  • This paper deals with the structural vibration characteristics for an outdoor units support of an air-conditioner. Even though main noise sources are compressor noise and fluid noise which is caused by the fan, the structural modification of the outdoor units support may affect vibration and noise. In this paper, damping ratios for two kinds of an outdoor units support of an air-conditioner are measured through the modal testing. In order to reduce the structural borne noise due to an outdoor units support of an air-conditioner, four kinds of rubber materials are selected and tested.

Enhancement of in-plane load-bearing capacity of masonry walls by using interlocking units

  • This paper presents a comparative experimental study on structural behavior of the interlocking masonry walls under in-plane cyclic loading. The main purpose of this study is to increase lateral load-bearing capacities of masonry walls by using interlocking units. The interlocking units were designed by considering failure modes of masonry walls and produced using lightweight foamed concrete. To this end, three masonry walls which are hollow, fully grouted, and reinforced were constructed with interlocking units. Also, a traditional masonry brick wall was built for comparison reasons. The walls were tested under in-plane cyclic loading. Then, structural parameters of the walls such as lateral load bearing and total energy dissipation capacities, ductility, stiffness degradation as well as failure modes obtained from the tests were compared with each other. The results have shown that the walls with the interlocking units have better structural performance than traditional masonry brick walls and they may be used in the construction of low-rise masonry structures in rural areas to improve in-plane structural performance.

Composition and Temperature Dependence of Structural Changes in Borosilicate Glasses by Spectrometer (분광계에 의한 Borosilicate계 글라스의 조성 및 온도의존성 평가)

  • We investigated the particularity of temperature and composition changes in $xNa_2O{\cdot}(52.5-x)B_2O_3{\cdot}47.5SiO_2$ glasses by use of FT-IR, $^{11}B$ NMR, Raman spectrometer. From FT-IR and $^{11}B$ NMR spectrometer, we thought that tetrahedral boron, $BO_4$ units are created $N_4$ increasing tendency generated near $600^{\circ}C$. It's expected that composition ana heat treatment directly contributed to structural changes, this changes are following to $Na_2O$ increasing or decreasing. caused by $N_4\;and\;BO_4$ units are caused by relatively increasing or decreasing in the glasses' structure. Particularly, $BO_4$ units are converted to $BO_3$ units after $600^{\circ}C$ heat treatment for 50h in the composition of $x<18(R<0.5,\;R=Na_2O/B_2O_3\;mol\%)$. On the order hand, $BO_3$ units are converted to, $BO_4$ units after $600^{\circ}C$ heat treatment for 50h in the composition of $x{\geq}18\;(R>0.5)$. This particularity of composition and temperature dependence of structural changes are similarly represented by Raman analysis results.

  • In this paper, three kinds of the existing idealized structural units, namely the idealized beam-column units the idealized unstiffened plate unit and the idealized stiffened plate unit are expanded to deal with the excessive tension-deformation effects. A simplified mechanical model far the stress-strain relationship of steel members under tensile load is suggested. The 1/3-scale hull model for a leander class frigate under sagging moment tested by Dow is analyzed, and it is shown that the excessive tension-deformation is a significant factor affecting the progressive collapse behavior, particularly in the post-collapse range.

Reliability Analysis for Fracture of Concrete Armour Units (콘크리트 피복재의 단면파괴에 대한 신뢰성 해석)

  • A fracture or breakage of the concrete armor units in the primary cover layer of breakwaters is studied by using the reliability analysis which may be defined as the structural stability. The reliability function can be derived as a function of the angle of rotation that represents the rocking of armor units quantitatively. The relative influences of all of random variables related to the material and geometric properties on the fracture of armor units is analyzed in detail. In addition, the probability of failure for the fracture of individual armor unit can be evaluated as a function of the incident wave height. Finally, Bernoulli random process and the allowable fracture ratio may be introduced together in this paper, by which the probability of failure of a breakwater due to the fracture of armer units can be obtained straightforwardly. It is found that the probability of failure of a breakwater due to the fracture of armor units may be varied with the several allowable fracture ratios. Therefore, it should be necessary to consider the structural stability as well as the hydraulic stability for the design of breakwaters with multi-leg slender concrete armor units of large size under wave action in deep water.

