Factors Affecting Students' Decision to Choose Regional Public Universities: An Empirical Study from Vietnam

  • The purpose of this paper is to investigate the impact of several factors on students' decisions to attend a public institution in Vietnam's North Central area. The enrollment issue toward regional institutions is particularly critical in the Vietnam Ministry of Education and Training reforming the university enrollment process and the complicated scenario of the Covid-19 pandemic. A total of 500 students were surveyed for research samples. Data is synthesized, validated, cleaned, and analyzed using SPSS and AMOS software using methods including reliability, EFA, CFA, and SEM. The findings suggest that the proposed independent components (individual factors, study fees, advertisement, infrastructure and facilities, local features, and lastly, training activities) have a beneficial impact on students' decision to attend a public university in the North Central region. The study also found that the graduation exam outcome had a moderating effect on the relationship between registration and students' decisions. These imply targeted solutions for regional public universities to diversify training majors, improve training quality, capitalize on local advantages, increase interaction, and promote training programs and image to be more effective in attracting students and maintaining competition in the current enrollment environment.

Factors influencing stigma among college students with COVID-19 in South Korea: a descriptive study

  • Purpose: This study is descriptive research aiming to identify factors influencing the stigma experienced by college students with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), focusing on COVID-19 pandemic stress, depression, and fear of negative evaluation as the main variables. Methods: An online survey was administered to 175 college students who had been diagnosed with COVID-19 from January to May 2022 and were enrolled in universities in Seoul, Cheongju, and Daegu, South Korea. The survey collected data on pandemic stress, depression, fear of negative evaluation, and stigma. The data were analyzed using the t-test, ANOVA, the Scheffe test, Pearson's correlation coefficients, and stepwise multiple regression in SPSS/WIN 26.0. Results: We analyzed differences in stigma scores based on general characteristics of the college students and found significant differences in stigma scores by age, major satisfaction, interpersonal satisfaction, date of COVID-19 confirmation, treatment modality, and recent subjective health condition. Factors influencing stigmatization were identified as COVID-19 pandemic stress, depression, date of COVID-19 confirmation, treatment modality, recent subjective health condition, and major satisfaction, with an overall explanatory power of 37.6%. Conclusion: This study is significant as it identifies emotional changes across various aspects of pandemic stress, depression, fear of negative evaluation, and stigma among college students who have been diagnosed with COVID-19. The findings of this study suggest the development of programs to reduce psychological distress and enhance mental health management skills among these students.

Relationship between R&E Activities and Mathematics and Science Academic Achievement of Science High School Students

  • This study investigated the academic achievement of science and high school students according to the characteristics of R&E activities in mathematics and science. In addition, based on the survey results, the correlation between R&E activity characteristics and mathematics and science academic achievement was studied through correlation analysis and factor analysis between subjects. There was a difference in academic achievement in mathematics and science according to the characteristics of the R&E activity area, and the experience of R&E activity was found to be closely related to the academic achievement of related subjects. Depending on the area of R&E activity, mathematical and scientific academic achievement was found to be two factors: mathematical logic and natural understanding. Natural understanding factors significantly influenced students' academic achievement in mathematics, physics, and life sciences, and mathematical logic factors significantly influenced the academic achievement of students in chemistry and earth science subjects. In particular, mathematical logic ability was concentrated in excellent physics class students, and natural understanding ability was concentrated in excellent life science class students. Since the characteristics of the R & E activity area greatly influence the academic achievement of mathematics and science, it will significantly contribute to the selection and operation of the R & E activity area of science high school students.

