We surveyed the coastal structure damage created by typhoon ‘Maemi’, which heavily struck the Korean peninsula on September 12, 2003. The survey revealed that high tides and strong winds induced by the typhoon were the main causes of the coastal damage, especially in the Busan areas. Though some experimental real-time coastal monitoring stations captured the typhoon movements at the critical time, more systematic and complete system should be implemented to save human lives and property from huge typhoon disasters.
High-resolution wind data were acquired from a 100-m high offshore tower during the passage of Typhoon Hagupit in September, 2008. The meteorological tower was equipped with an ultrasonic anemometer and a number of cup anemometers at heights between 10 and 100 m. Wind characteristics of the strong typhoon, such as mean wind speed and wind direction, turbulence intensity, turbulence integral length scale, gust factor and power spectra of wind velocity, vertical profiles of mean wind speed were investigated in detail based on the wind data recorded during the strong typhoon. The measured results revealed that the wind characteristics in different stages during the typhoon varied remarkably. Through comparison with non-typhoon wind measurements, the phenomena of enhanced levels of turbulence intensity, gust factors, turbulence integral length scale and spectral magnitudes in typhoon boundary layer were observed. The monitored data and analysis results are expected to be useful for the wind-resistant design of offshore structures and buildings on seashores in typhoon-prone regions.
The spatial characteristics of typhoon-class strong wind during the non-typhoon period were analyzed using, a cluster analysis of the observational data and of special strong wind advisories and, warnings issued by the Korean Meteorological Administration. On the Korean Peninsula, strong winds during non-typhoon periods showed a wide variety of spatial characteristics. In particular, the cluster analysis showed that strong winds could be classified into six clusters on the Korean Peninsula, and that the spatial distribution, occurrence rate of strong winds, and strong wind speed in each cluster were complex and diverse. In addition, our analysis of the frequency of issuance of special strong wind warnings showed a significant difference in the average frequency of strong wind warnings issued in metropolitan cities, with relatively high numbers of warnings issued in Gyeongsangbuk-do and, Jeollanam-do, and low numbers of warning issued inland and in other metropolitan cities. As a result of the changing trend in warnings issued from 2004 to 2019, Ulsan and Busan can be interpreted as having a relatively high number of warnings; the frequency of strong wind warnings issuances and strong wind occurrences in these cities is increasing rapidly. Based on the results of this study, it is necessary to identify areas with similar strong wind characteristics and consider specific regional standards in terms of disaster prevention.
Upper ocean response to typhoon Ewiniar (0603) and its impact on the following typhoon Bilis (0604) are investigated using observational data and numerical experiments. Data used in this study are obtained from the Ieodo Ocean Research Station (IORS), ARGO, and satellite. Numerical simulations are conducted using 3-dimensional Princeton Ocean Model. Results show that when Ewiniar passes over the western North Pacific, unique oceanic responses are found at two places, One is in East China Sea near Taiwan and another is in the vicinity of IORS. The latter are characterized by a strong sea surface cooling (SSC), $6^{\circ}C$ and $11^{\circ}C$ in simulation and observation, under the condition of typhoon with a fast translation speed (8m $s^{-1}$) and lowering intensity (970 hPa). The record-breaking strong SSC is caused by the Yellow Sea Bottom Cold Water, which produces a strong vertical temperature gradient within a shallow depth of Yellow Sea. The former are also characterized by a strong SSC, $7.5^{\circ}C$ in simulation, with a additional cooling of $4.5^{\circ}C$ after a storm's passage mainly due to enhanced and maintained upwelling process by the resonance coupling of storm translation speed and the gravest mode internal wave phase speed. The numerical simulation reveals that the Ewiniar produced a unfavorable upper-ocean thermal condition, which eventually inhibited the intensification of the following typhoon Bilis. Statistics show that 9% of the typhoons in western North Pacific are influenced by cold wakes produced by a proceeding typhoon. These overall results demonstrate that upper ocean response to a typhoon even after the passage is also important factor to be considered for an accurate intensity prediction of a following typhoon with similar track.

The characteristics of strong wind occurring over the southwestern part of the Korean peninsula are analyzed by using hourly mean wind data observed in Gusan, Mokpo, Yeosu and Wando from 1970 to 2008. The strong wind here is defined as wind speed of more than 13.9 m/s according to Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA)'s strong wind advisory. The causes of strong wind are classified into typhoon, monsoonal (wintertime continent polar air mass) and frontal (cyclone) winds. Typhoon wind is characterized by abrupt change of its speed and direction after and before landfall of typhoon and monsoonal wind by periodicity of wind speed. And frontal wind tend to be changed from southwesterly to northwesterly at observation site with location of frontal surface. Strong winds are mainly occurred in Yeosu by typhoon, Gusan and Mokpo by monsoonal wind, and Mokpo and Yeosu by frontal wind. In particular, in case of frontal wind, the frequency of strong wind in Mokpo decreases while in Yeosu it increases. Monthly frequency of strong wind is high in August in Mokpo and September in Yeosu by typhoon, January in Gusan and December in Mokpo by monsoonal wind, and in April in Mokpo and Yeosu by frontal wind. The duration less than 1 hour of strong wind is prominent in all stations.
