Ad-hoc vibration monitoring system for a stress-ribbon footbridge: from design to operation

  • Pedro $G{\acute{o}}mez$ Bosque footbridge is a slender and lightweight structure that creates a pedestrian link over the Pisuerga River, Valladolid, Spain. This footbridge is a singular stress ribbon structure with one span of 85 m consisting on a steel plate and precast concrete slabs laying on it. Rubber pavement and a railing made of stainless steel and glass complete the footbridge. Because of its lively dynamics, prone to oscillate, a simple and affordable structural health monitoring system was installed in order to continuously evaluate its structural serviceability and to estimate its modal parameters. Once certain problems (conditioning and 3D orientation of the triaxial accelerometers) are overcome, the monitoring system is validated by comparison with a general purpose laboratory portable analyzer. Representative data is presented, including acceleration magnitudes and modal estimates. The evolution of these parameters has been analysed over one-year time.

Response of non-structural components mounted on irregular RC buildings: comparison between FE and EC8 predictions

  • This paper investigates the seismic response of lightweight acceleration-sensitive non-structural components (NSCs) mounted on irregular reinforced concrete (RC) primary structures (P-structures) using non-linear dynamic finite element (FE) analysis. The aim of this paper is to study the influence of NSC to P-structure vibration period ratio, peak ground acceleration, NSC to P-structure height ratio, and P-structure torsional behaviour on the seismic response of the NSCs. Representative constitutive models were used to simulate the behaviour of the RC P-structures. The NSCs were modelled as vertical cantilevers fixed at their bases with masses on the free ends and varying lengths so as to match the frequencies of the P-structures. Full dynamic interaction is considered between the NSCs and P-structures. A set of 21 natural and artificial earthquake records were used to evaluate the seismic response of the NSCs. The numerical results indicate that the behaviour of the NSCs is significantly influenced by the investigated parameters. Comparison between the FE results and Eurocode (EC8) predictions suggests that EC8 underestimates the response of NSCs mounted on the flexible sides of irregular RC P-structures when the fundamental periods and heights of the NSCs match those of the P-structures. The perceived cause of this discrepancy is that EC8 does not take into account the amplification in the dynamic response of NSCs induced by the torsional behaviour of RC P-structures.

  • There is a concern with worldwide deterioration of highway bridges, particularly reinforced concrete. The advantages of fibre reinforced plastic(FRP) composites over conventional materials motivate their use in highway bridges for replacement of structures. Recently, an FRP deck has been installed on a state highway, located in New York State, as an experimental project. In this paper, a systematic approach for analysis of this FRP deck bridge is presented. Multi-step linear numerical analyses have been performed using the finite element method to study the structural behavior and the possible failure mechanism of the FRP deck-superstructure system Deck's self-weight and ply orientations at the interface between steel girders and FRP deck are considered in this study. From this research, the results of the numerical analyses were corroborated with field test results. Analytical results reveal several potential failure mechanism for the FRP deck and truss bridge system The results presented in this study may be used to propose engineering design guideline for new and replacement FRP bridge deck structure.

Analysis of RC Beams Strengthened with Fiber Sheets (섬유시트로 보강된 RC 보의 해석기법 연구)

  • This paper presents a nonlinear analysis method for the reinforced concrete beams strengthened by the external bonding of high strength, lightweight fiber sheets on the tension face of the beams. The method is based on the results of experimental studies. The experimental study involved tensile tests of 120 specimens to evaluate the tensile properties of fiber sheets(carbon, glass, and aramid fiber) and bending tests of 75 beams strengthened with various types of fiber sheets to evaluate the flexural capacities. Based on these experimental results, reasonable rupture strains of the fiber sheets were estimated. The nonlinear flexural analysis considered nonlinear flexural stresses as compressive and tensile stresses of concrete, load-deflection curves, and rupture strains of fiber sheets. The nonlinear flexural analysis accurately predicts the load-deflection response and the flexural behavior of the retrofitted beams.

  • The HBS slab is a method in which a lightweight sieve is installed on top of the psc slab and two ribs of the neighboring psc slab are combined with ribs formed by the site concrete to act as a single member on the same axis. The purpose of this study is to implement the performance comparison with the existing method through the experimental study on the PSC slab method. In this study, the HBS slab was developed as a method to improve the limit of the existing method and the performance comparison with the existing method is tried to verify its superiority. The comparison of the structural performance with the existing method is carried out through the experimental study of the HBS slab, and the structural performance against the bending performance and shear and the bonding performance between the pc beam and the hbs slab are examined and compared with the existing method through the theoretical method.

