  • This paper proposes a method for predicting maximum friction coefficients and optimal slip ratios as optimal control parameters for traction control or slip control of autonomous mobile robots on rough terrain. This paper focuses on strength of ground surface which indicates different characteristics depending on material types on surface. Strength of various material types can be estimated by Willoughby sinkage model and by a developed testbed which can measure forces, velocities, and displacements generated by wheel-terrain interaction. Estimated strength is collaborated on building improved Brixius model with friction-slip data from experiments with the testbed over sand and grass material. Improved Brixius model covers widespread material types in outdoor environments on predicting friction-slip characteristics depending on strength of ground surface. Thus, a prediction model for obtaining optimal control parameters is derived by partial differentiation of the improved Brixius model with respect to slip. This prediction model can be applied to autonomous mobile robots and finally gives secure maneuverability on rough terrain. Proposed method is verified by various experiments under similar conditions with the ones for real outdoor robots.

  • Behavior of RC beam-column joint is very complex as the composite material behaves differently in elastic and inelastic range. The approaches generally used for predicting joint shear strength are either based on theoretical, strut-and-tie or empirical methods. These approaches are incapable of predicting the accurate response of the joint for entire range of loading. In the present study a new generalized RC beam-column joint shear strength model based on hybrid approach i.e. combined strut-and-tie and empirical approach has been proposed. The contribution of governing parameters affecting the joint shear strength under compression has been derived from compressive strut approach whereas; the governing parameters active under tension has been extracted from empirical approach. The proposed model is applicable for various conditions such as, joints reinforced either with or without shear reinforcement, joints with wide beam or wide column, joints with transverse beams and slab, joints reinforced with X-bars, different anchorage of beam bar, and column subjected to various axial loading conditions. The joint shear strength prediction of the proposed model has been compared with 435 experimental results and with eleven popular models from literature. In comparison to other eleven models the prediction of the proposed model is found closest to the experimental results. Moreover, from statistical analysis of the results, the proposed model has the least coefficient of variation. The proposed model is simple in application and can be effectively used by designers.

  • Shear failure in reinforced concrete (RC) structures is very hazardous. This failure is rarely predicted and may occur without any prior signs. Accurate shear strength prediction of the RC members is challenging, and traditional methods have difficulty solving it. This study develops a JAYA-GBRT model based on the JAYA algorithm and the gradient boosting regression tree (GBRT) to predict the shear strength of RC slender beams without stirrups. Firstly, 484 tests are carefully collected and divided into training and test sets. Then, the hyperparameters of the GBRT model are determined using the JAYA algorithm and 10-fold cross-validation. The performance of the JAYA-GBRT model is compared with five well-known empirical models. The comparative results show that the JAYA-GBRT model (R2 = 0.982, RMSE = 9.466 kN, MAE = 6.299 kN, µ = 1.018, and Cov = 0.116) outperforms the other models. Moreover, the predictions of the JAYA-GBRT model are globally and locally explained using the Shapley Additive exPlanation (SHAP) method. The effective depth is determined as the most crucial parameter influencing the shear strength through the SHAP method. Finally, a Graphic User Interface (GUI) tool and a web application (WA) are developed to apply the JAYA-GBRT model for rapidly predicting the shear strength of RC slender beams without stirrups.

  • The design strength of panel zones, which was based on Krawinkler model, was investigated by comparing it with existing test and FEM results. The design strength overestimates of the strength of panel zones with thick column flange while it matches well with the strength of panel zones with thin column flange. More extensive studies are needed to develop a mathematical model which can properly define the inelastic behavior of panel zones with various column flange thicknesses and to determine a more rational design strength.