Stochastic Reliability Analysis of Armor Units of Rubble-Mound Breakwaters Subject to Multiple Loads (다중하중에 따른 경사제 피복재의 추계학적 신뢰성 해석)

  • A stochastic reliability analysis model has been developed for evaluating the time-dependent stability performance of armor units of rubble-mound breakwaters subjected to the multiple loads of arbitrary magnitudes which could be occurred randomly. The initial structural capacities and the damage rates of armor units of rubble-mound breakwaters could be estimated as a function of the incident wave height with a given return period by using the modified Hudson's formula and Melby's formula. The structural stability performances of armor units of rubble-mound breakwaters could be analyzed in detail through the lifetime reliability investigations according to the limit states such as the serviceability or ultimate limit state and the conditions of multiple loads. Finally, repair intervals for the structural management of armor units of rubble-mound breakwaters could quantitatively be evaluated by a new approach suggested in this paper that has been based on the target probability for repair and the accumulated probabilities of failure obtained from the present stochastic reliability analysis model.

  • This paper describes the structural analysis result and load test result of accident EMU(Electric Multiple Units). Structural analysis and load test of EMU were performed for the criteria of safety assessment. Structural analysis using commercial I-DEAS software provided important information on the stress distribution and load transfer mechanisms as well as the amount of damages during rolling stock crash. The purpose of the load test is to evaluate a safety which carbody structure shall be considered fully sufficient rigidity so as to satisfy proper system function under maximum load and operating condition. The results have been used to provide the critical information for the criteria of safety assessment.

  • In static analysis of a variety of structures, the matrix method of structural analysis is the most widely used and powerful analysis method. However, this method has drawback requiring high-performance computers with many memory units and fast processing units in the case of analyzing complex and large structures accurately. Therefore, it's very difficult to analyze these structures accurately in personal computers. For overcoming the drawback of the matrix method of structural analysis, authors suggest transfer stiffness coefficient method(TSCM). The TSCM is very suitable to a personal computer because the concept of the TSCM is based on the transfer of the stiffness coefficient for an analytical structure. In this paper, the static analysis algorithm for frame structures is formulated by the TSCM. We confirm the validity of the proposed method through the compare of computation results by the TSCM and the NASTRAN.

  • This paper describes 3D Dimensional Measurement(EDM testing) and tensile testing results of carbody structure for crashed EMU(Electric Multiple Units). Tensile tests were performed on two different types of specimens in order to evaluate the strength changes before and after damages, obtained from plastic deformed area and nondeformed region of the crashed EMU. And Structural analysis of EMU was performed for the criteria of safety assessment. Lateral-resisting Structural Systems for Tall Modular Buildings (모듈러 건축물의 수평력 저항 구조시스템)

  • Modular buildings are constructed by assembling modular units which are prefabricated in a factory and delivered to the site. However, due to a problem of noise between floors, concrete slab is usually poured at the top or bottom level of a modular unit in Korea. This greatly increases the weight of buildings, but designing vertical members of modular units to resist overall gravity loads is very inefficient. In this study, considering domestic building construction practices, feasible structural systems for tall modular buildings are proposed in which separate steel frames and reinforced concrete core walls are designed to resist gravity and lateral loads. To verify performance, a three-dimensional structural analysis has been performed with two types of prototype buildings, i.e., a residential building and a hotel. From the results, wind-induced lateral displacements and seismic story drifts are examined and compared with their limit values. Between the two kinds of buildings, the efficiency of the proposed system is also evaluated through a comparison of the weight of structural components. Finally, the effect of a floor diaphragm on the overall behavior is analyzed and discussed.
