  • Emulsion polymerization ws carried out using Alkyl methacrylate(RMA) like MMA, EMA, BMA and Styrene Monomer(SM) for core-shell latex preparation. It was synthesized at $80^{\circ}C$ in the presence of anionic surfactant SLS(Sodium Lauryl Sulfate). FT-IR and DSC analysis are used to confirm the synthesized core-shell emulsion latexes. Moreover DSC and TGA were used to investigate the thermal characterisitcs of them. The differences of the decomposition rate and the activation energy from TGA and DSC analysis are not so big. It considers that the pendent group is not affect of the thermal characteristics and stability on core-shell latexes, which is synthesized with RMA and Styrene. For investigating combustion products, LC50 values were calculated by FED(Fractional Effective Dose)from the Pyrolyzer-Mass sepctrometer.

  • Product yields were determined for the reaction of styrene with sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) in CH$_2$Cl$_2$ with various substituted manganese porphyrin complexes as catalysts. In the presence of the electron withdrawing group and ortho-substituted manganese porphyrin complexes, reaction rate and epoxide selectivity are increased. Also reaction rate and epoxide selectivity are largely increased by the presence of imidazole which behaves as axial ligand of the manganese porphyrin complexes. By the kinetic study with Michealis-Menten equation, the factor significantly affected to catalytic ability is $K_m$ value. A large binding affinity consists with the low $K_m$. With theoretical analysis by EHMO calculation, the results are in good agreement with experimental data.

  • Vinyl ester (VE) resins, introduced in the late 1960s, have made large strides in reinforced plastics applications as adhesive and matrix materials on their appropriate mechanical performance characteristics in the glassy state. Generally, VE resins are a group of dimethacrylate resins based on bisphenol A type epoxy resin. They exhibit easy handling properties as well as good resistance to most chemical agents due to their mechanical and thermal properties. In this study, the effects of curing methods of vinyl ester resins on gel contents, flexural strength and dynamic mechanical properties were investigated. Thermal curing (room temperature, $80^{\circ}C$) and electron beam curing were used to crosslink a VE resin/styrene complex (65/35 wt%) with methyl ethyl ketone peroxide (MEKPO) as a catalyst and an 8 wt% cobalt naphthenate in styrene solution as a accelerator. For the samples, gel contents as well as flexural strength and dynamic mechanical properties were characterized and compared by soxhlet apparatus, universal testing machine (UTM) and dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA). As a result, the electron-cured VE resin was confirmed as a better condition than those for gel contents, flexural strength and dynamic mechanical properties, respectively.

  • This study is on the synthesis of reactive polymer modifiers by emulsion polymerization to improve properties of asphalt for paving. Styrene, methyl methacrylate (MMA), isoprene and glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) which has epoxy ring to react with carboxyl group of asphaltene were used to synthesize polymer modifiers. Modifiers with various composition were tested miscibility with asphalt. Modifiers which showed good miscibility with asphalt were investigated by DSC for $T_g$. Existence of epoxy rings and their reaction with asphaltene wore investigated by FTIR. Molecular structures of synthesized modifiers were confirmed by $^1H-NMR$. The synthesized modifiers which showed good miscibility had their $Tg's$ in the range of $37.5{\sim}56.5^{\circ}C$ and had isoprene contents of 30 wt%. They showed good miscibility in the 1 and 2 wt% concentrations, but not in the 3 wt% concentration.

  • In this study, waste tire rubbers were pyrolyzed in a lab-scale pyrolysis plant equipped with a fluidized bed reactor in a temperature ranges of $450-650^{\circ}C$. The main object of this work is to investigate the properties of pyrolysis oil with reaction temperatures and the behavior of sulfur in the products when waste polypropylene was added for co-pyrolysis. The maximum yield of oil was about 52wt.% at the reaction temperature of $456^{\circ}C$. From GC-MS analysis, the pyrolysis oils consisted mainly of limonene, toluene, xylene, styrene, trimethylbenzene, methylnaphthalenes and some heteroatom(sulfur and nitrogen)-containing compounds. The addition of waste polypropylene resulted in decrease in sulfur contents of the pyrolysis oils.

  • In this study, diethylaminoethyl methacrylate-styrene-butadiene terpolymer (DEAEMA-SBR), in which diethylaminoethyl methacrylate (DEAEMA) was introduced to the SBR molecule as a third monomer, was synthesized by cold emulsion polymerization. It is expected that amine group introduced to a rubber molecule would improve dispersion of silica by the formation of hydrogen bond (or ionic coupling) between the amine group and silanol groups of silica surface. The chemical structure of DEAEMA-SBR was analyzed using proton nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (H-NMR), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), gel permeation chromatography (GPC) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). Then, various properties of DEAEMA-SBR/silica composite such as crosslink density, bound rubber content, abrasion resistance, and mechanical properties were evaluated. As a result, bound rubber content and crosslink density of DEAEMA-SBR/silica compound were higher than those of the SBR 1721 composite. Abrasion resistance and moduli at 300% elongation of the DEAEMA-SBR/silica composite were better than those of SBR 1721 composite due to the high bound rubber content and crosslink density. These results are attributed to high affinity between DEAEMA-SBR and silica. The proposed study suggests that DEAEMA-SBR can help to improve mechanical properties and abrasion resistance of the tire tread part.

  • The core-shell polyolefin nonwovon fabric (PNF), wherein the PNF comprises at least about 60% of polyethylene having a melting temperature at ${\sim}132^{\circ}C$ and no more than about 40% of second polypropylene having a lower melting temperature at ${\sim}162^{\circ}C$. The sulfonic acid group for battery separators were prepared by radiation-induced grafting of styrene onto PNF and by the subsequent sulfonation of polystyrene graft chains. The sulfonated PNF was characterized by XPS, SEM, DSC, TGA and porosimeter. The electrochemical properties such as electrolyte retension, electrical resistance, and transport number of the $K^+ions$ were evaluated after sulfonation. It was found that the electrolyte retension increased, whereas the electrical resistance decreased with increasing sulfonic acid content. The transport number of $K^+$ in PNF with sulfonic acid of 0.22 ~ 3.60 mmol/g was to be 0.90 ~ 0.93.

  • Charge transfer interaction as a hybridization mechanism of silsesquioxane/polymer was tested using carbazole (electron donor) group and dinitrobenzene (electron acceptor) group. Hybridization test was conducted using films made from mixing/casting of poly (carbazole-styrene) (PS/D) and dimtrobenzyl silsesquioxane (Cube/A), and transparent hybrid films were successfully obtained under some conditions. $^1H-NMR$ of PS/D and Cube/A, and W absorption test of hybrid films showed that one acceptor and one donor can form one charge transfer complex when no silsesquioxane molecule was included in films, but transparent hybrids with no phase separation were obtained only at acceptor/donor ratios less than 0.7 : 1. These results also suggested that on average 4 charge transfer complexes form per one silsesquioxane.

  • The four different vinyl monomers in the reaction of isocyanate-terminated polyurethane prepolymer were used for the preparation of macromonomers and successfully employed in the dispersion polymerization of styrene. The chemical structures of vinyl monomer in macromonomers influenced on the polystyrene particle characteristics, such as the conversion, weight average molecular weights ($M_w$), polydispersity index (PDI), weight average diameter ($D_w$), and uniformity. The conversion of polystyrene increased with amounts of methyl group in vinyl monomer. Also the uniformity of polystyrene particles increased with amounts of methyl group in vinyl monomer.
