A framework for reliability analysis of structural components and systems under conditions of statistical and model uncertainty is presented. The Bayesian parameter estimation method is used to derive the posterior distribution of model parameters reflecting epistemic uncertainties. Point, predictive and bound estimates of reliability accounting for parameter uncertainties are derived. The bounds estimates explicitly reflect the effect of epistemic uncertainties on the reliability measure. These developments are enhance-ments of second-moment uncertainty analysis methods developed by A. H-S. Ang and others three decades ago.

An attempt has been made to measure existing steel stress using magnetoelasticity. A device has been developed and used for the measurement of magnetism in response to the deformation of a steel bar. The proposed technique can be used for the assessment of existing reinforced concrete structures by the measurements of steel stress embedded inside concrete. A traditional technique requires to break the existing steel bar to measure existing strain. However, the proposed technique is developed to measure the stress without damaging the steel bar. A successful application of magnetoelasticity depends on the establishment of relationship between elastic and magnetic response due to loading. To investigate the correlation between the two, steel bars are loaded in tension under uniaxial loading while the magnetic reading is recorded. Based on the test results, equations are suggested to predict stress for steel bars with different diameters.

To find the safety and serviceability of bridges, it must consider the behaviour of structural member and evaluation of the exact resistance of the member subjected to external loads. To evaluate the behaviour and the resistance of the structural member, it must measure the strains and displacements of the structures. Usually we use the strain gauge to measure the strains. When, the bridge is long span and high pier, the setting of strain gauge is very difficult and not economic. It is not recommendable for the use of strain gauge, when the structural member has many cracks and moisture. Thus, to make up for this demerits, the algorithm of strain analysis by measured displacements data is proposed.

It has been known that buildings having inappropriate expansion joints in their spacings may be subject to exterior damages due to extensive cracks on the outer walls under service loads, and structural damages due to excessive moment induced by temperature changes at ultimate load conditions. Rather inconsistent code provisions are available regarding spacings of expansion joints from different foreign structural codes and even worse, no quantiative measure on spacings is given in our codes for building structures. In order to establish a rational measure on the spacing of expansion joints, theoretical approaches are taken in this study. The developed theoretical formula is, then, converted to design chart for structural designer's convenience in its use. The chart considers both service and ultimate load stages.
A method used for measuring the stiffness of hinging reinforced concrete frame structures is developed. The so called Stiffness Measure Method is used to evaluate the tangent stiffness of hinge regions while the structure is responding in nonlinear ranges. Eigenvector methods for nonlinear response have not been especially popular because of the need for regenerating eigenvectors as the time history proceeds. In the present work the eigenvectors sets and corresponding nonlinear state variables, i. e., the tangent stiffnesses of the hinge regions, are stored. There is an expectation that previously generated eigenvectors can be reused as the analysis proceeds. The stiffness measure is used to compare the current tangent stiffnesses of hinge regions with those of previously stored eigenvectors sets. Since eigenvector calculations are diminished the method is effective in reducing computational effort for reinforced concrete frame structures subjected to strong ground motions.

As concrete structures are heated, thermal strain can be developed. Because of the boundary conditions, the thermal stress may be arisen. Thermal strain and temperature were measured simultaneously using an optical fiber sensor. Fiber Bragg Grating Sensor(FBG sensor) was used in the measurement. Because it can measure the strains more than two points with one line, it was possible to measure both thermal strain and temperature with one line. To compare data measured by FBG sensor, strain and temperature were measured using strain gauge and thermocouple. The FBG sensor could measure the strain under the temperature greater than $60^{\circ}C$ but strain gauge couldn't. Both the FBG temperature sensor and thermocouple could measure the temperature and the results are related each other linearly.
A new error measure for a static finite element analysis is proposed. This error measure is a modification to the Zienkiewicz and Zhu energy norm. The new error estimator is a global error measure for the analysis and is independent of finite element model size and internal stresses, hence it is readily transportable to other error calculations. It is shown in this paper the the new error estimator also produces conservative error measurements, making it a suitable procedure to adopt in commerical packages.

This paper presents new testability measure based on learning, which can be useful in the deterministic process of test pattern generation algorithms. This testability measure uses the structural information that are obtained by teaming. The proposed testability measure searches for test pattern that can early detect the conflict in case of the hardest decision problems. On the other hand in case of the easiest decision problem, it searches for test pattern that likely results in the least conflict. The proposed testability measure reduces CPU time to generate test pattern that accomplishes the same fault coverage as that of the distance-based measure.
Structural failures are undesirable events that devastate the construction industry resulting in loss of life, injury, huge property loss, and also affect the economy of the region. Roof truss failures occur mainly due to excessive loading, improper fabrication, deterioration, inadequate repair, etc. Although very rare, a roof truss may even fail due to inappropriate location of supports. One such case was reported from the recent failure of a steel roof truss used in an indoor stadium at Kargil in India. Kargil region, being mountainous in nature, receives heavy snowfall and hence the steel roof trusses are designed for heavy snow loads. Due to inappropriate support location, the indoor stadium's steel roof truss had failed under heavy snow load for which it was designed and became an interesting structural engineering problem. The failure observed was primarily in terms of yielding of the bottom chord under the supports, leading to partial collapse of the roof truss. This paper summarizes the results of laboratory tests and analytical studies that focused on the validation of the proposed remedial measure for rehabilitating this distressed steel roof truss. The study presents the evaluation of (i) significant reduction in strength and stiffness of the distressed truss resulting in its failure, (ii) desired recovery in both strength and stiffness of the rectified truss contributed by the proposed remedial measure. Three types of models i.e., ideal truss model, as build truss model and rectified truss model were fabricated and tested under monotonic loading. The structural configuration and support condition varied in all the three models to represent the ideal truss, distressed truss and the rectified truss. To verify the accuracy of the experimental results, an analytical study was carried out and the results of this analytical study are compared with the experimental ones.

Structural acceleration regulation is a means of managing structural response energy and enhancing the performance of civil structures undergoing large seismic events. A quadratic output regulator that minimizes a measure including the total structural acceleration energy is developed and tested on a realistic non-linear, semi-active structural control case study. Suites of large scaled earthquakes are used to statistically quantify the impact of this type of control in terms of changes in the statistical distribution of controlled structural response. This approach includes the impulses due to control inputs and is shown to be more effective than a typical displacement focused control approach, by providing equivalent or better performance in terms of displacement and hysteretic energy reductions, while also significantly reducing peak story accelerations and the associated damage and occupant injury. For earthquake engineers faced with the dilemma of balancing displacement and acceleration demands this control approach can significantly reduce that concern, reducing structural damage and improving occupant safety.
