This paper investigates the effect of thermal oxidation on the profile of the residual stress along the depth of p+ silicon films by quantitative determination method. Two examples for the application of this method illustrate that most of p+ region is subjected to the tensile stress except the region near the front surface and that the stress gradient of the film oxidized at $1100^{\circ}C$ is more steep than that of the film oxidized at $1000^{\circ}C$.
One of the major benefits of the pre-stressed concrete pavements is the omission of tension in concrete that results in a reduction of cracks in the concrete slabs. Therefore, the life of the pavement is increased as the thickness of the slabs is reduced. One of the most important issues in dealing with the prestressed concrete pavement is determination of the magnitude of the pre-stress. Three dimensional finite element analyses are conducted in this research to study the pre-stress under various load (Boeing 777) and thermal gradient combinations. The model was also analyzed under temperature gradients without the presence of traffic loading and the induced stresses were compared with those from theoretical relationships. It was seen that the theoretical relationships result in conservative values for the stress.
It is known in some literatures that the B value is not equal to unity in saturated soil when effective stress is given, in which the B Value is the ratio of measured excess pore water pressure and isometric loading pressure. In this study the B value was measured on various effective stresses and on various incremental loading stresses in various grain size of specimens with saturated sand. The test results showed that the B value was affected largely by grain size of sand in specimen and the amount of effective stress. There was the semi-logarithmic relationship between B value and effective stress, and also there was the linear relationship between the gradient of the former semi-logarithmic relationship and grain size of specimen.

In lieu of the excellent radio frequency (RF) performance of microelectromechanical system ( MEMS) switches, these micro switches need higher actuation voltage for their operation. This requirement is secondary to concerns over the swtiches’ reliability. This paper reports high reliability operation of RF MEMS switches with low voltage requirements. The proposed switch is optimised to perform in the Q-band, which results in actuation voltage of just 16.4 V. The mechanical stress gradient in the thin micro membrane is computed by simulating von Mises stress in a multi-physics environment that results in 90.4 MPa stress. The computed spring constant for the membrane is 3.02 N/m. The switch results in excellent RF performance with simulated isolation of above 38 dB, insertion loss of less than 0.35 dB and return loss of above 30 dB in the Q-band.
In this study, we calculated the redistribution of vacancy concentration in metal specimens induced by stress-induced diffusion at a high temperature. To deduce the governing equation, we associated the unit volume change equation of strains with a differential equation of vacancy concentration as a function of stress using the stress-strain relationship. In this governing equation, we considered stress as the only chemical potential parameter to stay in the scope of this study, which provided the vacancy concentration equation as of stress gradient in metals. The equation was then mathematically delineated to derive a analytical solution for a transient, one-dimensional diffusion case. With the help of Korhonen's approximation and the boundary conditions, we successfully deduced a general solution from the governing equation. To visualize the feasibility of our solutions, we applied the solution to two different stress-induced cases - a rod with fixed concentrated stresses at both ends and a rod with varying concentrated stresses at both ends. Although it is necessary to legitimatized the model in the future for improvement, our results showed that the model can be used to interpret the location of structural defects, the formation of vacancy, and furthermore the high temperature behavior of metals.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of sample thickness and support structure on the residual stress of Hastelloy X superalloy samples fabricated by laser powder bed fusion (LPBF), which is an additive manufacturing process. The residual stresses of LPBF samples with different thicknesses and support structures were measured using X-ray diffraction. The results revealed that as the thickness of sample increased from 2.5 mm to 20 mm, its tensile residual stress gradually decreased from 443.5 MPa to 182.2 MPa. Additionally, the residual stress in the bottom region of sample was higher than that in the top region, and the residual stress difference in the bottom and top regions became more pronounced as the sample thickness decreased. The residual stress of LPBF sample also varied depending on the structure of support. The residual stress of sample decreased with increasing contract area between the sample and the support, because the larger contract area led to smaller temperature gradient throughout the sample.
The aim of this study is to apply shape optimization technique for the repair of aging airframe components, which may extend fatigue life substantially. Free-form optimum shapes of a cracked part to be reworked or replaced are investigated with the objective to minimize the peak local stress concentration or fatigue-damage. Iterative non-gradient method, which is based on an analogy with biological growth, is employed by incorporating the robust optimization method to take account of the stochastic nature of the loading conditions. Numerical examples of optimal hole shape in a flat plate are presented to validate the proposed method. The method is then applied to determine the reworked or replacement shape for the repair of a cracked rib in the rear assembly wing body of aircraft.

This paper presents turbulent characteristics of an impinging F-O-O-F type injector in which fuel ad oxidizer impinge on each other to atomize under the different momentum ratio. Water was used as an inert simulant liquid instead of fuel and oxidizer. The droplet size and velocity in the impinging spray flow field were measured using a PDPA. The gradient of the spray half-width(b$_2$) along the long-axis direction declined throughout the entire spray flow field with increasing the momentum ratio from 1.19 to 6.48. However, the gradient of the half-width(b$_1$) along the short-axis direction decreased with increasing the momentum ratio. The turbulence intensity and turbulent kinetic energy were converged into the center of the center of the initial region with increasing the momentum ratio. As the momentum ratio increased from MR=1.19 to MR=6.48, the turbulent shear stress decreased. The results of this study can be used for the design of an impinging type injector for liquid rackets.
In this article, the static behavior of non-prismatic sandwich beams composed of functionally graded (FG) materials is investigated for the first time. Two types of beams in which the variation of elastic modulus follows a power-law form are studied. The principle of minimum total potential energy is applied along with the Ritz method to derive and solve the governing equations. Considering conventional boundary conditions, Chebyshev polynomials of the first kind are used as auxiliary shape functions. The formulation is developed within the framework of well-known Timoshenko and Reddy beam theories (TBT, RBT). Since the beams are simultaneously tapered and functionally graded, bending and shear stress pushover curves are presented to get a profound insight into the variation of stresses along the beam. The proposed formulations and solution scheme are verified through benchmark problems. In this context, excellent agreement is observed. Numerical results are included considering beams with various cross sectional types to inspect the effects of taper ratio and gradient index on deflections and stresses. It is observed that the boundary conditions, taper ratio, gradient index value and core to the thickness ratio significantly influence the stress and deflection responses.