Factors Influencing Resilience of Nursing Students: Focusing on Emotional Intelligence and Nursing Professionalism (간호대학생의 회복탄력성 영향 요인: 감성지능과 간호전문직관 중심으로)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between emotional intelligence, nursing professionalism, and resilience of nursing students and to identify the factors affecting resilience of nursing students. Methods: Data were collected from 205 nursing students in the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd grades of nursing colleges located in J province, and a survey was conducted from November 20th to November 30th, 2023. The collected data were analyzed through descriptive statistics, t-test, one-way ANOVA, Scheffe test, Pearson's correlation coefficient, and stepwise multiple regression analysis using SPSS/WIN 29.0 program. Result: The emotional intelligence of the subjects showed a significant positive correlation with nursing professionalism(r=.56 p<.001) and resilience(r=.75, p<.001), and nursing professionalism showed a significant positive correlation with resilience(r=.55, p<.001). The major factors influencing the resilience of nursing students were emotional intelligence, nursing professionalism, academic performance, and personality in order, and their explanatory power was 62% (F=83.05 p<.001). Conclusion: Based on the results of this study, it is necessary to develop an educational program that improves emotional intelligence and nursing professionalism in order to strengthen the resilience of nursing students.

Research on some of dental hygiene students' stress over the national examination (일부 치위생과 학생의 국가시험 스트레스 연구)

  • Objectives : The purpose of this study is to analyze the causes of stress driven by the national examination and to find out correlation between stress factors and students' general characteristics. Methods : Data were collected from self-reported questionnaires by dental hygiene students in D university in February, 2012. Results : Those having good high school GPAs (p<.05) and high preliminary test scores (p<.01) towards dental hygienist (p<.05). National license examination was the most stressful factor for 54.2% of the students. Much more stressful pressure goes to students of non-scheduled admission (p<.01), students who graduated from vocational high schools(p<.01), students with good high school GPAs (p<.05), and having high preliminary test scores(p<.05). Most of the students tended to bear the burden on national written examination with an average of 4.17. The most difficult subject was oral biology introduction (average 4.52). Oral biology introduction was more stressful to students of early admission, students graduating from vocational high schools (p<.05), students with good high school GPAs (p<.05), and students who had relatively low preliminary test scores (p<.001). Conclusions : It is crucial to reduce stress factors and to develop related programs.

The Protective Factors of Suicide Probability in Religious Male High School Students (종교계고등학교 남학생의 자살위험성 보호요인)

  • Purpose: This study was conducted to identify the protective factors that influence suicide probability in religious male high school students. Methods: The data was collected from Nov. 5 to Dec. 10, 2009. Data were collected by self-report questionnaire from 255 students selected from 2 religious male high schools in B city. The instruments for this study were the Suicide Probability Scale for Adolescence (SPS-A), Inventory Parents Peer Attachment-Revision (IPPA-R), Spiritual Well-being Scale (SWBS), and Ego-identity Scale. The data were analyzed using t-test, one-way ANOVA, Scheffe test, Pearson correlation coefficients and stepwise multiple regression with the SPSS 14.0 program. Results: The protective factors of suicide probability in religious male high school students were identified as existential spiritual well-being (${\beta}$= -.46, p<.001), self-identity (${\beta}$= -.30, p<.001), and mother attachment (${\beta}$= -.21, p<.001). These three factors explained 61.5% of the variance in suicide probability. Conclusions: The results suggest that improvement in spirituality, ego-identity, and mother attachment for religious male high school students is important to reduce the probability of suicide.

Exploration of the meaning and factors affecting the mental health perceived by university students utilizing photovoice methodology (포토보이스 조사방법을 활용한 대학생이 지각한 정신건강의 의미와 영향요인 탐색)

  • Objectives: The purpose of this study was to explore how university students perceive the mental health, what are the factors affecting the mental health in their lives. Methods: The participants of this study were eight university students who haven't participated in a class of mental health, residing in G city. This study collected the data between May 9 and June 13, 2016, and adopted a photovoice methodology of participatory action research. Results: The mental health perceived by the participants was expressed as new things re-experiencing in a familiar daily life of themselves, and things seem the same but different from others. Through discussion, the participants found that affecting factors of the mental health they negatively perceived could work on others as positive factors. Also, the participants were in search of a strategy to individually protect the mental health barriers in ways of that could contribute to mental health of the community such as conformity to social regulations. Conclusions: Based on these results, this study was meaningful in that various views were derived to prepare strategies and policy alternatives to promote university students' mental health.

