Optimization for Configuration and Material Cost of Helical Pile Using Harmony Search Algorithm (하모니서치 알고리즘을 이용한 헬리컬 파일의 형상 및 재료비 최적 설계기법에 대한 연구)

  • The helical pile is a manufactured steel pile consisting of one or more helix-shaped bearing plates affixed to a central shaft. This pile is installed by rotating the shaft into the ground to support structural loads. Advantages of the helical pile are no need for boring or grout process, and ability to install a pile foundation with relatively light devices. In this study, an optimized design method for helical piles is proposed to minimize the material cost with consideration of the load bearing capacity obtained by the cylindrical shear method. The harmony search meta-heuristic algorithm was adopted for optimization process. The optimized design was verified by comparing with the 2009 International building code. It is noted that the optimization for the configuration of helical piles along with material cost proves to be an out-performed tool in designing helical pile foundation with economic feasibility.

Study on the Design and Analysis of a 4-DOF Robot for Trunk Rehabilitation (체간 재활을 위한 4-DOF 로봇의 설계 및 분석에 관한 연구)

  • This paper presents the development of a robotic system for rehabilitation of the trunk's ability to maintain postural control under different balance conditions. The system, developed with extensive input from rehabilitation and biomedical engineering experts, consists of a seat mounted on a robotic mechanism capable of moving it with four degrees of freedom (3 rotational and 1 translational). The seat surface has built in instrumentation to gauge the movements of the user's center of pressure (COP) and it can be moved either to track the movements of the COP or according to operator given commands. The system allows two types of leg support. A ground mounted footrest allows participation of legs in postural control while a seat connected footrest constrains the leg movement and limits their involvement in postural control. The design evolution over several prototypes is presented and computer aided structural analysis is used to determine the feasibility of the designed components. The system is pilot tested by a stroke patient and is determined to have potential for use as a trunk rehabilitation tool. Future works involve more detailed studies to evaluate the effects of using this system and to determine its efficacy as a rehabilitation tool.

  • Metamodels have been developed with a variety of design optimization techniques in the field of structural engineering over the last decade because they are efficient, show excellent prediction performance, and provide easy interconnections into design frameworks. To construct a metamodel, a sequential procedure involving steps such as the design of experiments, metamodeling techniques, and validation techniques is performed. Because validation techniques can measure the accuracy of the metamodel, the number of presampled points for an accurate kriging metamodel is decided by the validation technique in the sequential kriging metamodel. Because the interpolation model such as the kriging metamodel based on computer experiments passes through responses at presampled points, additional analyses or reconstructions of the metamodels are required to measure the accuracy of the metamodel if existing validation techniques are applied. In this study, we suggest a sensitivity validation that does not require additional analyses or reconstructions of the metamodels. Fourteen two-dimensional mathematical problems and an engineering problem are illustrated to show the feasibility of the suggested method.

Circular Path Generation Technique for Ball Bar Measurement by Simultaneous Movement of Two Axes (2 축 동시구동을 통한 볼바 측정용 원호경로 생성 방법)

  • Circular path generation for ball bar measurement using the simultaneous movement of two axes with at least one rotary axis requires the execution of CAM software. However, a change in the machine type or measurement condition requires a new execution of the CAM software, which is cumbersome. This paper presents a circular path generation technique that does not require CAM software and is applicable to different types of driving axes with an arbitrary structural configuration of machine tools and any ball bar setup condition. Mathematical equations are derived for three cases using the proposed technique. In addition, to inspect the measurement feasibility for avoiding physical interference among the ball bar parts, a tilting angle calculation is proposed. The validity of the proposed technique was verified by performing a ball bar experiment with A and C as the simultaneous axes of a five-axis machine tool.

  • Recently, studies to reduce vibration and noise of automobiles have been actively conducted. However, previous studies did not concentrate on the optimization of the mount system with passive or active mounts. This study analytically studies an active mounting system with three active structural paths between source and receiver and the feasibility has been verified. Active mounting system has a coupled structure of piezoelectric stack actuators and passive mounts. A dynamic model of the whole system is prepared and the control force and phase of the stack actuators in each path are determined to target full isolation of each path. Its performance on vibration attenuation is investigated and based on it, optimized combinations of passive and active paths for the best attenuation are presented.

High Transparent, High Mobility MoO3 Intergraded InZnO Films for Use as a Transparent Anode in Organic Solar cells

  • We reported on the electrical, optical, structural and morphological properties fabricated by co-sputtering for use as an anode for organic solar cells (OSCs). By adjusting RF and DC power of $MoO_3$ and IZO targets during co-sputtering, we fabricated the $MoO_3$-IZO electrode with graded content of the $MoO_3$ on the IZO films. At optimized $MoO_3$ thickness of 20 nm, the $MoO_3$ graded IZO electrode showed a higher mobility ($33cm^2/V-Sec$) than directly deposited $MoO_3$ on IZO film ($26cm^2/V-Sec$). At visible range (400nm~800nm), optical transmittance of the $MoO_3$ graded IZO electrode is higher than that of directly deposited $MoO_3$ on IZO film. High mobility of $MoO_3$ graded on IZO is attributed to less interface scattering between $MoO_3$ and IZO. To investigate the feasibility of $MoO_3$ graded IZO films, we fabricated conventional P3HT:PCBM based OSCs with $MoO_3$ graded IZO as a function of MoO3 thickness. The OSC fabricated on the $MoO_3$ graded IZO anode showed a fill factor of 66.53%, a short circuit current of $8.121mA/cm^2$, an open circuit voltage of 0.592 V, and a power conversion efficiency of 3.2% comparable to OSC fabricated on ITO anode and higher than directly deposited $MoO_3$ on IZO film. We suggested possible mechanism to explain the high performance of OSCs with a $MoO_3$ graded IZO.

