Method: The data were collected through the in-depth interviews of seven male students majoring in nursing. The analysis of data were made using phenomenological analytic method suggested by Colaizzi(1978). Result: In this study, five essential themes emerged. They are: $\ulcorner$Strong initial -though subsequently declining- hesitation over choice of major$\lrcorner$, $\ulcorner$Challenging, ongoing effort to survive in an environment of new and unaccustomed experiences and relationships$\lrcorner$, $\ulcorner$Recurring sense of reassurance and relief upon occasions of unexpected success$\lrcorner$, $\ulcorner$Growing internalization and acceptance of their role as nursing students or as future nurses$\lrcorner$, $\ulcorner$Ambivalent feelings resulting from the contradiction between their vision concerning their future as nurses and their worry concerning their future as male nurses$\lrcorner$Conclusion: With an increasing number of male students majoring in nursing, this study will prove helpful not only in understanding male students' experience while majoring in nursing but also in describing their needs for systemic and emotional support.

  • This study was conducted to detect the correlations and the main factors influencing self-directedness in learning of nursing students. Method: The samples were composed of 224 nurse students who were from three nursing department in Seoul, Chungnam & Kyunbook. The reliability of 4 instruments was tested with Cronbach's $\alpha$ from .63 to .86. The data was analyzed using a SAS program for descriptive statistics, Pearson correlation coefficients and stepwise multiple regression. Result: The results were as follows: 1. The mean self-directedness score was 91.23 which was slightly high. The self-directedness in learning was influenced significantly by grade, perception of self-level, self-study in majoring and self-study except for majoring(F= 3.33-7.14, p<.05). 2. There were significant correlations between all the predictive variables and the self-directedness(r=.27-48, p<.01). 3. Stepwise multiple regression analysis showed that 35% of the self-directedness in learning of nursing students were significantly explained by self-esteem(23%), locus of control(6%), self-study except for majoring(2 kind, 2%), self study in majoring(good, 2%), and self-study except for majoring( above 3 kind, 2%). Conclusion: Based upon these findings, sociopsychological variables like self-esteem and locus of control are very important factor influencing self-directedness in learning of nursing students.

Statistical analyses included the t-test, analysis of variance, Scheffe test, Pearson correlation coefficient, and multiple regression analysis. Results : The everyday creativity of the nursing students was 3.65±0.43, self-esteem was 3.70±0.63, and sociality was 3.21±.33. Significant differences were observed for self-esteem according to the participant's grade (F=3.11, p=.027), monthly income (F=2.41, p=.050), health condition (F=4.87, p=.001) and clinical experience (t=-2.17, p=.031). Significant differences were not observed with regard to sociality. A static correlation was observed between everyday creativity and self-esteem (r=.478, p<.001) and between everyday creativity and sociality (r=.342, p<.001). Self-esteem and sociality were also statistically correlated (r=.168, p<.05). Factors that influenced the participants' sociality included monthly income (𝛽=.168, p=.015), health condition (𝛽=.178, p=.022), clinical experience (𝛽=-.161, p=.048), ability to find alternative solutions (𝛽=.245, p=.015), and in dependent nature (𝛽=.224, p=.003); The explanatory power was 15.60 %. • Purpose: This study was performed to examine predictors of allied health science students' exercise behavior using Pender's Health Promotion Model. Method: The subjects were 203 university students majoring in nursing, emergency medical service, and exercise prescription. The hypothetical model was based on the HPM(Pender, 1996). Exogenous variables of the model were exercise habit and role belief. Endogenous variables were exercise-related affect, exercise self-efficacy, exercise barrier, exercise intention, and exercise behavior. The data were analyzed by SAS PC program and LISREL 8.12 program. Result: The degree of exercise behavior was low(mean 1.86, range 1~4). The overall fit of the model to the data was acceptable. Exercise habit, exercise self-efficacy and exercise-related affect were significant predictors of exercise intention and exercise behavior. Conclusion: This study shows the necessity of the program to increase the level of exercise participation of university students majoring in allied health science. The model constructed in this study is applicable to explain exercise behavior of university students majoring in allied health science, and suggests that we should focus on exercise habit, exercise self-efficacy and exercise-related affect to increase the level of exercise behavior of this group.
