  • Pozzolan is to improve the strength and the durability of concrete as a result of the pozzolanic reaction, Broadly speaking, pozzolanic materials can be artificial materials, such as slica fume and fly ash, and natural material, such as rice husk ash, clay, volcanic ash, clayish pozzolan. Hwangtoh is a mineral which belongs to a group of matakaolin, especially halloysite, and the main elements is SiO$_2$, Al$_2$O$_3$, Fe$_2$O$_3$. The purpose of this study is to examine the application of Hwangtoh for the concrete admixtures, the composition of this study is shown as follows. Chapter I is analysis for properties of concrete as the kinds of admixture, and Chapter H is analysis for properties of concrete as the replacement ratio of activated Hwangtoh. As a result of this study, Hwangtoh is found to have high practical use as pozzolanic material, and the pertinent range of replacement ratios of Hwangtoh on cement are 10∼20 %.

  • As a eco-friendly material, Hwangtoh (red clay) has been studied for complete or partial replacement of portland cement. Most of existing studies focused on the material properties of the Hwangtoh concrete including the compressive strength, drying shringkage, and creep. In the present study, the shear strength of the beams made with the Hwangtoh concrete was tested. Further, bond strength of tension re-bars embedded in the Hwangtoh concrete was tested. One of the concrete tested consisted of activated Hwangtoh replacing 20% of the cement. The other consisted 100% activated. Hwangtoh replacing all the cement. The beam specimens were tested under two point static loading. The test result showed that the shear strength of activated Hwangtoh concrete beams replacing 20% and 100% of cement was equivalent to that of the ordinary portland cement concrete beam. However, the bond strength of activated Hwangtoh concrete replacing 100% of the cement was less than that of the ordinary portland cement concrete.

  • The purpose of this study was to analyze mechanical properties through an experiment of concrete that reinforced PET fiber, blast furnace slag and Hwangtoh. As admixture that is substitute material of cement for environmental concrete development In order to measure compressive strength, the experiment has executed to concrete, Hwangtoh concrete and a mixture specimen of Hwangtoh and PET reinforcement fiber. Also, creep and drying shrinkage experiment have executed to analyze long-term quality of specimens. Test results, compressive strength by age was not much of difference as a substitute, however, compressive strength of HTC specimen was the strongest of the three specimens. In the case of creep and drying shrinkage, long-term quality of HTC specimen was distinguished.

Most of existing studies focused on the mechanical properties of the Hwangtoh concrete including the compressive strength, drying shrinkage, creep. In the present study, the flexural capacity of the beams made with the Hwangtoh concrete was tested. One of the concrete tested consisted of activated Hwangtoh replacing 20% of the cement. The other consisted 100% activated Hwangtoh replacing all the cement. The simple beams were tested under two point static loading. The flexural strength, cracking moment, deflection, and ductility were compared with those of the beams made with ordinary portland cement concrete.

  • The purpose of this study is to examine the effect of variations in the mix rate of PVA fiber and the replacement ratio of non-sintering Hwangtoh on non-sintering Hwangtoh mortar and concrete mixed with PVA fiber. For water to binder ratio, mortar and concrete were both 50%, and PVA fiber mix rate was 0% and 0.3%. The replacement ratio of non-sintering Hwangtoh was 0, 25, 50 and 75(%) for mortar, and 0, 15, 30 and 50(%) for concrete. The properties of the mortar and concrete were compared and analyzed in 4 different levels, and the results can be summarized as follows. The replacement ratio of 30% of the non-sintering Hwangtoh, and the PVA fiber mix rate of 0.3% is determined to result in concrete of high quality, including strength and fluidity, and crack control by plastic shrinkage.

  • Recently, the public interest in eco-friendly material and structure has been increasing and many Hwang-toh researches are being actively performed. Hwang-toh is one of the traditional environment friendly construction materials used as a construction and plastering material. Hwang-toh has many advantages as construction material due to its high heat storage capacity, auto-purification, antibiotic ability, and infrared ray emission characteristics. But, currently it has not been developed into construction material and used in modern construction due to its low strength and dry shrinkage cracking prone characteristics. According to the recent researches and study results, Hwang-toh can be used as a natural pozzolanic material like fly-ash or pozzolan. In this study, mechanical properties and structural flexure behavior experiments of slag, recycled PET fiber, and Hwang-toh added concrete are carried out. The test results showed that drying shrinkage of concrete mixed with Hwang-toh has lower compressive strength and elastic modulus than those of control cement concrete specimen, but it has the similar flexural behavior in reinforced concrete beams.

  • In this study, the mechanical properties of concrete mixed with non-sintered hwangto(NHT) as an alternate material for cement were evaluated, and the compressive strength prediction equation of concrete based on ultrasonic pulse velocity analysis was proposed. Cement replacement rates for mixed NHT were set to 0, 15, and 30%, and design compressive strength was set to 30 and 45MPa to evaluate the effect on the amount of cement and NHT powder. The mechanical properties items analyzed were compressive strength, ultrasonic pulse velocity, and elastic modulus, and were measured on days 1, 3, 7, and 28. As the replacement rate of NHT increased, the mechanical properties tended to decrease. In addition, as a result of analyzing the correlation between compressive strength and ultrasonic pulse velocity, the correlation coefficient(R2) showed a high relationship(R2=0.95) on concrete mixed with NHT.

  • In this study, ultrasonic pulse velocity was analyzed to evaluate the high-temperature mechanical properties of concrete mixed with non-sintered hwangto. The W/B of the specimens was set at 0.41, the percentage of non-sintered hwangto admixture was set at two levels of 15,30%. The target temperature of the specimen is set to 6 levels of 20, 100, 200, 300, 500, 700 ℃, and the heating rate is set to 1℃/min. The result showed that the amount of non-sintered hwangto incorporated into the concrete tends to results in lower compressive strength. Ultrasonic pulse velocity showed similar trends, but differed in some areas.

  • This study evaluated the effects of fibers on the mechanical properties and chemical solution resistance of porous concrete with fiber type (jute, pulp, PVA and nylon fiber) and fiber volume fraction (0.0%, 0.1%, 0.2%, 0.3%). The tests that were carried out to analysis the properties of porous concrete included compressive strength, void ratio, pH value, and chemical solution exposure with varying type and volume fraction of fiber were conducted. The type and volume fraction of fiber also affected the void ratio, compressive strength, flexural strength and chemical solution exposure. Increased volume fractions of fiber resulted in improved properties of the compressive strength, flexural strength and void ratio. However, the difference between the measured pH value and chemical resistance of porous concrete with fiber type and volume fraction was not significant.
