  • The purpose of this study was to determine whether association exists between temporomandibular joint (TMJ) characteristics in transcranial radiographs and TMJ internal derangement and to evaluate the validity of transcranial radiographs in diagnosis of internal derangement. Transcranial radiographs and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of 113 TMJs from 76 subjects were used for this study and all TMJs were classified into 3 groups according to the results of MRI: normal disk position, disk displacement with reduction, and disk displacement without reduction. Transcranial analysis included linear measurement of joint spaces and condylar head angle measurement. To determine any relationship between transcranial measurements according to disk displacement, one-way ANOVA was used. The results showed that condyle-fossa relationship in standard transcranial radiographs had no relationships with disk displacement. And, as disk displacement progressed, condylar angle between head and neck increased significantly. This result can be interpreted that condylar head angle reflects structural hard tissue change according to internal derangement progress. But this is insufficient in the determination of internal derangement. Therefore, although still clinically helpful, the validity of standard transcranial radiographs to diagnose TMJ internal derangement was questioned.

  • Ceria ($CeO_2$) becomes one of important functional nanomaterials and a key abrasive material for chemical-mechanical planarization (CMP) of advanced integrated circuits in silicon semi-conductor technology. Two synthetic crystalline ceria (RT735, RT835) are studied by the Rietveld structural refinement to determine crystallite size and microstrain. Rietveld indices of RT735 and RT835 indicate good fitting with $R_p(%)=8.50$, 8.34; $R_{wp}(%)=13.4$, 13.5; $R_{exp}(%)=11.3$, 11.5; $R_B(%)=2.21$, 2.36; S(GofF: Goodness of fit)=1.2, 1.2, respectively. $CeO_2$ with space group Fm3m show a=5.41074(2), 5.41130(6) ${\AA}$, V=158.406(1), 158.455(3)${\AA}^3$ in dimension. Detailed Rietveld refinement reveals that crystallite size and microstrain are 37.42(1) nm, 0.0026 (RT735) and 72.80(2) nm, 0.0013 (RT835), respectively. It also shows that crystallite size and microstrain of ceria are inversely proportional to each other.

  • Recently renewable energy such as offshore wind energy takes a higher interest due to the depletion of fossil fuel and the environmental pollution. This paper deals with multi-body dynamics (MBD) analysis technique for offshore wind turbine system considering aerodynamic loads and Thevenin equation used for determination of electric generator torque. Dynamic responses of 5MW offshore wind turbine system are evaluated via the MBD analysis, and the system is the horizontal axis wind turbine (HAWT) which generates electricity from the three blades horizontally installed at upwind direction. The aerodynamic loads acting on the blades are computed by AeroDyn code, which is capable of accommodating a generalized dynamic wake using blade element momentum (BEM) theory. In order that the characteristics of dynamic loads and torques on the main joint parts of offshore wind turbine system are simulated similarly such an actual system, flexible body modeling including the actual structural properties are applied for both blade and tower in the multi-body dynamics model.

  • This paper presents preliminary design and performance analysis of a fast and high precision Tracking Mount for 1m Satellite Laser Ranging(SLR) which is development by Korea Astronomy and Space science Institute(KASI). SLR is considered to be the most accurate technique currently available for the precise orbit determination of Earth satellites. The SLR technique measures the time of flight between pulses emitted from laser transmitter and pulses returned from satellites with laser retro-reflector array. It provides millimeter level precision of range measurements between SLR stations and satellites. A fast and high precision Tracking Mount for SLR which is proposed in this research should be capable of day and nighttime laser tracking about the satellites with laser reflectors from 200 km to 36,000 km altitude(geosynchronous orbit). In order to meet this requirement, we performed mechanical design and structural analysis for Tracking Mount. Also we designed the motion control system and conducted pre-performance analysis to obtain good performance results for a fast and high precision Tracking Mount.

  • A rain water pumping station is a structural countermeasure to inland flooding of domestic water generated in a urban watershed. In this study, the optimal operation water level of the pump with the minimum overflow was determined based on the opinions of the person in charge of the operation of the rain water pump station. A GA (Genetic Algorithm), which is an optimization technique, was used to estimate the optimal operation water level of the rain water pump station and was linked with SWMM (Ver.5.1) DLL, which is a rainfall-runoff model of an urban watershed. Considering the time required to maximize the efficiency of the pump, the optimal operating water level was estimated. As a result, the overall water level decreased at a lower operating water level than the existing water level. For most pumps, the lowest operating water level was selected for the operating range of each pump unit. The operation of the initial pump could reduce the amount of overflow, and there was no change in the overflow reduction, even after changing the operation condition of the pump. Internal water flooding reduction was calculated to be 1%~2%, and the overflow occurring in the downstream area was reduced. The operating point of the pump was judged to be an effective operation from a mechanical and practical point of view. A consideration of the operating conditions of the pump in future, will be helpful for improving the efficiency of the pump and to reducing inland flooding.

