  • Geological terminology used in Korea which has been politically separated for the last 50 years, were compared. For this study, geological terminology used in 'Geology of Korea' published in North Korea (1996), 'Geology of Korea' published in South Korea (1999) and other geological publications were compared. Among the 1272 geological terminology used in North Korea, 49 are for geochronology, 201 for mineralogy, 199 for petrology, 257 for structural geology, 93 for paleontology, and 473 for general geology. Out of these geological terminology, 657 (51.7%) have the same pronunciation and meaning as those used in South Korea 370 (29.1%) are analogous words, and 245 (19.2%)cannot be understood because of differences in the means of expression. Differences in geological terminology used in the two Koreas are thought to be mainly caused by language used only in North Korea, different foreign language interpretation, different initial law application, new connecting word construction, and influence from different cultures.

  • Geology, hydrogeology, and geochemistry are the main technical siting factors of a geological repository for spent nuclear fuels. This paper focused on how rock's different geological conditions, such as topography, soils, rock types, structural geology, and geological events, influence the functions of the geological repository. In the context, the site selection criteria of various countries were analyzed with respect to the geological conditions. Each country established the criteria based on its important geological backgrounds. For example, it was necessary for Sweden to take into account the effect of ice age on the land uplift and sea level change, whereas Japan defined seismic activity and volcanism as the main siting factors of the geological repository. Therefore, the results of the paper seems to be helpful in preparing the siting criteria of geological repository in Korea.

  • Paleomagnetic investigations have been carried out on the Tertiary sedimentary formations (Yeonil Group) in Pohang basin, southeastern Korea. A total of 215 samples were collected from 26 sites. Progressive thermal demagnetization indicates that many samples have unstable magnetization and do not reveal a characteristic direction. However, some samples from the lower and upper Duho Formation show a characteristic direction $D/I=7.8^{\circ}/48.3^{\circ}$ (${\alpha}_{95}=3.7^{\circ}$, k=174.1). Stepwise thermal demagnetization data show that some samples from the Hagjeon and middle Duho Formations reveal great-circle distributions moving from the present to a reversed direction of geomagnetic field. The mean of intersection points of the great-circles is nearly antipodal to the characteristic normal direction of the lower and upper Duho Formation. We infer that the Hagjeon Formation was formed during the reversed polarity chron C5B (16.2~14.7 Ma) and the Duho Formation 14.7~11.6 Ma based on our results and previous paleontologic and age dating data. Paleomagnetic direction for the Middle Miocene of Korea, analysed from the combined results of stable endpoints and great circles, is $D/I=8.7^{\circ}/53.9^{\circ}$ (${\alpha}_{95}=4.2^{\circ}$, k=74.8), and the corresponding paleopole is Lat./Long.=$82.7^{\circ}/230.2^{\circ}$ (${\delta}p=2.8^{\circ}$, ${\delta}m=5.9^{\circ}$). On the basis of this, we interpret that the opening of the East sea (Japan sea) or the synchronous clockwise rotation of the Southwest Japan exerted no structural influence on the Yeonil Group in the Middle Miocene.

  • Talc deposit of pipe-like form occurrs in the lower part of the Hyangsanri Dolomite with a strike of N40 -50 E and a dip of 40 -50 NW which is one formation of the Ogcheon Super Croup. The pipi-like ore body plunge at about $40^{\circ}$ to the west and are parallel to the lineation developed in the area. Structural formulae of tales occurred in this deposit are close to the ieal composition $Mg_6Si_8O_{20}(OH)_4$ showing limited deviation from ideal one. Substitution of Al for Si in tetrahedral site is of little or nothing ranging 0-0.04 and octahedral occupancy is close to six ranging 5.88-5.98 atoms per unit cell. Predominant octahedaral cation is Mg and proportion of divalent cations is generally over 97percent. Calcite -dolomite thermometry is obtained by determining the mol % $MgCO_3$using of EPMA and XRD methods. The peak metamorphic temperature can be estimated at $470{\pm}30^{\circ}C$ in the area whereas carbonates occurred at near talc ore show lower temperature than $400^{\circ}C$ that the calcite solvus limit is not well established. It indicates that the talc deposit was formed at the lower temperature that the metamorphic temperature. Cosequently, the formation of talc by metamorphism is questionable and the alteratin zone developed around the talc ore is very limited. The occurrence of talc ore in the dolomite as well as mineralogy, calcite-dolomite geothermometry, chlorite geothermometry, field and microscopic evidence suggest that siliceous ascending hydrothermal solution along the fracture is responsible for the formation of talc. It was considered that the slight fracturing of dolomite was formed by deformation prior to the mineralization.

  • The western Gyeonggi Massif, where records evidence of Phanerozoic subduction/collision tectonics, is an important area to understand the crustal evolutionary history of the Korean Peninsula. This study presents geometric and kinematic characteristics of the geological structures of the Taean Formation in the Gomseom area, southwestern Gyeonggi Massif. We interpreted the geometric relationships between structural elements, and conducted stereographic and down-plunge projections for structural domains. As a result, at least three different deformational events ($D_1$, $D_2$ and $D_3$) are recognized in the study area. In the first deformational event ($D_1$), regional foliations being well defined by the preferred orientation of muscovite and biotite were formed. In the second deformational event ($D_2$), NNE-trending low-angle contractional faults and related crenulation lineations/cleavages were formed. The crenulation lineations shallowly plunge toward SSW~SSE or NNW~NNE. In the third deformational event ($D_3$), SE-plunging folds and NE-trending high-angle faults were formed as 'fault-related fold' and 'fold-accommodation fault', indicating that the $D_3$ folds and faults are genetically linked to each other. This contribution provides important insights into the structural evolution of the Taean Formation along western Gyeonggi Massif, where had evolved as subduction/collisional orogenic belts in the East Asia.

