Two different types of nondestructive evaluation (NDE) techniques were employed to investigate the tensile behavior of ceramic matrix composites (CMCs). Two NDE methods, ultrasonic testing (UT) and infrared (IR) thermography, were used to assess defects and/or damage evolution before and during mechanical testing. Prior to tensile testing, a UTC-scan and a xenon flash method were performed to obtain initial defect information in light of UT C-scans and thermal diffusivity maps, respectively. An IR camera was used for in-situ monitoring of progressive damages. The IR camera measured temperature changes during tensile testing. This paper has presented the feasibility of using NDE techniques to interpret structural performance of CMCs.

In the manufacturing of large scale composite structures, the cost-effective processing and the enhancement of structural performance are critical. One of the most effective ways for this purpose is to use stitched multiaxial warp knitted (MWK) perform in the resin transfer molding process. This study reports the effect of stitching on the mechanical properties of MWK composites, and the feasibility processing of the thick U-beam structure utilizing the stitched preforms. Permeability of the preform, viscosity and cure property of the epoxy resin have been measured. The results of resin flow analysis has been used in determining the gate/vent locations of the RTM mold. Cross-sectional observation of the channel beam prototype demonstrated that the resin impregnation was almost complete, except for some surrounding area of stitched yarns.
Structural integrity of either a passenger car or a light truck is one of the basic requirements for a full vehicle engineering and development program. The results of the vehicle product performance are measured in terms of ride and handling, durability, noise/vibration/harshness (NVH), crashworthiness and occupant safety. The level of performance of a vehicle directly affects the marketability, profitability and, most importantly, the future of the automobile manufacturer In this study, we used the virtual proving ground (VPG) approach for obtaining the dynamic characteristics. The VPG approach uses a nonlinear dynamic finite element code (LS-DYNA3D) which expands the application boundary outside the classic linear static assumptions. The VPG approach also uses realistic boundary conditions of tire/road surface interactions. To verify the predicted dynamic results, a single lane change test has been performed. The prediction results were compared with the experimental results, and the feasibility of the integrated CAE analysis methodology was verified.

Pipe wall thinning is one of severe problems on structural safety in nuclear power plants. A guided wave can be a proper tool for the fast evaluation or monitoring. As for gradual wall thinnings, however, low sensitivity caused by the low reflection coefficient limits the use of the guided wave. In this work, instead of the guided wave reflection at the wall thinning, the variation of dispersion characteristics is concerned. SH waves were employed due to several advantages and the magnetostrictive patch transducers were used for the excitation and sensing of the SH waves. The proposed method were verified with some experiments and showed the feasibility as an effective tool for the inspection of gradual wall thinning.
Exact application of the tensile force is critical to high-tension members in civil engineering structures, and thus actual tensile forces have often been estimated in field. To date, a few methodologies have been presented utilizing static and/or dynamic responses of tension members. Each of these methods has its disadvantages as well as advantages in its procedures, accuracy, and equipment requirements. In this paper, the feasibility of a sensitivity based methodology, based on the relationship between the natural frequencies and the applied tensile force, developed by the authors, is verified using the measured data from a cable-stayed bridge structure. From the results, it is shown that the proposed method can be utilized in estimating the tensile force in tension member of a real structure.
This paper presents a theoretical and experimental investigation of the transmission and sensing characteristics of the biconically tapered cladded multimode fibers. The beam propagation method was used to examine the transmission characteristics with various structural parameters. The results show that the transmission of the biconically tapered cladded multimode fibers is sensitive to the mode of the input optical beam and the refractive index of the external medium. A refractive index sensor for the external medium was proposed based on the theoretical analysis, and its feasibility was demonstrated experimentally.

Recently, piezoelectric materials have attracted considerable attention because of its self-sensing and actuating properties. To model smart structures, numerical modeling of structures with piezoelectric devices is essential. As many factors affect the performance of smart structures, optimization of these parameters is necessary. In this paper, the shape design sensitivity analysis of the 3D piezoelectric and structural elements is developed and shape optimization is performed. For the evaluation of the sensitivity, the finite element method is used. For the shape sensitivity, the domain velocity field is calculated. An acoustic cavity model is presented as a numerical example to study the feasibility of the formulation. The continuum sensitivity is compared with the results of the finite difference method by ANSYS. And the sequential linear programming (SLP) algorithm is used as the optimization algorithm.
This study has been motivated to evaluate the practicality of numerical simulation of impedance monitoring for damage detection in steel column connection. In order to achieve the objective, the following approaches are implemented. Firstly, the theory of electro-mechanical (E/M) impedance responses and impedance-based damage monitoring method are outlined. Secondly, the feasibility of numerical simulation of impedance monitoring is verified for several pre-published experimental examples on steel beams, cracked aluminum beams, and aluminum round plates. Undamaged and damaged steel and aluminum beams are simulated to compare to experimental impedance responses. An aluminum round plate with PZT patch in center is simulated to investigate sensitive range of impedance responses. Finally, numerical simulation of the impedance-based damage monitoring is performed for a steel column connection in which connection bolts are damaged. From the numerical simulation test, the applicability of the impedance-based monitoring to the target steel column connection can be evaluated.
In this study, an FRF-based structural damage identification method (SDIM) is proposed for plate structures. The present SDIM is derived from the partial differential equation of motion of the damaged plate, in which damage is characterized by damage distribution function. Various factors that might affect the accuracy of the damage identification are investigated. They include the number of modal data used in the analysis and the damage-induced modal coupling. In the present SDIM, an efficient iterative damage self-search method is introduced. The iterative damage search method efficiently reduces the size of problem by searching out and then by removing all damage-free zones at each iteration of damage identification analysis. The feasibility of the present SDIM is studied by some numerically simulated tests.

To consider the practicality and economic feasibility of developing reactive powder concrete (RPC), the strength and microstructure properties of RPC using ternary pozzolanic materials (silica fume, blast furnace slag, fly ash) were investigated in this study. Through the investigation, it was found that the compressive strength of RPC using ternary pozzolanic materials was increased significantly compared to that of the original RPC containing silica fume only. A considerable improvement in the flexural strength of RPC using ternary pozzolanic materials was found, and then the utilization of a structural member subjected to bending was expected. The X-ray diffractometer (XRD) analysis and Scanning Electronic Microscope (SEM) revealed that the microstructure of RPC was denser using the ternary pozzolanic materials than the original RPC.