  • Residual stress is defined as stress that already exists on a structural member from the effects of welding and plastic deformation before the application of loading. Due to such residual stress, welded H-section compression members under centroidal compression load can undergo buckling and failure for strength values smaller than the predicted buckling load and specified compressive strength. Therefore, this study was carried out to evaluate the effect of residual stress from welding on the determination of the buckling load and specified compressive strength of the H-section compression member according to the column length variation. A three-dimensional nonlinear finite element analysis was performed for the H-section compression member where the welded joint was fillet welded by applying heat inputs of 3.1kJ/mm and 3.6kJ/mm using the SAW welding method.

  • The calcium to phosphate ratio (Ca/P) in biphasic calcium phosphates powders using X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD) was characterized. The BCP powders with various stoichiometric Ca/P molar ratio were synthesized with coprecipitation process and calcination. Compositions of the powders with Ca/P molar ratio between 1.5 and 1.67 were subjected to starting Ca/P molar ratio, pH = 10, and thermal treatment up to $900^{\circ}C$. The structural, morphological and chemical characterizations for BCP powders with stoichiometric Ca/P ratio were carried out with scanning electron microscope (SEM) and inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectroscopy (ICP-AES) and a phase quantification was investigated by XRD. The solubility of HAp, $\beta$-TCP, and BCP powders was tested in the phosphate buffer solution (PBS) at $36.5^{\circ}C$ and pH = 7.4.

  • Purpose: The purpose of the present study was to perform a pattern analysis in patients with temporomandibular disorder (TMD) resulting from unilateral mastication due to chronic periodontitis. Methods: Thirty participants with signs or symptoms of TMD who engaged in unilateral mastication due to periodontitis-related discomfort (test group) were selected. Another 30 subjects exhibiting signs or symptoms of TMD resulting from unilateral mastication not due to chronic periodontitis (control group) were also recruited. An interview-based questionnaire was administered, and an examination of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) with determination of periodontal status was performed. Results: The duration of unilateral mastication was significantly longer in the control group than in the test group. There was a significant negative correlation between the duration of unilateral mastication and the Community Periodontal Index score. Using the Research Diagnostic Criteria for TMD (RDC/TMD) axis I algorithms, all the subjects were assigned to 3 main groups. The test group exhibited significantly a higher diagnostic distribution of group III (arthralgia, osteoarthritis, or osteoarthrosis), and in both the test and control groups, the number of diagnoses was larger for the non-chewing side. The control group showed a significantly higher diagnostic distribution of group I (myofacial pain), and in both the test and control groups, the number of diagnoses was larger for the chewing side. Conclusions: The results of the present study indicate that unilateral mastication due to chronic periodontitis could induce not only pain but also structural TMJ changes if adequate treatment is not administered and supported within a short time from the onset of the condition. Therefore, immediate treatment of chronic periodontitis is recommended to prevent not only the primary progress of periodontal disease, but also secondary TMJ-related problems. Furthermore, subjects who have suffered chronic long-term periodontitis without treatment should be urged to undergo a TMJ examination.

  • The determination of the depth of deteriorated concrete is one of the main problems in the structural assessment of concrete structures that have been subjected to a fire. This information is particularly important in order to optimize the future operations of repair/strengthening, or in decision-making concerning a possible demolition. The purpose of this study is to propose evaluation technique of damaged depth of concrete exposed at high temperature. In order to evaluate damaged depth of core picked at member under fire, the 24 specimens have been made with variables of concrete strength(20 MPa, 40 MPa, 60 MPa) and heating exposure condition in 600 and 800 for 2 hours. Color change analysis and water absorption after heating have been measured and split tensile stress test was performed to ka the residual compressive strength against the depth of specimen. The results show that the deeper of the depth from heating face, water absorption ratio is smaller and residual stress ratio is larger and the color of heated face is changed to red color. Using this technique at damage evaluation of fired structure, We evaluate damaged depth of member under fire and determine the reasonable strengthening range.

  • The failure behavior of reinforced concrete beams is governed by the mechanical relationships between the shear span-to-effective depth ratio, flexural reinforcement ratio, load and support conditions, and material properties. In this study, two simple indeterminate strut-tie models which can reflect all characteristics of the failure behavior of reinforced concrete beams were proposed. The proposed models are effective for the beams with shear span-to-effective depth ratio of less than 3. For each model, a load distribution ratio, defined as the fraction of load transferred by a truss mechanism, is also proposed to help structural designers perform the rational design of the beams by using the strut-tie model approaches of current design codes. In the determination of the load distribution ratios, the effect of the primary design variables including shear span-to-effective depth ratio, flexural reinforcement ratio, and compressive strength of concrete was reflected through numerous material nonlinear analysis of the proposed indeterminate strut-tie models. In the companion paper, the validity of the proposed models and load distribution ratios was examined by applying them to the evaluation of the failure strength of 335 reinforced concrete beams tested to failure by others.