  • In this paper, a model for the evaluation of shear strength of fibre reinforced polymer (FRP)-reinforced concrete beams is given. The survey of literature indicates that the FRP reinforced beams tested with shear span to depth ratio less than or equal to 1.0 is limited. In this study, eight concrete beams reinforced with GFRP rebars without stirrups are cast and tested over shear span to depth ratio of 0.5 and 1.75. The concrete compressive strength is varied from 40.6 to 65.3 MPa. The longitudinal reinforcement ratio is varied from 1.16 to 1.75. The experimental shear strength and load-deflection response of the beams are determined and reported in this paper. A model is proposed for the prediction of shear strength of beams reinforced with FRP bars. The proposed model accounts for compressive strength of concrete, modulus of FRP rebar, longitudinal reinforcement ratio, shear span to depth ratio and size effect of beams. The shear strength of FRP reinforced concrete beams predicted using the proposed model is found to be in better agreement with the corresponding test data when compared with the shear strength predicted using the eleven models published in the literature. Design example of FRP reinforced concrete beam is also given in the appendix.

  • The failure probability of wheel beyond 10$\^$7/ cycles is achieved by the strengths-stress interference model for the evaluation of fatigue strength and reliability in the wheel, From plane bending fatigue test results, the fatigue life (N$\_$f/) for the smooth and 200㎛ holed specimens can be represented as $\sigma$$\_$a/ = 1326N$\_$f/$\^$-0.10/ and $\sigma$$\_$a/ = 2894N$\_$f/$\^$-0.18/. Respectively, fatigue strength of the wheel at beyond 10$\^$7/cycles was about 332 MPa. And, the fatigue strength for the specimen with a micro hole (d=200㎛) which simulated an inclusion on the wheel surface was about 235 MPa. Thus, a micro hole (d=200㎛) caused about 30% reduction of fatigue strength of the specimen. The failure probabilities for the smooth and micro-holed specimens, derived from the strength-stress interference model, are 0.0148% and 13.05%, respectively. The current finding suggests that at least 200 ㎛ sized inclusion, which might be produced during manufacturing process, will cause a critical effect on integrity of the railway vehicle.

  • In this study, a multi-layer perceptron neural network (MLPNN) prediction model for compressive strength of the cement mortars has been developed. For purpose of constructing this model, 8 different mixes with 240 specimens of the 2, 7, 28, 56 and 90 days compressive strength experimental results of cement mortars containing fly ash (FA), silica fume (SF) and FA+SF used in training and testing for MLPNN system was gathered from the standard cement tests. The data used in the MLPNN model are arranged in a format of four input parameters that cover the FA, SF, FA+SF and age of samples and an output parameter which is compressive strength of cement mortars. In the model, the training and testing results have shown that MLPNN system has strong potential as a feasible tool for predicting 2, 7, 28, 56 and 90 days compressive strength of cement mortars.

  • Utilization of upgraded fine fly ash in cement-based materials has been proved by many researchers as an effective method to improve compressive strength of cement based materials at early ages. The addition of fine fly ash has introduced dilution effect, enhanced pozzolanic reaction effect, nucleation effect and physical filling effect into cement-fly ash system. In this study, an integrated reaction model is adpoted to quantify the contributions from cement hydration and pozzolanic reaction to compressive strength. A modified model related to the physical filling effect is utilized to calculate the compressive strength increment considering the gradual dissolution of fly ash particles. Via combination of these two parts, a numerical model has been proposed to predict the compressive strength development of fine fly ash mortar considering fly ash fineness. The reliability of the model is validated through good agreement with the experimental results from previous articles.

  • In the concept of two-parameter fatigue failure criterion, the material fatigue failure is determined by the damage degree and the current stress level. Based on this viewpoint, a residual strength degradation model for stud shear connectors under fatigue loads is proposed in this study. First, existing residual strength degradation models and test data are summarized. Next, three series of 11 push-out specimen tests according to the standard push-out test method in Eurocode-4 are performed: the static strength test, the fatigue endurance test and the residual strength test. By introducing the "two-parameter fatigue failure criterion," a residual strength calculation model after cyclic loading is derived, considering the nonlinear fatigue damage and the current stress condition. The parameters are achieved by fitting the data from this study and some literature data. Finally, through verification using several literature reports, the results show that the model can better describe the strength degradation law of stud connectors.
