  • Korean Industrial Standards for lightning protection system complies with IEC standards. However, the standards are applicable only to buildings and structures more than 20 meters in high. Therefore, it is necessary to determine whether lightning protection system should be installed on structures lower than 20 meters high. This paper proposes an efficient method of assessing risk against lightning of structures lower than 20 meters high. The method suggests simplified lightning protection system and provides selecting an appropriate protection level. The suggested method assumes that structure under assessment has no lightning protection system and there is no person around the structure at the moment of lightning stroke. A simplified method of assessing the risk to human within the structure is developed by adopting the general assessment factor. The selection of a protection level is possible by comparing tolerable risk with physical damage risk caused by a direct lightning. Finally, this paper gives ways to establish surge protection measures when a structure with lightning risk is within a radius of 2km from the assessed structure even if this structure requires no lightning protection system.

  • When a building structure requires both health monitoring system and vibration control system, integrating the two systems together will be cost-effective and beneficial for creating a smart building structure with its own sensors (nervous system), processors (brain system), and actuators (muscular system). This paper presents a real-time integrated procedure to demonstrate how health monitoring and vibration control can be integrated in real time to accurately identify time-varying structural parameters and unknown excitations on one hand, and to optimally mitigate excessive vibration of the building structure on the other hand. The basic equations for the identification of time-varying structural parameters and unknown excitations of a semi-active damper-controlled building structure are first presented. The basic equations for semi-active vibration control of the building structure with time-varying structural parameters and unknown excitations are then put forward. The numerical algorithm is finally followed to show how the identification and the control can be performed simultaneously. The results from the numerical investigation of an example building demonstrate that the proposed method is feasible and accurate.

  • In this study, we analyze the structure of the transceiver coil in the inductive power transfer (IPT) system. In the IPT system, the transceiver coil design needs to have the highest magnetic coupling possible because of the relatively low magnetic coupling due to the large gap of distance without the core. The transmitting coil may be formed as a multi-layer type according to the distance between the transmitting and receiving coils if the receiving coil is configured as a multi-layer type on the inner structure of the receiving apparatus, thereby improving the magnetic coupling and system efficiency. We compare and analyze the coil magnetic coupling, and system efficiency according to the layer structure of the transmitting and receiving coils and verify the analysis by JMAG simulation. Experimental results show that the layer structure of the transceiver should be considered according to the inner space of the receiving device and the spacing distance.

  • Recently, structure safety management techniques using cutting-edge technology(Displacement senor, sensor of acceleration) has emerged as an important issue owing to the aging of infrastructure such as bridge and building. In general, the structural monitoring system for structure safety management is based on IT technology and it is expensive to install. In this paper developed an image-based structure dynamic characteristic analysis system prototype to assess the damage of structure in a more cost-effective way than traditional structure health monitoring system. The inspector can take a video of buildings or other structures with digital camera or any other devices that is passible to take video, and then using NCC calculation for image processing technique to get natural frequency. This system is analysis of damage of the structure using a compare between the frequency response ratio and functions when problems are occurs send alarm to administrator. This system is easier to install and remove than previous monitoring sensor in economical way.

  • The natural frequencies and mode shapes of a system composed of subsystems on a supporting structure have been derived approximately. The system is modeled as a discrete system, and it is assumed that the masses of subsystems are much smaller than the mass of a supporting structure. It has been found that the fundamental frequency corresponds to the supporting structure, and each higher frequency corresponds to each subsystem. A relation between the vibration amplitudes of the supporting structure and subsystems is also derived for the case when the supporting structure is excited by a harmonic force.

  • The purpose of this study is to construct a total design & manufacturing system for the Space-Truss structure. In this study, we choose the transmission tower as the study model to show the possibility of a Total System for another space truss structure. We are confident that this total system should provide more convenience, accuracy and should help to save time from the design stage to construct stage of the transmission tower.

  • The KOESWall system that minimizes the horizontal deformation of reinforced wall effectively was developed bt E&S Eng. Co., Ltd. in 1999. Due to its systematical feature i.e. isolated construction method. KOESWall system is able to use as temporary structures more economically without the facing block. In this report, it is shown that the case history of KOESWall as a temporary soil retaining structure and the field measuremnets.

  • In this Paper, a fiber Bragg grating(FBG) sensor system is described and FBGs are well-suited for long term and extremely severe experiments, where traditional strain gauges fail. In the system. a reflect wave-length measurement method which employs a tunable light source to find out the center wave-length of FBG sensor is used. We apply the FBG system to nuclear energy Power Plant for structural integrity test to measure the displacement of the structure under designed pressure and to check the elasticity of the structure by measuring the residual strain. The system works very well and it is expected that it can be used for a real-time strain, temperature and vibration detector of smart structure.
