  • This paper describes results of an experimental study to examine the effect of a submerged horizontal breakwater to sea water exchange. Flow measurements were taken by using a PIV(Particie Image Velocimetry) system, and mean currents and wave ellipses extracted through the harmonic analysis are presented. As results, the rates of circulating flow were closely connected with the volume flux of incident waves and the counter-rotating vortex pair was observed at the onshore side of a plate. The dye study showed that incoming sea water and polluted water body mixed up significantly due to turbulent motions induced by a jet-like flow.

  • In this paper, wave absorbing characteristics of a horizontal submerged punching plate are investigated throughout the calculation and the experiment. The punching plate with the array of circular holes can force the flow to separate and to form eddies of high vorticity and cause significant energy loss. As an analytic tool, the linear water wave theory and the eigenfunction expansion method is applied. Darcy's law that the normal velocity of the fluid passing through the punching plate is linearly proportional to the pressure difference between two sides of the punching plate is assumed. The proportional constant called the porous coefficient is deeply dependent to the porosity. To obtain the relationship between the porosity and the porous coefficient the systematic model test for the punching plates with 6 different porosities is conducted at 2-dimensional wave tank. It is found that the porous coefficient is linearly proportional to the porosity(b=57.63P-0.9717). It is also noted that the optimal porosity value is near P=0.1 and the optimal range of submergence depth is $d/h\\leq0.2$ within entire frequency range.

  • An efficient spline boundary element scheme is newly developed for water wave scattering of an incident wave train on a submerged breakwater. Validation of the present scheme is accomplished through the numerical experiments for various cases, by comparing the numerical results with theories vailable in the literature. Very accurate reflection and transmission coefficients for thin horizontal breakwater are obtained. It is observed that the reflection coefficient for the rectangular breakwater is significantly affected by the thickness. Horizontal and vertical forces on the breakwater for various thicknesses were also investigated.

  • The aim of this study was to improve the vertical motion performance of floating marina structures and to optimize the shapes of the structures for the Korea coastal environment. The floating body is connected to a plate-shaped submerged body through a connecting line under the water that has a stiff spring that serves to reduce the heave response. This system, which has two degrees of freedom, was modelled to analyze the interaction between the floating body and the submerged body. The vertical motion of the two-body system was compared with the motion of a single body to verify that the system could perform as an optimized model.

  • The radiation of water waves by a heaving truncated circular cylinder with damping plate is solved in the frame of the three-dimensional linear potential theory. The damping plate has a distinct advantage in reducing the motion response of a floating circular cylinder by increasing the added mass and the damping coefficient. Using the matched eigenfunction expansion method, the characteristics of hydrodynamic added mass and the damping coefficient are investigated with various system parameters, such as the radius and submergence depth of the damping plate. It is found that both added mass and the damping coefficient are significantly increased due to the arranged features of the larger damping plate with shallow submergence, which are positive factors as a motion reduction device of the floating offshore platform. Also the numerical results for an oscillating submerged disk show that the added mass is negative and that the damping coefficient has a peak value at resonant frequency when submergence depth is sufficiently small.

  • This paper deals with the experimental investigation on the hydrodynamic behavior of the submerged artificial seabed system in regular waves. This system can function as a basis of seaweed forest which will cultivate coastal fishing ground and enhance coastal productivity. The experiment was conducted with the submerged rectangular plates of different length and depth in 2-D wave flume of KRISO/KORDI. The wave exciting forces, mooring line tension and 2-D motion response are measured and analyzed to figure out the design strategy.

  • This study investigates an efficient method to estimate the total acoustic radiation power of submerged circular cylindrical structures. Since the acoustic radiation power of submerged vehicles can be changed during the operation, the estimation for its monitoring onboard is required to accomplish the missions. The total acoustic radiation power is estimated using the measured velocity and the calculated radiation efficiency of the surface which consists of submerged rectangular plate elements. Experiments are carried out to validate the estimation approach. Comparisons of the estimation results with the measurements show that they are in a good agreement for the mid-high frequency range and match well for the cases of different excitation locations which correspond to the different operation modes of underwater vehicles as well. Therefore, this estimation method can be applied effectively to the development of the radiated noise monitoring-system.

  • This study deals with the free vibration of a circular plate in contact with a fluid; submerged in fluid, beneath fluid or on fluid. An analytical method based on the finite Fourier-Bessel series expansion and Rayleigh-Ritz method is suggested. The proposed method is verified by the finite element analysis using commercial program with a good accuracy. The normalized natural frequencies are obtained in order to estimate the relative added mass effect of fluid on each vibration mode of the plate. Also, the location of plate coupled with fluid and the cases of free and bounded fluid surface are studied for the effect on the vibration characteristics.