  • The ores of the Bobae mine are mainly composed of sericite and quartz, and with appreciable amount of some other minerals such as andalusite. pyrophyllite, and albite, etc.. Sericite occurs in various a1teration zones having different crystal size and habit. Sericites can be c1assified into two types based on the crystal size; fine-grained and coarse-grained sericite. Fine-grained sericite occurs as an aggregate. Mineralogical characterizations of both types of sericites have been studied with various methods. Lattice parameters of two types of sericites occurred in various alteration zones are almost identical. but b parameter of coarse-grained sericite appears to be slight1y bigger than that of fine-grained aggregates. Average structural formula of fine- and coarse-grained sericite is $K_{1.44}Al_{3.86}(Si_{6.35}Al_{1.65})O_{20}(OH)_4$ and $K_{1.71}Al_{3.82}(Si_{6.20}Al_{1.80})O_{20}(OH)_4$, respectively. Structural formulae of coarse-grained sericites are close to that of muscovite. Infrared spectra show that there is slight distinction between sericites occurred in andalusite-pyrophyllite zone and other subzones. IR spectra of sericites due to Si-O vibration ($540{\sim}530cm^{-1}$) tend to shift to smaller wavenumber side from center to outer alteration zone. All samples have litt1e or no interstratified minerals. and this is demonstrated by Ir and DTA-TG results. It indicates that the Bobae mine is formed at relatively high temperature. That the ratio of quartz to sericite in ores varies greatly indicates that several discontinuous hydrothermal alteration processes have been involved.

  • The Baekildo fault, a dextral strike-slip fault developed in Baekil Island, Goheung-gun, controls the distribution of tuffaceous sandstone and lapilli tuff and shows a complex fracture system around it. In this study, we examined the spatial variation in the geometry and connectivity of the fracture system by using circular sampling and topological analysis based on a detailed fracture trace map. As a result, both intensity and connectivity of the fracture system are higher in tuffaceous sandstone than in lapilli tuff. Furthermore, the degree of the orientation dispersion, intensity, and average length of fracture sets vary depending on the along-strike variation in structural position in the tuffaceous sandstone. Notably, curved fractures abutting the fault at a high angle occur at a fault bend. Based on the detailed observation and analyses of the fracture system, we conclude as follows: (1) the high intensity of the fracture system in the tuffaceous sandstone is caused by the higher content of brittle minerals such as quartz and feldspar. (2) the connectivity of the fracture system gets higher with the increase in the diversity and average length of the fracture sets. Finally, (3) the fault bend with geometric irregularity is interpreted to concentrate and disturb the local stress leading to the curved fractures abutting the fault at a high angle. This contribution will provide important insight into various geologic and structural factors that control the development of fracture systems around faults.

  • Structural analysis for a large-scale fault in Maegok-dong, Ulsan, was carried out based on filed-works to investigate the geometric and kinematic characteristics of the fault as well as its Quaternary slip. As results, a series of repeated stratigraphy, minor faults, fracture zones, and deformation band clusters are observed over a distance of about 100 m in the first studied site consisting of sedimentary rocks, which may indicate the damage zone of a large-scale fault in this site. In the second site, mainly composed of granitic clastic rocks, a large-scale thrust fault is expected based on low-angle dipping faults showing branched and/or merged patterns. Age of the last slip on this fault was restrained as after 33,275 ± 355 yr BP based on radiocarbon dating for organic material included in the gouge zone. Dimension of fault damage zone, dominant sense of slip, and age of the slip event associated with the fault suggest that these structures have a close relationship with the Ulsan Fault and/or Yeonil Tectonic Line, which are well-known large-scale neotectonic structural features around the study area. Therefore, it is necessary to study the characteristics of the faults in detail based on structural geology and paleoseismology in order to ensure seismic and geologic stability of the buildings under construction, and to prevent geologic hazards in this area.

  • This paper provides a new geomorphological approach for survey of potential flood damages and for preparation of cartographically accurate flood maps. floods are possibly the worst disasters we have recorded in he past and may expect in the future. Interpretation of aerial photographs of river basin enables us to determine the nature of floods by investigating the maximum extent of inundated areas in the past. Most of the typical dangerous spots, highly susceptible for flood disasters can be systematically identified by analyzin lithologic, structural, and geomorphic cycle.

  • This manuscript introduces the Capacity Design Methodology in the Building Standard Law of Japan revised at 2000, June. The Building Standard Law of Japan was revised into the performance-based design format following the trend of international. The structural performance was evaluated for two limiting states; soundness limit state and safety limit state. The design seismic forces were determined on taking into consideration (a)the properties of the planned building, (b)amplification by local surfaces geology, and (c)soil-structure interaction.
