  • This paper studied the applicable case study on the BIM, based on a structural design process for office buildings. The design process and the applicable system are provided from the results of the research project on the system development of a virtual construction. The case study evaluated the work productivity and economic application of the process and the developed system. The study mainly takes steel structures into account. By using the structural analysis model and the basic design documents, it is able to create the basic construction model and the construction structural model. Likewise, the integrated model is built by IFC from the finished construction structural model. It checked the interoperability of the information among the various BIM design tools. The work environment was efficiently improved by establishing the BIM process, and work productivity could be increased with the help of the modeling automation for connections at the construction design stage.

  • Distributed operation of overall structural design process, by which product and process optimization are implemented, is presented in this paper. The database-interconnected multilevel hybrid method, in which the conventional design method and the optimal design approach are combined, is utilized there. The method selectively takes the accustomed procedure of the conventional method in the conceptional framework of the optimal design. Design conditions are divided into primary and secondary criteria This staged application of design conditions reduces the computational burden for large complex optimization problems. Two kinds of numeric and graphic processes, are simultaneously implemented on the basis of concurrent engineering concepts in the distributed environment of PC networks. Numerical computation on server and graphic works on independent client are communicated through message passing. Numerical design is based on the optimization methodology and the drawing process is carried out by AutoCAD using the AutoLISP programming language. The prototype design experimentation for some steel trusses shows the validity and usability of the method. This study has sufficient adaptability and expandability in methodology, in that it is based on general theory and industry standard systems.

  • The Design Axioms provide a general framework for design methodologies. The axiomatic design framework has been successfully applied to various design tasks. However, the axiomatic design has been rarely utilized in the detailed design process of structures where the optimization technology is generally carried out. The relationship between the axiomatic design and the optimization is investigated and Logical Decomposition method is developed for a systematic structural optimization. The entire optimization process is decomposed to satisfy the Independence Axiom. In the decomposition process, design variables are grouped according to sensitivities. The sensitivities are evaluated by the Analysis of Variance(ANOVA) to avoid considering only local values. The developed method is verified through examples such as the twenty -five members transmission tower and the two -bay-six-story frame.

  • Recently, the structural design code has been changed and every buildings, which have more than three floors or wider area than 1,000m2, should be designed to be able to resist earthquakes. However, most structural engineers are working in some big cities and this physical distance would set a barrier between structural engineers and architects. As a result, most row-rise buildings in small cities are designed and constructed without structural design or the consulting by structural engineers. The purpose of this research is to develop an web-based structural design environment in which structural design and consulting can be performed efficiently through on-line communication without off-line meetings or documents. In addition to the on-line communication, the system has a integrated structural design module which supports all the process of structural design and can increases the productivity of structural design work.

  • The design process of machine tools is regarded as a sequential, discrete, and inefficient works as it requires various kinds of design tools and many working hours. This paper describes an integrated design system embedding a design methodology that can support efficiently and systematically the conceptual structural design of machine tools. The system is a knowledge-based design system and has four machine-tool-specific functional modules including configuration design, configuration analysis, structure design, and structural analysis support module. Through the configuration design and analysis module, a machine configuration appropriate for design requirements is selected, and then the arrangement of ribs fer each structural part is decided in the structure design module. Also, the structural analysis support module is used to evaluate design result by utilizing structural analysis software, ANSYS. The system is applied to design of a tapping machine, and shows that the machine structure can be designed fast and conveniently by processing each design step interactively.

  • Efficiency of design process for large scale structures highly depends on the development of efficient structural analysis and structural response control algorithms because a successful design involves a number of structural analysis based on iterative structural response control process. In this paper, distributed structural analysis model on multiple personal computers connected by ethernet network is presented. To reduce communication cost required in the process of analysis, substructuring techniques are adopted to evenly distribute computational loads on each processor. With its applications on structural analysis of plane frame structures, performance of the proposed computational model are presented in detail.

  • Design of gas concentration process using a fully thermally coupled distillation is conducted with the commercial design software HYSYS. Detailed procedure of the design is explained, and the performance of the process is compared with that of a conventional system A structural design is exercised for the design convenience. The design outcome indicates that the procedure is simple and efficient. The structural information yielded from equilibrium distillation gives an easy formulation of distillation system which is the initial input required from the setup of the distillation system The performance of the new process indicates that an energy saving of 17.6 % is obtained compared with the conventional process while total number of trays maintains at the same.

  • In the view of the importance of material reduction due to the jump in oil and steel prices, an optimized structural system for lifting lugs was developed. Such a system is needed hundreds of thousands of times a year. A direct design process was added to this developed optimized system to increase the design efficiency and provide a way of directly inserting a designer's decisions into the design system process. In order to verify the system efficiency and convenience, several new prototype lug shapes were suggested using the developed system. From these research results, it was found that the slope of the main plate of the lug structure has a tendency to move from about 45 degrees to about 60 degrees and the design weight was reduced from an initial value of about 32kgf to about $15{\sim}19kg_f$ after the redesign. Based on these initial research results, an efficient reduction in steel weight was expected considering the enormous consumption of lug structures per year. Additionally, a more detail structural analysis through local strength evaluations will be performed to verify the efficiency of the optimum structural design for a lug structure.
