Advanced forms of structural design (e.g., displacement-based methods) require knowledge of the non-linear force-displacement behavior of both the overall building and individual lateral load resisting elements, i.e., walls or building cores. Similarly, understanding the non-linear behaviour of the elements in a structure can also allow for a less conservative structural response to be calculated by better understanding the cracked (i.e., effective) properties of the various RC elements. Calculating the non-linear response of an RC section typically involves using 'black box' analysis packages, wherein the user may not be in complete control nor be aware of all the intricate settings and/or decisions behind the scenes. This paper introduces a user-friendly and transparent analysis program for predicting the back-bone force displacement behavior of slender (i.e., flexure controlled) RC walls, building cores or columns. The program has been validated and benchmarked theoretically against both commonly available and widely used analysis packages and experimentally against a database of 16 large-scale RC wall test specimens. The program, which is called WHAM, is written using Microsoft Excel spreadsheets to promote transparency and allow users to further develop or modify to suit individual requirements. The program is available free-of-charge and is intended to be used as an educational tool for structural designers, researchers or students.
In coastal regions, it is common to witness significant damages on low-rise buildings caused by hurricanes and other extreme wind events. These damages start at high pressure zones or weak building components, and then cascade to other building parts. The state-of-the-art in experimental and numerical aerodynamic load evaluation is to assume buildings with intact envelopes where wind acts only on the external walls and correct for internal pressure through separate aerodynamic studies. This approach fails to explain the effect of openings on (i) the external pressure, (ii) internal partition walls; and (iii) the load sharing between internal and external walls. During extreme events, non-structural components (e.g., windows, doors or rooftiles) could fail allowing the wind flow to enter the building, which can subject the internal walls to lateral loads that potentially can exceed their load capacities. Internal walls are typically designed for lower capacities compared to external walls. In the present work, an anticipated damage development scenario is modelled for a four-story building with a stepped gable roof. LES is used to examine the change in the internal and external wind flows for different level of assumed damages (starting from an intact building up to a case with failure in most windows and doors are observed). This study demonstrates that damages in non-structural components can increase the wind risk on the structural elements due to changes in the loading patterns. It also highlights the load sharing mechanisms in low rise buildings.

The cross sections of structural walls have various shapes such as T, L, and H-shaped. The L-shaped walls frequently appear in the comer of the structural plans. There are a little researches on the structural performance of L-shaped walls subjected to hi-directional loads. L-shaped wall subjected to hi-directional loads might be failed due to high compressive stress in the corner of the wall. L-shaped wall subjected to bi-directional(45$^{\circ}$ direction) loads was failed by the compressive failure more possible than that of one-directional(0$^{\circ}$ direction) loads. Therefore, in this paper, Two L-shaped wall specimens are chosen and presented. One is LCU specimen subjected to the bi-directional loads, the other is LCX specimen subjected to the one-directional loads. Also, the experimental results compared with the analytical results from nonlinear FEM analysis.
Concrete shear walls are one of the major structural lateral resisting systems in buildings. In some cases, due to the change in the occupancy of the structure or functional requirements like architectural and even mechanical ones, openings need to be provided and installed in structural walls after their construction. Providing these openings may significantly influence the structural behavior of the constructed wall. This paper considers the results of a nonlinear finite element analysis of shear walls with opening strengthened by carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) strips with different configurations. Details of bond-slip constitutive model of link elements to simulate the connections of FRP strips to concrete surface is presented. The proposed model in this research has been validated using experimental results available in the literature. The results indicated that the proposed configuration of CFRP strips significantly improved the lateral resistance and deformation capacity of the shear walls with opening.
The seismic performance and failure modes of the dual system of moment resisting frames and thin steel plate shear walls (TSPSWs) without and with one or two outrigger trusses are studied in this paper. These structural systems were utilized to resist vertical and lateral loads of 40-storey buildings. Detailed Finite element models associated with nonlinear time history analyses were used to examine seismic capacity and plastic mechanism of the buildings. The analyses were performed under increased levels of earthquake intensities. The models with one and two outriggers showed good performance during the maximum considered earthquake (MCE), while the stress of TSPSWs in the model without outrigger reached its ultimate value under this earthquake. The best seismic capacity was in favour of the model with two outriggers, where it is found that increasing the number of outriggers not only gives more reduction in lateral displacement but also reduces stress concentration on thin steel plate shear walls at outrigger floors, which caused the early failure of TSPSWs in model with one outrigger.

