The purpose of this study was to examine the efficacy of Euphorbiae Kansui Radix(Gan-sui) for a patient who has suffered from severe paralytic ileus as post-symptoms caused by 3rd stroke. The subject was a 70-year-old woman who had been troubled with dyspepsia, abdominal flatus and other pains during the past 10 years, and whose symtoms worsened because of her recent 3rd stroke. At the time of admission, she complained of abdominal flatus, conspitation, quadri weakness(Lt>Rt) and dysathria. For the first 10 days after admission, she was treated with Oriental' Western Medicine, which failed to relieve any symptom. However, after taking Euphorbiae Kansui Radix(Gan-sui), gastro-intestinal vermicular movement improved, so the symptoms of abdominal flatus and conspitation disappeared. As a consequence, the accompanying paralytic ileus condition also improved.

  • Lung abscess is often ocuured by aspiration of infectious secretion in stroke patients that has symptom of dysphagia. So we studied the effects of combined eastern and western treatment in lung abscess patient combined with stroke. We performed both antibiotic therapy and herbal medication in a lung abscess patient. We compared a chest x-ray film of early stage of disease with a film of after stage of disease, also compared change of symptom-cough, sputum, flank pain, blood phlem. After dispending antibiotic therapy and herbal medication, a lung abscess patient improved symptoms and in result of chest x-ray. The above results suggest that combined eastern and western trearment can have good effects on improving symptoms of a lung abscess patient.

  • A patient with central post-stroke pain was treated for 4 weeks with scalp acupuncture and traditional Korean medicine (following a cerebral infarction in 2013). The patient presented at Chungju hospital in January 2019 with left side weakness and tingling, numbness in the left hemisphere, chronic pain and dysarthria. Initially, herbal medicine, acupuncture, pharmacupunture, indirect moxibustion, and physiotherapy were administered together with Western medicine, with no improvement in the patient's condition. On Day 5, scalp electroacupuncture (MS1, MS5, MS10, MS11) was introduced. The numbness feeling in the patient's head resolved, and the pain in his upper body decreased. Grip force difference between the left and right hand improved from 3 kg to 0-0.5 kg. Sleep disturbance was resolved after 4 weeks treatment, and his average numeric rating scale score for pain improved from an admission score of 10, to a discharge score of 5. The patient could walk unaided after treatment.

  • Background: The purpose of this study is comparison of the results between regression and multi-level analysis to find out factors influencing outcome indicators (in-hospital death, length of stay, and medical charges) of stroke patients. Methods: By using patient sample data of Health Insurance Review & Assessment Service, patients admitted with stroke were selected as survey target and 15,864 patients and 762 hospitals were surveyed. Results: For the results of existing regression analysis and multi-level analysis, models were assessed through model suitability index value and as a result, the value of results of multi-level analysis decreased compared to the results of regression, showing it is a better model. Conclusion: Factors influencing in-hospital death of stroke patients were analyzed and as a result, intra-class correlation (ICC) was 13.6%. In factors influencing length of stay, ICC was 11.4%, and medical charges, ICC was 17.7%. It was found that factors influencing the outcome indicators of stroke patients may vary in every hospital. This study could carry out more accurate analysis than existing research findings through analysis of reflecting structure at patient level and hospital level factors and analysis on random effect.

  • Objective : Western sleeping pills work very fast and effectively against insomnia. But they also bring about many side effects. Therefore oriental medicine can be a good alternative remedy. There are many clinical reports about patients treated for insomnia after stroke using oriental medicine. However, there are no clinical report about patients treated for insomnia after stroke diagnosed by Gobub & Bokjin. We want to prove the effect of Gobub & Bokjin in diagnosis and treatment for the insomnia patients after stroke. Methods : We chosed a patient who had suffered from insomnia after stroke. We administered acupuncture treatment, as well as Herbal medicine(Bokryoungum and Sanjoinsan). We monitored total sleep time per a day for 23 days. Results & Conclusion : Bokryoungum and Sanjoinsan was effective in improving overall sleep time day.

  • The aims of this study are to conduct meta-analysis for obtaining pooled estimates of the utility weight for stroke and to explore the study design characteristics that determine the utility weight for stroke. Medline (Pubmed), CEA Registry (Tufts Medical Center), and KERIS (Korea Education & Research Information Service) were searched to find out the literature that reported quality of life with stroke. Patient characteristics, utility weights and standard errors were extracted and stratified by severity, study method, respondent and country. All estimates were measured on a 0 to 1 scale with 0 representing the death and 1 representing the perfect health. The pooled estimates of the utility weight were 0.627 for total stroke, 0.756 for mild stroke, 0.631 for moderate stroke, and 0.389 for severe stroke (p=0.0001). Non-patients showed significantly lower utility weights than patients for severe (p=0.0122) stroke.

  • This study was designed and undertaken to identify the related factors of family caregivers' depression & quality of life with stroke elderly patient. The data was collected from August 16th to September 5th. 1999. The subjects in this study were 70 caregivers and 70 patients with stroke who were hospitalized in 2 oriental medicine hospitals and 3 hospitals located in Junla-buk do. The data was analized using percentage. means. t-test. ANOVA and pearson's correlation coefficients, step-wise multiple regression done with the SAS program. The results of this study are as follows; 1. The score for family caregivers' depression was 45.2 when total score was 80. The family caregivers who got more than 50 scores belongs to highly depression group amount to $29\%$. 2. The score for family caregivers' quality of life was 37.04 when total score was 56. 3. In the significant relationship between family caregivers' depression and general characteristics of the family caregivers ; age. sex, income. In the significant relationship between family caregivers' quality of life and general characteristics of family caregivers: age, education, income. In the significant relationship between family caregivers' depression and quality of life and general characteristics of stroke elderly patient ; sex. 4. The depression degree showed significant differences in the variables of family caregiver's physical health(r=-0.307, p=0.011), stress(r=0.463. p=0.011). social support (r=-0.241. p=0.046) and elderly stroke patient's ADL(r=-0.313, p=0.009). The quality of life degree showed significant differences in the variables of family caregivers' depression(r=-0.564, p=0.001), stress(r=-0.322, p=0.008), social support (r=0.353. p=0.003). 5. The most important variable affecting family caregiver's depression was caregivers' physical symptom which accounted for $32.0\%$ of the total variance in which multiple regression analysis. Total variance affecting the family caregivers' depression was $49\%$. The most important variable affecting family caregivers' quality of life was caregivers' depression which accounted for $48\%$ of the total variance in which multiple regression analysis. Total variance affecting the family caregivers' quality of life was $61\%$.
