE biodegradation in trickling biofilm reactor (TBR) could be also enhanced up to the TCE removal efficiency of 58.1% by the supply of appropriate amounts of phenol (0.94∼4.7 ppm).