The necessary strength and ductility to avoid structural damage under moderate earthquake can be achieved by properly detailed transverse reinforcement in the plastic hinge zone. However, most structural walls have a higher aspect ratio(M/Vl\ulcorner) without well confined boundary regions. Therefore there is a need for adequate detailing in the plastic hinge zone, particularly boundary regions. In this paper, the fabricated interlocking spirals is introduced as a new seismic detailing for ductile behavior of the structural walls to be able to substitute for existing complicated detailing with ties. This paper also investigates the behavior characteristics of structural walls with interlocking spirals including confinement of the concrete and strength associated with flexure and shear.

This study performed lateral load testing on seventeen wood wall frames in two sections. Section one included eight tests studying structural foam sheathing of shear walls subjected to monotonic loads following the ASTM E564 test method. In this section, the wood frame was sheathed with four different types of structural foam sheathing on one side and gypsum wallboard (GWB) on the opposite side of the wall frame, with Simpson HDQ8 hold down anchors at the terminal studs. Section two included nine tests studying wall constructed with oriented strand board (OSB) only on one side of the wall frame subjected to gradually applied monotonic loads. Three of the OSB walls were tied to the baseplate with Simpson LSTA 9 tie on each stud. From the test results for Section one; the monotonic tests showed an 11 to 27 percent reduction in capacity from the published design values and for Section two; doubling baseplates, reducing anchor bolt spacing, using bearing plate washers and LSTA 9 ties effectively improved the OSB wall capacity. In comparison of sections one and two, it is expected the walls with structural foam sheathing without hold downs and GWB have a lower wall capacity as hold down and GWB improved the capacity.

This research endeavor intends to use the implicit finite element method to investigate the structural response of steel shear walls with partial plate-column connection. To this end, comprehensive verification studies are initially performed by comparing the numerical predictions with several reported experimental results in order to demonstrate the reliability and accuracy of the implicit analysis method. Comparison is made between the hysteresis curves, failure modes, and base shear capacities predicted numerically using ABAQUS software and obtained/observed experimentally. Following the validation of the finite element analysis approach, the effects of partial plate-column connection on the strength and stiffness performances of steel shear wall systems with different web-plate slenderness and aspect ratios under monotonic loading are investigated through a parametric study. While removal of the connection between the web-plate and columns can be beneficial by decreasing the overall system demand on the vertical boundary members, based on the results and findings of this study such detachment can lower the stiffness and strength capacities of steel shear walls by about 25%, on average.
An efficient, economical and practical strengthening method for hollow brick infill walls was proposed and investigated in the present study, experimentally and numerically. This method aims at increasing the overall lateral strength and stiffness of the structure by increasing the contribution of the infill walls and providing the non-bearing components of the structure with the capability of absorbing earthquake-induced energy to minimize structural damage during seismic excitations. A total of eleven full-scale infill walls strengthened with expanded mild steel plates were tested under diagonal monotonic loading to simulate the loading condition of the non-bearing walls during an earthquake. The contact surface between the plates and the wall was increased with the help of plaster. Thickness of the plates bonded to both faces of the wall and the spacing of the bolts were adopted as test parameters. The experiments indicated that the plates were able to carry a major portion of the tensile stresses induced by the diagonal loads and provided the walls walls with a considerable confining effect. The composite action attained by the plates and the wall until yielding of the bolts increased the load capacities, rigidities, ductilities and energy-absorption capacities of the walls, considerably.
One of the important factors is the infill walls in the change of the structural rigidity, ductility, dynamic and static characteristics of the structures. The infill walls are not generally included in numerical analysis of reinforced concrete (RC) structural system due to lack of suitable theory and the difficulty of calculating the recommended models. In seismic regions worldwide, the residential structures are generally RC buildings with infill wall. Therefore, understanding the contribution of the infill walls to seismic performance of buildings may have a vital importance. This paper investigates the effects of infill walls on seismic performance of the existing RC residential buildings by considering requirements of the Turkish Earthquake Code (TEC). Seismic performance levels of residential RC buildings with and without walls in high-hazard zones were determined according to the nonlinear procedure given in the code. Pushover curves were obtained by considering the effect of masonry infill walls on seismic performance of RC buildings. The analysis results showed that the infill walls beneficially effected to the rigidity, roof displacements and seismic performance of the building.
