An analytical study was conducted to investigate the effect of the shape and spacing of modified inclined studs used as shear connector between concrete and steel plate on the cyclic behavior of steel plate concrete (SC) shear wall. 9 different analysis cases were adopted to determine the optimized shape and spacing of stud. As the results, the skeleton curves were obtained from the load-displacement hysteresis curves, and the ultimate and yielding strengths were increased as the spacing of studs decrease. In addition, the strength of inclined studs is shown to be bigger compared to that of conventional studs. The damping ratios increased as the decrease of stiffness ratio. Finally, with decreasing the spacing distance of studs, the cumulative dissipated energy was increased and the seismic performance was improved.
Large studs were suggested not only for the design of steel-concrete composite bridges with simplified sections but also for the shear connection in precast decks requiring uniform distribution of shear pockets. Based on the push-out test results on studs with diameters of more than 25 mm, partial composite beams with 40%-degree shear connection were fabricated, and static tests were performed. The ultimate strength and horizontal shear load redistribution of partial composite beams, which have parameters of stud shank diameters and distribution, were evaluated, and group failure in the shear span was observed. Since the flexural strength of composite beams are dependent on the strength of their shear connection, the strength of the stud connection was estimated and it showed considerably higher shear strength. From the load-slip curves, the sufficient ductility and load redistribution of large studs were confirmed. Uniformly distributed large studs can provide proper ultimate behavior of composite beams.

The RC wale-steel beam stud connection may have smaller moment and shear resistance because the tensile and shear capacity of the studs are limited by the depth of RC beam. Especially, they are subjected to compressive axial load. This paper describes the experimental works to develop the connection details of RC wale-steel beam joints subjected to shear and axial loads. Shear connectors developed in this study are closed C type deformed bar, opened C type deformed bar, and U type deformed bar. From shear test, the shear performance of RC wale-steel beam joint with the developed connectors are compared with the stud connection. Test results indicated that the developed connectors were very effiecive to increase the shear strength.
The steel-concrete composite decks have high fatigue durability and deformability in comparison with ordinary RC slabs. Withal, the steel-concrete composite deck is mostly heavier than the RC slabs. We have proposed herein a new type of steel-concrete composite deck which is lighter than the typical steel-concrete composite decks. This can be achieved by arranging hollow sectional members as shear connectors, namely, half-pipe or channel shear connectors. The present study aims to experimentally investigate mechanical characteristics of the half-pipe shear connectors under the direct shear force. The shear bond capacity and deformability of the half-pipe shear connectors are strongly affected by the thickness-to-diameter ratio. Additionally, the shear strengths of the hollow shear connectors (i.e. the half-pipe and the channel shear connectors) are compared. Furthermore, shear capacities of the hollow shear connectors equivalent to headed stud connectors are also discussed.
A simple steel-concrete composite deck is developed for preventing the lateral torsional buckling of girders that are under construction and for reducing the term of works using H-shaped rolled beams as bridge girders. A new type of shear connectors is also developed for the composite behavior between a simple steel-concrete composite deck and the rolled beams by the connecting conditions between the deck and the girders. One is a connector bolt that is lengthened and split or tightened with two nuts and the other is an I-shaped rolled beam welded on a steel plate with a number of holes punched through the web. In this study, to estimate the shear strength of those shear connectors the push-out tests are performed and the test results are compared with that of the previous studies and the codes. The result of the push-out tests of the connector bolts showed that the shear performance is similar to that of the stud connector and revealed that the equation for the shear strength in the Korean Specification of Highway Bridge overestimates the shear capacity of the connector bolt whose diameter is larger than 19mm. From the push-out tests of punched I-shaped rolled beams with varying welding amounts, with the small amount of welding, shear capacity is governed by the shear capacity of welding. On the other hand, shear capacity is governed by the size of the punched I-shaped rolled beams, regardless of the amount of welding.
For the composite behavior of steel tube and inner concrete, the shear connectors should be applied to the CFT structures. However, the present design codes don't provide the design criteria that can be applied on shear connectors in the CFT structures typically filled with plain concrete. This study has been carried out to propose design criteria (shear strength and resistance factor) for the stud shear connectors in CFT structures. Experimental tests using the push-out specimens with the plain concrete blocks and finite element analysis were conducted for the purpose of verifying the main failure mode to propose the shear strength of studs in CFT structures. From the results of this study, the main failure mode of studs in CFT structures is splitting crack of concrete and this failure mode reduces shear strength of studs in CFT structures relatively to those embedded in RC blocks.
In the concept of two-parameter fatigue failure criterion, the material fatigue failure is determined by the damage degree and the current stress level. Based on this viewpoint, a residual strength degradation model for stud shear connectors under fatigue loads is proposed in this study. First, existing residual strength degradation models and test data are summarized. Next, three series of 11 push-out specimen tests according to the standard push-out test method in Eurocode-4 are performed: the static strength test, the fatigue endurance test and the residual strength test. By introducing the "two-parameter fatigue failure criterion," a residual strength calculation model after cyclic loading is derived, considering the nonlinear fatigue damage and the current stress condition. The parameters are achieved by fitting the data from this study and some literature data. Finally, through verification using several literature reports, the results show that the model can better describe the strength degradation law of stud connectors.

In general, conventional sheeting H-pile is often used as a temporary member installed upon construction of outer retaining wall at basement floor. In CBW (composite basement wall), R/C basement wall is combined with H-Pile and resists lateral soil pressure together. This paper presents an experimental results of push out shear test of CBW with stud coupler as shear connectors to combine H-Pile with R/C wall six specimens with different diameter of FT (form tie) and arrangement of shear connectors were tested to evaluate the shear capacity of the composite wall. Test results showed that shear strength increased with diameter of FT. The shear strength of shear connector in CBW could be suitably predicted by using the previous equations codified in the codes. Best correlation, especially, was found when the calculation result by the formula in AISC 360-05 was compared to test one.
The objective of this study is to investigate the actual behavior of studs in structures under earthquake load through laboratory tests and numerical simulation. A test program including eighteen specimens was devised with consideration of different concrete strengths and stud diameters. Six of specimens were subjected to monotonically increasing loading while the others were subjected to cyclic loading. Mechanical behavior including the failure mechanism, load-slip relationship, stiffness degradation, energy dissipation and the damage accumulation was obtained from the test results. An accurate numerical model based on the ABAQUS software was developed and validated against the test results. The results obtained from the finite element (FE) model matched well with the experimental results. Furthermore, based on the experimental and numerical data, the design formulas for expressing the skeleton curve were proposed and the simplified hysteretic model of load versus displacement was then established. It is demonstrated that the proposed formulas and simplified hysteretic model have a good match with the test results.
concrete deck bridges are increasingly aplied to twin- girder bridges and open-stel box girder bridges. One of the most dificult isues in the design of shear conect ors is the mater of achieving ful composite action. Many connectors in smal area require a significant section los of precast decks resulting in difficult reinforcement details. In this closer spacing than the required minimum spacing in the design codes was evaluated through static tests. Test results s howed that the ultimate strength decreased as the conector spacing was reduced. The strength enhancement was observed due to aditional reinforcement for precast slabs or for shear pockets. Thus, the design of group stud shear connection needs to anticipate failure modes and the conector failure should be induced. Based on the test results, an empirical equation consi dering stud spacing was proposed to evaluate the ultimate strength of group stud shear conection. Fatigue tests showed n o reduction in fatigue life of the group stud shear conection in the range of this research. Details of the precast decks wer e enhanced using the findings of the study.