The Prevalence and Factors of Irritable Bowel Syndrome in University Students (일대학교 대학생의 과민성 장 증후군 유병률 및 영향요인 연구)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine the prevalence and factors on Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) symptoms in university students. Methods: This study was descriptive survey research. The subjects were 187 university students from one university. The exclusion criteria were 1) had GI surgery 2) had severe physiologic or psychologic problems 3) had liver, bile duct, pancreatic, and intestinal disease that required treatment. The ROME III was used to diagnose IBS. Sociodemographic characteristics, general health state by SF-36, psychological health by SCL-90-R, stress by perceived stress scale, sleep disturbance by Korean sleep scale, and diet habits were measured. Data were analyzed by using SPSS 17.0. Results: Seventeen students (9.1%) had IBS by ROME III criteria, but 46% had some GI problems at that time. Abdominal pain or discomfort continued for last six months or more in 14.3%. Fiber intake, obsessive-compulsiveness, hostility, psychoticism, global severity index, positive symptom distress, role physical, bodily pain, social functioning, and mental health were significantly different between IBS group and Non IBS group. Conclusion: Over nine percent of the students were diagnosed by Rome III criteria, and almost half of them had some GI problems. Diet, personality, general health state, and psychological health were factors of IBS.

A study on the Generalized Health Beliefs and microsystemic environmental factors for University students (대학생의 일반적 건강신념과 미세체계적 환경적 요인의 관계연구)

  • In order to promote the Generalized Health Beliefs between the medical doctors and university students for more comprehensive health control, we researched the Generalized Health Beliefs invented by Dr. Cockburn and microsystemic enviromental factors. As a result, we obtained the following conclusion from the study: 1. Analytically possible answers were given by 525 students (92.6%), and among them, 356(67.8%) male students, and 196(32.2%) female students. 2. Items for Generalized Health Beliefs, Which were divided into 4 factors: 4 items for seriousness of health, 3 items for the barrier of medical utility, 4 items for the medical motivation, and 4 item for the control over illness. 3. Cronbach's alpha constant for respective analytic factors revealed that the seriousness of health; 0.92, the barrier of medical utility; 0.94, the medical motivation; 0.44, and the control over illness; 0.76. 4. The seriousness of health was influences by gender, origin of birth, residence, and frequency of visiting a doctor during one year period (<0.05). 5. The barrier of medical utility differs from origin of birth, residence, and frequency of visiting differs from origin of birth, residence, and frequency of visiting a doctor(<0.05). 6. Gender was found to be an influencing factor in the medical motivation, and gender and religion in the control over illness(<0.05).

The Relationship between Social Support, College Adjustment and Academic Adjustment among Nursing Students (간호대학생의 사회적지지가 대학생활 적응과 학업적응에 미치는 영향)

  • Objectives: The purpose of this study was to analyze factors affecting college adjustment and academic adjustment among nursing students according to social support. Methods: This study was a descriptive survey and questionnaires were collected from 290 nursing students from 2 colleges located in J province consented to participate in the study. Data were analyzed using frequency, percentage, mean, standard deviation, independent t-test, one-way ANOVA, scheff$\grave{e}$ test, pearson correlation, and hierarchical multiple regression. Results: In the model individual characteristics accounted for 17.2% of the influence on college adjustment and 9.9% of the influence on academic adjustment. In the model II with the addition of the 4 factors; tangible support, appraisal support, belonging support, self-esteem support and individual characteristics accounted for 39.5% of the influence on college adjustment and 22.8% of the influence on academic adjustment. Appraisal support and belonging support of the social support sub-variables were statistically useful as factors influencing college adjustment and self-esteem support was statistically useful as factors influencing academic adjustment. Conclusion: Social support for nursing students has great influence on college adjustment and academic adjustment of nursing students.
