Objectives : The purpose of this study is to identify differences in time, frequency, and methods of toothbrushing according to knowledge acquirement of oral health between first and third year dental hygiene students who had relatively sufficient oral health education and students majoring non-health related field who had less opportunities of oral health education, to emphasize importance and necessity of the education, and to present basic data for development of effective programs of oral health education. Methods : 2,032 dental hygiene students and students majoring non-health related field attending 12 universities in Korea had been selected as subjects and were asked to complete a self-administered survey time, frequency, and methods of toothbrushing. The SPSS 12.0 program was used for statistical analysis of the collected data, and the significance of difference by groups was tested by using chi-square test, the one-way ANOVA and independent t-test. The mean frequency of toothbrushing per day and the rate of toothbrushing before and after meal were analyzed by using of multiple comparisons through the Scheffe test as post hoc test. Results : The rate of toothbrushing after lunch was 60.2% in third year and 39.2% in first year dental hygiene students, 20.3% in students majoring non-health related field, respectively. The mean frequencies per day of dental hygiene students were 3.33 times in third year and 2.85 times in first year dental hygiene students, 2.46 times in students majoring non-health related field, respectively. The rate of toothbrushing after meal among total frequency of toothbrushing per day was 85.36% in third year and 84.81% in first year dental hygiene students, 77.90% in students majoring non-health related field, respectively. As for the methods of toothbrushing, 'Turning up and down' was 68.8% in third year and 43.1% in first year dental hygiene students, 30.6% in students majoring non-health related field, respectively. Conclusions : Oral health education through dental hygiene course may improve the oral environment management of dental hygiene students and oral health education on toothbrushing should be strengthened for the students majoring non-health related field.
Objectives: The purpose of the study is to investigate the relationship between fluorine concentration within finger nails and the level of dentifrice in dental hygiene students and non-health majoring students. Methods: A self-reported questionnaire was completed by seventy female college students living in Daegu and Gyeongbuk that are not supplied with fluoridation from May to June, 2014. Informed consent was approved by institutional review board (IRB). The questionnaire consisted of general characteristics of the subjects (11 items) and oral health behavior including number of toothbrushing, duration of toothbrushing, number of mouth rinsing, and amount of dentifrice. A dentist and a dental hygienist examined directly the subjects by the guideline of World Health Organization (WHO). The oral examination included decayed tooth, healthy tooth, and filled tooth. The nail samples were obtained from seventy female students. Results: Comparing the dental hygiene students and non-health majoring students, 62.5% of dental hygiene students used approximately 1300mg of dentifrice and 55.2% of non-health majoring students used 1800mg or more of dentifrice. The non-health majoring students used more dentifrice (p<0.01). The fluorine concentration within nails was $1.9905{\mu}l/g$ in dental hygiene students and $3.2149{\mu}l/g$ in non-health majoring students. The fluorine concentration within nails in the dental hygiene students was significantly lower(p<0.01). Conclusions: The accumulation of fluoride in human body is not fully caused by dentifrice. However, The accumulation may occur due to toothbrushing so that it is necessary to educate the students about the right use of the dentifrice.
The purpose of this study was to examine and analyze motivation of entrance into the college, knowledge prior to the entrance, satisfaction with their major, and a sense of employment after graduation among students majoring in dental hygiene at some colleges and subdivide them by grades for comparative analysis to determine the progress of changes in general characteristics, department satisfaction, and a sense of employment among students majoring in dental hygiene for the recent three years and provide basic data for improving dental hygienic education. Questionnaires were distributed to 520 students majoring in dental hygiene at some college in South Chungcheong, South Jeolla, and North Jeolla Provinces, followed by explanation of the purport of the research and the content of the questionnaire; after completion, 513 copies were used for analysis with exception of 7 copies with insincere responses. The analysis of the data examined resulted in the following conclusions: First, Changes in Department Satisfaction among Students Majoring in Dental Hygiene As for motivation of entrance into a college, less and less students chose the department of dental hygiene through recommendation by parents or seniors while more and more students chose their major due to easy employment. Methods : Subjects were 250 dental hygiene majoring students in J area from March 20 to April 20, 2012. Data were analyzed using the statistical package SPSS WIN 12.0 for frequency, mean and standard deviation analysis, one-way ANOVA and multiple regression. Results : There were significant differences between Satisfaction and clinical practice, practice and major stress factors(p<0.01). There were significant differences between practices, satisfaction, and self-expectations(p<0.001). The explanatory power of the model was 9%(p<0.05). The combination of self-leadership, activity, interpersonal factors were very important factors and the explanatory power of the model was 8%(p<0.001). Conclusions : Self-leadership is able to decrease stress. Self-leadership is very important in clinical practice in dental hygiene majoring students.
Objectives : This study aims to investigate the relationship between the self-leadership and stress of students majoring in dental hygiene in clinical practice. This study will be helpful to cope with clinical practice effectively. Methods : Subjects were 221 dental hygiene students from 4 universities in Daegu and Gyeongbuk. Data were abalyzed by independent t-test and multiple regression analysis. Results : Stress-response was 60.36 points in high self-leadership group and 57.20 points in kow self-leadership group. It was statistically significant. Clinical practice-induced stress was made by self-expectation, rehearsal, and self-criticism. Stress was able to be overcome by self-reward and positive mind. Conclusions : It is necessary to take the curriculum into consideration which can improve the self-leadership before the clinical practice or at the early phase of clinical practice in order to ensure that the students majoring in dental hygiene are exposed to less stress arising from clinical practice and better cope with such stress.
Objectives: The aim of this study was to suggest a method for training students majoring in dental hygiene with a sense of professionalism by identifying meta-cognition, efficient learning strategies, and self-directedness necessary to become a spontaneous, self-controlled learner. Methods: A survey was conducted on 316 students majoring in dental hygiene, and collected data were analyzed using SPSS, version 23.0. A post-hoc analysis was performed using descriptive statistics, t-test, analysis of variance, and Duncan's multiple range test, and Pearson's correlation coefficient was used to assess the relationship among meta-cognition, learning strategy, and self-directedness. Results: The meta-cognition, learning strategy, and self-directedness scores of students majoring in dental hygiene were 3.25, 3.08, and 3.12, respectively. Meta-cognition was significant because the grade was lower, and the previous semester grade and major satisfaction were higher. Learning strategy was significant because the previous semester grade and major satisfaction were higher among general high school students. Self-directedness was significantly low in students whose self-conviction score was below 2.0 in terms of the previous semester grade and significantly high with high self-satisfaction. Conclusions: Instructors at the dental hygiene department should acknowledge the importance of meta-cognition, find various teaching methods to improve learning strategy, and encourage students to participate in class by enhancing self-directedness in learning.