The present study analyzes the characteristics of 43 typhoons that affected the Korean Peninsula between 2002 and 2015. The analysis was based on 3-second gust measurements, which is the maximum wind speed relevant for typhoon disaster prevention, using a typhoon disaster prevention model. And the distribution and characteristics of the 3-second gusts of four typhoons, RUSA, MAEMI, KOMPASU, and BOLAVEN that caused great damage, were also analyzed. The analysis show that between May and October during which typhoons affected the Korean Peninsula, the month with the highest frequency was August(13 times), followed by July and September with 12 occurrences each. Furthermore, the 3-second gust was strongest at 21.2 m/s in September, followed by 19.6 m/s in August. These results show that the Korean Peninsula was most frequently affected by typhoons in August and September, and the 3-second gusts were also the strongest during these two months. Typhoons MAEMI and KOMPASU showed distribution of strong 3-second gusts in the right area of the typhoon path, whereas typhoons RUSA and BOLAVEN showed strong 3-second gusts over the entire Korean Peninsula. Moreover, 3-second gusts amount of the ratio of 0.7 % in case of RUSA, 0.8 % at MAEMI, 3.3 % at KOMPASU, and 21.8 % at BOLAVEN showed as "very strong", based on the typhoon intensity classification criteria of the Korea Meteorological Administration. Based on the results of this study, a database was built with the frequencies of the monthly typhoons and 3-second gust data for all typhoons that affected the Korean Peninsula, which could be used as the basic data for developing a typhoon disaster prevention system.
This study aimed to classify typhoons using a more objective index based on strong winds and precipitation data from 1904 to 2019 obtained from the Automated Surface Observing System. The Typhoon Type Index (TTI) was calculated by classifying wind speed and precipitation of each typhoon, thereby revealing the rate and characteristics of the wind-type and rain-type typhoons. In addition, the top 10 typhoons for property damage were analyzed by dividing them into three types according to the typhoon course. The analysis showed that typhoons of type 1, heading north to the west coast, were most clearly affected by the wind. In addition, the impact of the wind was reduced and the impact of rain increased in the order of typhoon type 2 that landed on the southern coast and type 6 that affected the Korean Peninsula through China.
This study was conducted to investigate the sudden rise of fine particle concentration after the passage of typhoon USAGI and NARI in Busan. Nocturnal inversion layer was formed at atmospheric boundary layer and wind direction changed from southerly wind to northeasterly wind after USAGI passed through Busan. Fine particle concentration in Busan rapidly increased by subsidence of air pollutants released from sources and dust transported from in the vicinity of industrial regions. Wind direction changed from northeasterly wind to southeasterly wind, wind velocity increased and lower atmosphere became extremely unstable after NARI passed through Busan. $PM_{10}$ concentration of Busan increased sharply because of surface dust dispersed by strong wind. Fine particle concentration generally decreases by precipitation and wind after typhoon passes through. However, the concentration can also go up not only by subsidence and transportation in nocturnal inversion layer but also by surface dust which temporarily occurs by strong wind.
The strong turbulence characteristic of typhoon not only will significantly change flow field characteristics surrounding the large-scale wind turbine and aerodynamic force distribution on surface, but also may cause morphological evolution of coast dune and thereby form sand storms. A 5MW horizontal-axis wind turbine in a wind power plant of southeastern coastal areas in China was chosen to investigate the distribution law of additional loads caused by wind-sand coupling movement of coast dune at landing of strong typhoons. Firstly, a mesoscale Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) mode was introduced in for high spatial resolution simulation of typhoon "Megi". Wind speed profile on the boundary layer of typhoon was gained through fitting based on nonlinear least squares and then it was integrated into the user-defined function (UDF) as an entry condition of small-scaled CFD numerical simulation. On this basis, a synchronous iterative modeling of wind field and sand particle combination was carried out by using a continuous phase and discrete phase. Influencing laws of typhoon and normal wind on moving characteristics of sand particles, equivalent pressure distribution mode of structural surface and characteristics of lift resistance coefficient were compared. Results demonstrated that: Compared with normal wind, mesoscale typhoon intensifies the 3D aerodynamic distribution mode on structural surface of wind turbine significantly. Different from wind loads, sand loads mainly impact on 30° ranges at two sides of the lower windward region on the tower. The ratio between sand loads and wind load reaches 3.937% and the maximum sand pressure coefficient is 0.09. The coupling impact effect of strong typhoon and large sand particles is more significant, in which the resistance coefficient of tower is increased by 9.80% to the maximum extent. The maximum resistance coefficient in typhoon field is 13.79% higher than that in the normal wind field.