A Study on the Properties of Foamed Concrete with Plaster Using the Experimental Design (실험계획법을 이용한 석고 혼입 기포콘크리트의 특성에 관한 연구)

  • This research was performed through the experimental design to get the statistical analysis on foamed concrete mixed plaster with hydrogen peroxide. In this experiment, we set the ratio of each material, which part of lightweight concrete, as experimental factors and evaluated on the mechanical properties by statistical analysis for response variables obtained from experiments. Experimental factors are plaster replacement, water binder ratio, and hydrogen peroxide ratio. Response variables are dry density, compressive strength, and flexural strength. Mixing design of the foamed concrete set up a total of 15 experimental points by Box-Behnken (BB) method of the response surface analysis. Thus, the results of a study were summarized as follows. Values of the probability in experimental factors (plaster replacement, water binder ratio and hydrogen peroxide ratio) on the response variables were estimated to be significant at the 95% of confidence limit. On response surface analysis for dry density of foamed concrete, water binder ratio and hydrogen peroxide ratio were estimated to be significant (${\alpha}$ = 0.05), and the relationship between the amount of void and the water content for dry density is inverse proportional. On response surface analysis for the compressive strength of foamed concrete, water binder ratio, hydrogen peroxide ratio and (hydrogen peroxide ratio)$^2$ was estimated to be significant (${\alpha}$ = 0.05). On response surface analysis for the flexural strength of foamed concrete, water binder ratio, hydrogen peroxide ratio was estimated to be significant (${\alpha}$ = 0.05). Through multi response surface analysis, we found the optimal area that meets performance goals.

Cost Analysis of Composite Method Using Hollow-PC Column (중공 PC기둥을 적용한 복합공법의 공사비 분석)

  • Most of studies on PC method aim at the structural analysis and development of PC members, and studies on the construction management aspect are insufficient. Therefore, this study tries to investigate 'hallow PC column composite method(HPC composite method)' from the viewpoint of construction management and analyze the construction cost of the composite method. On the assumption that each comparative method was applied to the zone, the difference in construction cost between the two methods was analyzed. As a result, HPC composite method increased the initial investment cost because of its factor technology, but reduced transport cost, lifting cost, and installation cost through lightweight columns. This study analyzed only the difference in construction cost of HPC composite method so that it has the limitation in evaluating its economy. Therefore, to evaluate the economy of HPC composite method, it is considered to research more the construction cost of HPC composite method.

Analytical Study on Structural Behaviors of Post-Tensioned Column-Base Connections for Steel Modular Structures (철골 모듈러 구조물의 포스트텐션 기둥-바닥 접합부 거동에 대한 해석적 연구)

  • Modular structures are relatively lightweight compared to reinforced-concrete or steel structures. However, it is difficult to achieve structural integrity between the columns of unit modules in a modular structure, which causes undesirable effects on the lateral force resistance capacity against wind and earthquake loads. This is more prominent in modular structures whose overall heights are greater. Hence, a post-tensioned modular structural system is proposed herein to improve the lateral force resistance capacity of a typical modular structure. A post-tensioned column-base connection, which is the main component of the proposed modular structural system, is configured with shapes and characteristics that allow inducing self-centering behaviors. Finite element analysis was then performed to investigate the hysteretic behaviors of the post-tensioned column-base connection. The analysis results show that the hysteretic behaviors are significantly affected by the initial tension forces and beam-column connection details at the base.

Effects of dead loads on the static analysis of plates

  • The collapse of structures due to snow loads on roofs occurs frequently for steel structures and rarely for reinforced concrete structures. Since the most significant difference between these structures is related to their ability to handle dead loads, dead loads are believed to play an important part in the collapse of structures by snow loads. As such, the effect of dead loads on displacements and stress couples produced by live loads is presented for plates with different edge conditions. The governing equation of plates that takes into account the effect of dead loads is formulated by means of Hamilton's principle. The existence and effect of dead loads are proven by numerical calculations based on the Galerkin method. In addition, a closed-form solution for simply supported plates is proposed by solving, in approximate terms, the governing equation that includes the effect of dead loads, and this solution is then examined. The effect of dead loads on static live loads can be explained explicitly by means of this closed-form solution. A method that reflects the effects of dead loads on live loads is presented as an example. The present study investigates an additional factor in lightweight roof structural elements, which should be considered due to their recent development.

Experimental validations of fire-resistant materials for protecting LPG small storage tank from building fires (건물 화재 시 LPG소형저장탱크 보호용 화재 저항 재료 성능 실증)

  • The purpose of this study is to validate thermal hinderance effects, i.e., feasibilities, of fire-proof structure for LPG tank exposed to fire from adjacent burning building. The panel materials suggested for the fire-proof structure are (1) 10 mm-thick wood, (2) wood with fireproof coating, (3) 75 mm-thick Expanded Polystyrene, (4) 75 mm-thick glass wool filled sandwich panel, and (5) 75 mm-thick autoclaved lightweight concrete. The square planar fire source of 1 ㎡, a matrix of nozzles releasing 120-140 g/s of LPG, is used to heat up the wall and the tank beyond, mimicking heat transfer from burning exterior wall finishes. The feasibility is tested by inspecting structural integrity after test, and then by examining temperatures at both sides of panels and tank's front surface as well as heat fluxes. As a result, it can be concluded that, among the suggested sample materials, fire-proof wall with ALC panel only showed the feasibility for explosion prevention with the proven evidences of structural integrity and least increase in temperature of tank.