BIM System Development for Conceptual Design and Pre-Feasibility Study of Cable-Stayed Bridge (BIM 기반 사장교의 개념설계 및 예가분석 시스템 개발)

  • This paper has developed the system for supporting the approximate construction cost and the quantity estimation based on 3D model information in the pre-project planning phase of 3-span continuous cable-bridge with 2-pylons. First of all, we'd analyzed the design information (structural design report, blueprint and quantity) of the existing cable-stayed bridges and derived the design variables of cable-stayed bridges. We developed the BIM wizard that generates a cable-stayed bridge model parametrically based on derived design variables. The principle material quantities of cable-stayed bridge are calculated directly from 3-dimensional bridge model built by using the BIM wizard. Then, we can estimate the construction cost in relation to its quantities and unit cost of cable-stayed bridge. In a result, we have established the system that the construction cost can be estimated more specific than the conventional method (construction estimates per meter or square meter). We hereby will be able to review various alternatives as soon as possible in bidding process.

  • The hydroforming technology has been spreaded dramatically in automotive industry last 10 years. Itmay cause many advantages to automotive applications in terms of better structural integrity of the parts, lower cost from fewer part count, material saving, weight reduction, lower springback, improved strength and durability and design flexibility. In this study, the whole process of rear sub-frame parts development by tube hydroforming using steel material having tensile strength of 440MPa grade is presented. At the part design stage, it requires feasibility study and process design aided by CAE (Computer Aided Design) to confirm hydroformability in details. Effects of parameters such as internal pressure, axial feeding and geometry shape in automotive rear sub-frame by hydroforming process were carefully investigated. Overall possibility of hydroformable sub-frame parts could be examined by cross sectional analyses. Moreover, it is essential to ensure the formability of tube material on every forming step such as pre-bending, preforming and hydroforming. In addition, all the components of prototyping tool are designed and interference with press is examined from the point of geometry and thinning.

Assessment of Incipient Decay of Radiata Pine Wood Using Stress-wave Technique in the Transverse Direction (횡단방향(橫斷方向) 응력파(應力波) 방법(方法)에 의(依)한 라디에타소나무의 초기부후(初期腐朽) 평가(評價))

  • The feasibility of using stress-wave technique in the transverse direction for the assessment of early stages of decay was investigated using compression test specimens having different annual ring orientations subjected to decay by Tyromyces palustris for various time intervals. Decay detection, quantitative assessment of decay, and the prediction of residual strength of decayed wood with less than five percent weight loss can be feasible using stress-wave parameters (wave velocity, wave impedance, and stress-wave elasticity) and their percent reduction due to decay, measured by stress-wave technique in the transverse direction. The use of stress-wave technique in the transverse direction for the application of this technique to structural members in service is desirable, when considering the easiness of attachment of accelerometers of stress-wave measuring device on the surface of members and also accurate detection of localized decayed areas. In stress-wave technique in the transverse direction, stress-wave parameters measured were different according to the angles between wave propagation path and annual ring, due to the anisotropy of wood structure. Therefore, it is recommended to use percent reduction in stress-wave parameters instead of stress-wave parameters. This evaluation method using percent reduction in stress-wave parameters is ideal when it is impossible to observe annual ring orientation on the transverse surface of wood.

Preparation of Electrolytic Tungsten Oxide Thin Films as the Anode in Rechargeable Lithium Battery (리튬 이차전지용 텅스텐 산화물 전해 도금 박막 제조)

  • Tungsten oxide films were prepared by an electrochemical deposition method for use as the anode in rechargeable lithium batteries. Continuous potentiostatic deposition of the film led to numerous cracks of the deposits while pulsed deposition significantly suppressed crack generation and film delamination. In particular, a crack-free dense tungsten oxide film with a thickness of ca. 210 nm was successfully created by pulsed deposition. The thickness of tungsten oxide was linearly proportional to deposition time. Compositional and structural analyses revealed that the as-prepared deposit was amorphous tungsten oxide and the heat treatment transformed it into crystalline triclinic tungsten oxide. Both the as-prepared and heat-treated samples reacted reversibly with lithium as the anode for rechargeable lithium batteries. Typical peaks for the conversion processes of tungsten oxides were observed in cyclic voltammograms, and the reversibility of the heat-treated sample exceeded that of the as-prepared one. Consistently, the cycling stability of the heat-treated sample proved to be much better than that of the as-prepared one in a galvanostatic charge/discharge experiment. These results demonstrate the feasibility of using electrolytic tungsten oxide films as the anode in rechargeable lithium batteries. However, further works are still needed to make a dense film with higher thickness and improved cycling stability for its practical use.
