  • A deterministic stress-based methodology has traditionally been applied in pipeline design. Meanwhile, reliability based design and assessment (RBDA) methodology has been extensively applied in offshore or nuclear structures. Lately, the release of ISO standard on reliability based limit state methods for pipelines ISO16708 indicates that the RBDA methodology is one of the newest directions of natural gas pipeline design method. This paper presents a case study of the RBDA procedure for predicting the time-dependent failure probability of pipelines with corrosion defects, where separable Monte Carlo (SMC) method is applied in the reliability estimation for corroded pipeline instead of traditional, crude Monte Carlo(CMC) Method. The result shows the SMC method take advantage of improving accuracy in reliability calculation.

  • This paper describes that the resonant tank type DC-DC converter consist of reactor and capacitor resonant tank circuit for increased the output current. This circuit configuration is composed of the resonant tank circuit used resonant capacitor and reactor and the capacitor connected in switch are a common using by resonance capacitor and ZVS(Zero Voltage Switching) capacitor. Therefore, the proposed converter can reduce a switching losses, noise, and voltage stress at turn-on and turn-on and has an advantage which is able to operating safely in load short, because DC reactor is connected with resonance reactor in order to supply a fixed current with low ripple from DC power supply. The analysis of proposed circuit uses normalized parameters and characteristic estimation is generally described the proposed circuit with the characteristics of power and output voltage etc. Also, design is based on the characteristic estmations in each step. Hence, We conform a rightfulness theoretical analysis by comparing a theoretical values and experimental values obtained from experiment.

  • Introduction of wave model, considered the effect of tide, wind and wave induced currents at the coastal waters of complex bathymetry, is a very important factor for most coastal engineering design and disaster protection problems. As the steady state spectral wave model could simulate depth induced wave shoaling and refraction, current induced refraction effect, steepness induced wave breaking, diffraction, wind wave growth, and wave-wave interaction that redistribute energy, this would support and compensate the gap in the real field of design where other wave models could not deal and cause wrong estimation. In this study, for that sense, we applied the spectral wave model t the large coastal waters near Gaduck Island where the Busan new port construction project is going on, for better understanding and analysis of wave transformation process. We also compared the simulation results with the calculated from the existing model. From such a trial of this study, we hope that broader and sager use of the spectral model in the area of port design and disaster prevention system come through in near future.

  • Ionospheric scintillation induces a rapid change in the amplitude and phase of radio wave signals. This is due to irregularities of electron density in the F-region of the ionosphere. It reduces the accuracy of both pseudorange and carrier phase measurements in GPS/satellite based Augmentation system (SBAS) receivers, and can cause loss of lock on the satellite signal. Scintillation is not as strong at mid-latitude regions such that positioning is not affected as much. Severe effects of scintillation occur mainly in a band approximately 20 degrees on either side of the magnetic equator and sometimes in the polar and auroral regions. Most scintillation occurs for a few hours after sunset during the peak years of the solar cycle. This paper focuses on estimation of the effects of ionospheric scintillation on GPS and SBAS signals using a software receiver. Software receivers have the advantage of flexibility over conventional receivers in examining performance. PC based receivers are especially effective in studying errors such as multipath and ionospheric scintillation. This is because it is possible to analyze IF signal data stored in host PC by the various processing algorithms. A L1 C/A software GPS receiver was developed consisting of a RF front-end module and a signal processing program on the PC. The RF front-end module consists of a down converter and a general purpose device for acquiring data. The signal processing program written in MATLAB implements signal acquisition, tracking, and pseudorange measurements. The receiver achieves standalone positioning with accuracy between 5 and 10 meters in 2drms. Typical phase locked loop (PLL) designs of GPS/SBAS receivers enable them to handle moderate amounts of scintillation. So the effects of ionospheric scintillation was estimated on the performance of GPS L1 C/A and SBAS receivers in terms of degradation of PLL accuracy considering the effect of various noise sources such as thermal noise jitter, ionospheric phase jitter and dynamic stress error.

  • Deformational characteristics of subgrade soils are very important input parameters for pavement design. It is necessary to make an amount of effort to estimate experimentally the modulus of subgrade soils. In case of designing simple (or lower level) pavement section, the estimation of the modulus based on experiments must cause an excessive cost. It has proposed various empirical correlation models to estimate the modulus from basic properties of the materials or more simple alternative tests. Seven subgrade soils in Korea were tested in this study. It was founded that the deformational characteristics of subgrade soils in Korea has a close relation to strength characteristics, the empirical correlation model was proposed. There was a close relation between cohesion value and modulus at low confining stress ($r^2=0.93$). By comparing with the measured modulus and the modulus determined by proposed correlation model from strength characteristics, the value of the coefficient of determination ($r^2$) is 0.75.

  • The oceanic tides have an effect on groundwater levels in coastal fractured rock aquifers. The observed groundwater table fluctuations caused by the effective stress through an aquifer are shown as sine curves similar with tidal fluctuation. To estimate a hydrogeologic parameter, tidal method is utilized with groundwater level fluctuations of two monitoring wells. Cross correlation function is used to calculate time lags between observed groundwater levels and tide, and the deeper well shows longer time lag. The storage coefficients calculated by using tidal efficiency and time lag show large differences. The storage coefficients obtained by using time lags are close to the result of slug test, and that of the deeper well shows closer value by slug test. The tidal efficiency is unsatisfied to apply in the tidal method because of an effect of phreatic aquifer and the vertical flow of groundwater through fractured confining bed. This tidal method can be an economical and effective way to define the parameter by considering the location of observation well and hydrogeologic characteristics of a coastal aquifer.

  • In this study, we performed experimental tests on five SP-100 aluminum powder epoxy specimens with several after-curing conditions in order to estimate their hardness with temperature and compressive strength. In the surface hardness test, it was found that the higher the after-curing temperature, the higher was the hardness. In particular, it was found that the hardness of the specimens in cases 3 and 4 was much higher than in the other cases. In addition, in the compression tests carried out to evaluate the compressive strength, it was found that the specimens showed relatively similar stiffness and strength with after-curing, and specimens with no after-curing showed compression stress-strain curves similar to those of thermoplastic resins.

  • In recent years, tunnel construction is being increased in order to resolve traffic congestion around urban area, however there are a lot of difficulties due to restrictions such as interference with existing alignment, adjacent structures and cost increase of land acquisition as well as public complaints for negative environmental impacts near the expected tunnel construction site. Therefore, applications of close parallel tunnel have been increasing greatly. But close parallel tunnels cannot guarantee the stability compared with normal parallel tunnel which has enough distance between tunnels. So various methods to strengthen the pillar have been introduced recently, however there is few methods which consider the pillar behaviour in the state of compression. In this paper, the reinforcement methods which reflect the behavior of pillar were reviewed with comparision and analysis by numerical method.

  • Greenhouses have been damaged due to the uplift pressure from strong wind, for which rebar piles are often installed near the greenhouse to resist the pressure. For the effective design of rebar piles, it is necessary to access the shear strength of soil on which the greenhouse is constructed. This study experimentally evaluates the shear strength of the soil beneath the greenhouse. Four soil samples were collected from four agricultural sites, and prepared for testing with 75, 80, 85, and 90% compaction rates. One-dimensional unconfined compression test (UC), consolidated-undrained triaxial test (CU), and resonant column test (RC) were performed for the evaluation of shear strength and shear modulus. Generally, the higher shear strength and modulus were observed with the higher compaction rates. In particular, the UC shear strength increases with the increase of #200 sieve passing rate. Resulting from the CU test, the sample with the most of coarse soil had the highest friction angle, but the variation is small among samples. Resulting from the CU and RC tests, the ratio of maximum shear modulus with the major principle stress at failure was the higher at the finer soil. The ratio was two to three times greater than the ratio from the standard sand. This indicates that the shear strength is lower for the fine soil than the coarse soil at the same shear modulus. The results of this study will be a useful resource for the estimation of the pull-out strength of the rebar pile against the uplift pressure.
